Misc GOTM question?

I really didn't know where to post this so I just started a new thread.
Anyway, I don't see it specified in the rules which external programs are allowed in GOTM. Is civlackey's civ Assistants combat calculator allowed or do we have to do the math in our head?

Also, what programs are out there to take screenshots? I would like to submit one with my QSC if anyone can help. Thanks.

drewshark,

for external programs, pretty much any program that you do not load the civ3 save game file into or that does not have the ability to write into the .sav file would be considered legal. So calculators and other external programs would be fair game in almost every case.

there are currently two utilities that would be considered legal for in game use that load the save file: Mapstat (for domination tracking) and Apollo(cutural victory projections). Mapstat should not really be used until after you get full knowledge of the world if you want to be a purest but we will clarify that as the rules pages get updated in the coming weeks.

For the screenshots issues you should find detailed answers in the main civ3 FAQ that you can access from the General Discussion forum. You should have part of this built-in to virtually any windows based pc or mac plus you can download a number of extra evaluation software packages for major image software companies like Jasc.

If you are trying to take a screenshot of your 1000bc save, remember that we can often do that for you after the file is submitted and that avoids image filesize, format and scale issues. A couple of players have included readme files along with their qsc submissions to indicate any images or other things they might like to pull into the timeline as it is assembled.

Good luck in your game,

cracker

For screenshots I use Ctrl-Print Screen. That puts the screen in the clipboars. Then I open Paint Shop Pro and paste it. Then I crop it and click convert to JPG. I've heard you can use Paint if you dont' have PSP or another program like that. This is on Windows.

When you right-click on a stack of units to show the box that tells you what units are in the stack, you can't use Ctrl-PrtScrn because then the 'box' dissappears.

Is there a way to take a screenshot that includes that box?

Follow up on external programs idea. Is there any program we can use along with GOTM which will reveal the coordinates of a particular tile?

I was thinking it might be helpful for reference in talking about the GOTM later if players could refer to an event that took place in year XXX and began at tile XXXX.

If there is not a utility available, it might be helpful for future GOTM if players could toggle grid on/off.

Glad to have you hanging about Planetfall. Hope your playing this month's game because it ought to be right up your alley.

A agree with you that a toggle that displays the square coordinates might be a greate feature of Firaxis had built that into the game.

Many people do not know that the internal coordinate system in Civ3 is truly "orthogonal" in the way the tiles are labeled. The squares are diamond shaped and considered in rows and columns where there points/vertices meet. The diamonds in Column 32 touch points with the diamond in columns 30 and 34. The diamonds in columns 31 and 33 fill in the spaces. The rows are similarly numbers from top to bottom.

Doesn't PTW show the coordinate in the terrain info box when you right click on a tile?

Thanks DaveMcW. I feel like such an idiot. It's those little things that always pass me by...........

Tfall, unfortunately that's a negative. I just checked on the latest version of PTW. I seem to recall Civ2 having that feature. Wonder why they scrapped that along with some other great features from Civ2.

It's ironic that that someone should mention the idea of playing a GOTM game in PTW due to a feature, though. Just this morning I made a note to myself to say how much better the GOTM would play in PTW because you can rename every unit. By numbering units it would make write-ups much easier to follow when specifice units are mentioned. E.g: work4 building mine NW Moscow. Horse6 killed so and so.

Of course there are several other reason why I'm a little unhappy going BACK from PTW to 1.29. Can't upgrade swordsman. Can't use a slave to immedietely build a no maintanence airfield. 'J' doesn't work as well. Maybe there could be two GOTMs. On 1.29 and on PTW. Ok, I'm done whining. Back to conquering the world!

Check my timeline for QSC 15 when it will be posted. The Russian cartographers developed a coordinates system with the origins in the center of the World. The timeline also includes unwanted but unavoidable famous cartographic errors.

Such utility could help QSC for instance tremendously.

Interesting, from Civ III I didn't think it was possible. This GOTM is civ 3 and not PTW but will definitely check in next PTW game.

Noted 2 minor problems with this GOTM.

Yes, Planetfall, there really is no excuse for you posting spoiler info here. This just spoils the fun of other players. -cracker

Planetfall,

These questions belong to the spoiler thread when you qualify to read it. The main page suggests that things are a little different this time. Not that you do any damage but just to know. I also took a screenshot of an amazing thing which later proved to be yet another easter egg of the game.

I see GOTM, but where is the info re Qsc15:

-- rules and differences between Qsc and GOTM

I see cracker has posted a submission form which leads me to believe there is a Qsc15 but on the main page only the link to GOTM is active, the Qsc is listed with a submission date but no Qsc data.

Qsc15 is the same game as Gotm15.

The only difference is that during the early game play up to 1000bc you have to be a bit more patient and keep a timeline that lets you focus on the details of the game.

You can access the results of the last two Qsc games:

Qsc14

and

Qsc13

plus you can review the Qsc game concept and rules at:
