Missing out on free GP

This is my first post on this site. I looked around, but could not find the answer to my question anywhere. This question is in regard to the technologies that give away free great persons(music, economics, physics, etc.). A few times I have noticed being the first civ to research these techs, but not getting the free GP. The first time it happend, was in my capital which had not chance at producing a great artist. It ended up that my GP meter happend at the same time as me researching music(1st civ to do so). I thought I would be blessed with two GP's in the same turn, but only got the one great artist. From then on I wanted to make sure these circumstances did not repeat themselves. Just recently I was the first to research economics, but no GP showed up at all. Two turns ago, I had a great scientist, and I thought I could use him up and have a merchant soon after, but he never came. I immediately talked to all the civs, to make sure they didnt get economics first, and none had it. Does anybody know why this would happen? Is there some kind of rule where you cannot get GP too close together? If anybody has an idea, let me know and thank you for your patience with a semi-newbie.

I don't know, what patch are you using? 1.61?

Are you certain that none of the others had economics already? If you have the save from just before completing economics, use that save to talk to all the others, instead of immediately after researching it yourself. Waiting until after you research it means that it wouldn't show in the trade screen, because you have that tech also. Most likely someone beat you to it.

Edit: Fixed my awful grammar. I shouldn't try to edit sentences on the fly -- always causes odd sentences.

I haven't seen that in any of my games.

One thing to watch would be the description of the tech, on the turn before you get it. The message "First to discover this wins Prize" only appears while the prize is available. I'd double check that you are still seeing that message on the turn that completes the research.

I am almost positive that I have been the first to research the technology. After I finished I went and talked to the Civs and I could trade economics or one of the prereqs to all of the civs which means they don't have it. I wish I had the save, but it is long gone. I will wait and see if it happens again. Thanks for everybody trying to help.

One way to check is to look at the description of the tech, if it has already been discovered, then the ("first to dicover"... "founds religion/gets a GP/gets a free tech" line isn't there)

This just happened to me today. I researched Economics first and no Great Merchant appeared. I had met all civs, and none of them were anywhere near the Economics tech. What I did get was a Great Engineer, so I think maybe we need to check the GP meter before discovering free GP tech. Seems that if a GP is due on the same turn as your free GP from tech, you don't get the free GP.

Does "free GP" just fill the closest GP meter to full? That wouldn't make sense, but it seems like that is what is happening here.

It's supposed to add a unit to the Capital without changing the GP meter (based on the source provided in the SDK).

I tried a worldbuilder experiment, discovering Economics on the same turn that a GP popped there, and both units appeared; the problem may be something more involved.

Then it seems someone else discovered the techs first if no GP spawned.

yesterday (real life time) i discovered (game time) physics first and i had a GS due on the same turn
Both appeared. One in the capital, one in the GP farm.
I burned both to discover electricity...

my 2 cents

If someone has a missing GP, then we really need the save file so we can reproduce it. When this happens, please grab the autosave from the turn before and post it here!
