MLDR005 NOW what?

preturn: so we lost all the previous landing. I have no idea what to do.

I switch Krasnoyarsk to airport from bombers. We need some vet bombers.

Some cities are starving due to happiness problems. Shift MP to fix those. I find we have a stack of infantry fortified somewhere which can be used as MP and fire specialists. We can't afford such mistakes. Remember to check happiness when you shift units around too. Communism can have 4 MPs!

I switch off artillery and start full on boats.

I think we need to get hold on the Greek island, and then we can airlift our units there and get across the strait much easier.

I move all our boats to the other side of the continent.

Our bombers sink 3 boats.

(1)1610AD: I move our bombers to Time to Dye so we could bomb Sumerians on the Greek island.

(2)1615AD: Immediately steal Mass Production.

Draft one MP. Find one town stuck at settler with size 2!

IBT we get landing of 6 tanks with 4 Mech Infantry.

(3)1620AD: Sumeria has marines so I shift infantry to coastal towns.

I bombard all MIs down to 1hp but tanks show up. We have totally 5 cossacks that I can use. I have no choice but to load 4 cossacks into one army and attack. It kills 4 tanks and redlines. Our sword army then kills 2 1hp MIs without a scratch! Another sword army kills 2 1hp MIs with a loss of 5hp. How about archer army? It kills 1hp tank with 1hp loss and has to go back for MP purpose. With no other things to use, I try AC and it kills the last tank.

IBT careful as I am, still one riot.

(4)1625AD: We lose 4 boats to Sumeria, and win one battle. There are 4 boats not able to reach us.

(5)1630AD: I immediately steal Motorized Transportation and get Ecology as free tech - the least that I'm interested. :(

Greece has become OCC on our island.

I gift Greece into MA and it gets Rocketry. We fortunately can trade one for one.

We can now build tanks and TOW. And we are one tech into Modern Armors. I set one scientist to Synthetic Fibers.

Sumeria doesn't have Ecology and is up only Computers.

M5-1630AD.jpg

I sink 3 boats with the cost of one frigate.

Tanks are ordered when it can be completed as fast as infantry, otherwise we stick with infantry. I do not start TOW as I don't like them. :)

IBT Kursk is bombarded and we lose factory and infantry, so it riots. Sumeria gets Fission and starts UN and Manhattan. I hate nukes.

1635AD: sink one battleship with artillery support.

I start some mobile SAM.

IBT Time to Dyes is bombarded and we lose granary. Sumeria destroys Greece. Sumeria completes SETI.

1640AD: thanks to the transport in Yekaterinburg we can reinforce the island instantly. Our cossack army kills one MI.

IBT two other towns get bombarded. Lose an exposed destroyer.

1645AD: I fail to steal from Sumeria and lose the spy. So much for getting MIs during my turns.

Elite cossack kills 1hp MI and we capture Ephesus. We lose one bomber to fighter.

IBT we lose factory in T'ver.

1650AD: kill 2 landing tanks.

It's 1:1 modern war now. I really hope we can stop Sumeria before we get nuked.

Our military is shaping up well. We need more planes, boats, tanks and infantry.

Most our boats are in Farawayfromportugal. Our bombers are also there. We need to get some jet fighters to Time to Dye, Rostov and other coastal towns. They can protect our towns and we can use recon to bombard the Sumerian boats hidden in the fog. The most important thing is to control the strait so we can land.

But we have to act very fast. Last turn Sumeria has 73099 culture points. It is 711cpt, which means Sumeria will get a culture victory in 37 turns. This means we probably have to invade the main continent directly? I don't think the Greek island is enough for domination.

I will be gone this weekend and might not be able to give this the time it deserves. If Someone wants to Swap, I can give it full attention on Monday.

[old man]
Back in the day I used to play these new-fangled things called "Board Games". There was this one I used to enjoy called Axis and Allies. I also wore an onion on my belt, because it was the fashion at the time...
Anyway, I was playing the Allies this fine day, and the Germans were beating down on Moscow like nobody's business. As some of y'all may recall, the turn order is USSR-Germany-UK-Japan-USA. Well, anyway, it was a spanish onion, and that got me thinking...
USSR goes, and basically buys what it can and prays. The Germans attack on their turn, and Moscow holds on...barely. So UK is up. And I say "F it" (at the time, it was normal to use letters instead of words when speaking).
So I invaded Berlin with the Brits. Didn't bother with Western Europe. Didn't even worry that all of Scandanavia and Eastern Europe was gray. Just went straight for the heart.
And took it.
The troops 'round Moscow whipped their heads back, like Sauron and the Nazgul after Frodo puts on the ring in Mount Doom.
...
Now Berlin didn't last in British hands long ... the Germans retook it once they were up again. But they never threatened Moscow again.
And seven turns later, the Russians were in Berlin themselves.
...
Gentlemen: Our course is clear. We must strike at the heart of Sumeria. There has to be a weak spot--there always is. If we disrupt the cultural juggernaut that is Sumeria, we can win this.

@ChrTh, um wow. I need to borrow some of your writing skills or something. Either that or you need to write all your turnlogs in some storytelling fashion. I tried that a while ago and really sucked at it. We need some of that type of talking today.
@all is it bad if I use my Alt-tab function a ton this opening day of March Madness, but use it for CFC rather than basketball scores?

@romeo: thanks, but I don't use my storytelling abilities while posting because I fear it'll distract from all the messes I make which other players need to clean up for me :)

And why can't you use Alt-Tab for both? :groucho:

NP, can you take this one and get us another foothold?

I'll take it. I don't know about the foothold.... ;)

Am I right to think that we don't ship-chain in this series?

ChrTh, great account of the old days. :D

Ship chaining is a no-no but we have flight so you should be able to move most of the stuff without a problem.

What I do now will commit us for the rest of the game, so I'll invite comment on a couple of points.

1. Obviously we face a severe time constraint. Landing on the former Greek island and then working our way northwest to the Sumerian core looks as though it would be awfully slow, although it is true that in this era progress against an enemy can become very quick, almost regardless of geography, once the military tipping point is reached. OTOH, a landing next to Hyangsan, directly on the Sumerian continent, would put us in position to start taking the big Sumerian culture cities right away, and would reduce the chances of our losing by a few turns to a 100K win. The seven turns or so required to get our transports to Novosibirsk for the trip to Hyangsan wouldn't really be lost, since we still have very few attack units and we need to build up our army some more. So, on balance I favour the Hyangsan gamble; but what do the rest of you think?

2. Should we mobilize our economy for war? The only argument I can see against it is that then we'd never be able to rebuild factories destroyed by Sumerian bombardment.

3. Can we assume that the Sumerians, having ignored Sanitation for so long, will ignore it for the rest of the game? If we can, a direct lunge at the Sumerian core becomes more attractive.

I am not sure it would be quick, as armies will get bombarded, but I don't think we have any other choice. We need a lot of mobile SAMs.

2. Should we mobilize our economy for war? The only argument I can see against it is that then we'd never be able to rebuild factories destroyed by Sumerian bombardment.

Definitely. During my turns we lost some factories in some non-core costal cities, but it's communism and I don't consider that important. Think about it this way: even if we lose it it's no worse than before the mobolization, and rebuilding factories would be too slow anyway.

3. Can we assume that the Sumerians, having ignored Sanitation for so long, will ignore it for the rest of the game?

Yes.

I agree that we should go for the core

[EDIT] Also, remember that every other NPW game ended in conquest, I don't think we have had to take a humiliating domination win yet!

1650 (0): OK, the Hyangsan plan it is.

I mobilize our economy for war.

Three mech inf, two tanks, and a marine land near Pskov.

1655 (1): We bombard and destroy the Sumerian stack of six near Pskov (6-0).

We bombard a destroyer, then sink it with a battleship (7-0).

Our battleship defeats the attack of a destroyer (8-0).

1660 (2): We wipe out a stack of three frigates, a transport, and whatever was in the transport (12-0).

The Sumerians land five mech inf and seven tanks on their favourite spot next to Pskov, and another two MI and four tanks on the northern island.

1665 (3): We destroy the stack of twelve near Pskov for the loss of one tank (24-1).

We sink a destroyer (25-1).

A destroyer sinks one of our battleships, and bombers destroy another in port (25-3).

Two Sumerian tanks die attacking Ephesus on the northern island, which is now held by a TOW army (27-3). The Sumerians then reinforce their army around Ephesus, which grows to four tanks and four MI.

1670 (4): We sink two frigates, a galleon, and the contents of the galleon (30-3).

We sink a battleship (31-3).

We fail to plant a spy in Sumeria. That's a real setback.

Four tanks die attacking the TOW army in Ephesus (35-3).

We lose a bomber (35-4). It's getting harder and harder to hide our air and naval units where they won't take a pounding from bombers.

1675 (5): We destroy four MI outside Ephesus, losing two tanks but gaining the GL Stalin, who forms an army (39-6).

We shoot down two bombers (41-6).

1680 (6): We sink a nuclear submarine (42-6).

The Sumerians land three MI and three tanks in the usual spot near Pskov.

The Sumerians are building the Internet.

1685 (7): We sink two nuclear submarines and a destroyer, losing a bomber (45-7).

We bombard and destroy the stack of six near Pskov (51-7).

We lose a battleship to Sumerian bombers (51-8).

This time four MI, a tank, and a marine land near Pskov.

1690 (8): We bombard and destroy the latest stack of six (57-8).

Our invasion fleet, twelve fully loaded transports with a substantial escort, sails for Hyangsan, destroying a nuclear submarine and a destroyer on the way (59-8).

Our armada defends itself very well, shooting down four bombers and repelling the attack of a destroyer (64-8).

Elsewhere we lose a Cossack to bombers (64-9).

1695 (9): We land five armies and 47 other units next to Hyangsan.

Another attempt to plant a spy fails.

Our stack next to Hyangsan isn't attacked at all.
