MMA - Fighting Styles

Fifty - Isn't MMA the video you showed me a couple weeks ago (in chatroom)? That was pretty cool. I've never seen UFC though.

I can't remember exactly what I posted, but yes it was probably MMA.

EDIT - I just watched the one with the Giant Silva and Minowa... that sommersault thing he pulled was pretty awesome!

 yeah. That sort of thing wouldn't work against someone who wasn't a big hulk like Giant Silva though. Anybody with take down defense would sprawl too quick for that to be effective.

Since we're on the subject of really cool moves, you guys MUST check this out: FLYING SUBMISSIONS HIGHLIGHT. Most of these are flying armbars, but there are also some nice flying triangle chokes.

@Raisen: YES!!!!!!!! :lol:

does capoiera suck?

I trained a little capoeira in Sao Paulo. It's an artform really. It's a dance, you have to learn to play music (berimbau and percussion), you learn the chants etc... It's an awesome artform, but not to compare with Jiu-Jitsu or anything like that. It's not fighting, it's a dance. My capoeira instructor had a vicious kick though, that could break someone's neck if they didn't protect themselves.

It has very unorthdox moves though. Very strange that way. Capoeira is definitely part of Brazilian culture. I've seen a few Gracie videos and they had the berimbau playing the whole time in the background. Awesome artform, but ineffective fighting style against someone who's competent in any manner.

jonatas has it spot on! Nothing wrong with those sorts of martial arts as long as you realize that they are an artform/exercise rather than a fighting style.

@jonatas: watch the flying submission highlight one post above!!!!!!

Ok, Ima check it out right after this post. Btw, the Wanderlei Silva highlights are pretty cool too. There is one shot where his opponent is halfway out of the ring, just his legs and butt are inside. Wanderlei still manages to kick him in the face though, even though outside the ring!! That's just wild.

Just watched it for the first time. Awesome moves :goodjob: Nothing like forcing your opponent to submit while you're hanging upside off his neck by your legs. That's like my favourite move to see. Maybe the only thing as spectacular is a suplex ;) We should do suplex nights next, huh Fifty?

Who says you can't combine a submission hold and a suplex into one awesomely unique move?

I give you the Guillotine Suplex. With commentary by the legendary Bas Rutten! :D

PS: Can you tell that I spend ~2hrs a day reading about and watching MMA?

That was friggin' crazy :dubious: I never really seen anything like that before. That's got to be pretty rare, like once a lifetime when the planets align sort of thing

And don't worry about spending all the time. It's addictive, I know, but keep educatin' us. This is officially the best CFC thread

Amen to that! This is an awesomely entertaining and educational thread. ;)

Well it's time I move away momentarily from the heavyweights to present a couple awesome welterweight and lightweight guys!

First, the capoiera talk made me think of this guy. Easily the most strange fighter in the business. He is unbelievably theatrical, always coming up with a crazy new entrance theme (like coming out with a jetpack-like thing on and a Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket on his head). He is the only fighter I've ever seen to use an entertaining rhythmic movement in his fighting. Don't mistake his strange style for inneffectiveness though, as he's one of the deadliest submission wrestlers on the planet: Genki Sudo highlight.

Here we have a short clip of Genki Sudo versus Butterbean. It is very short but very funny. He basically just jumps on Butterbean, letting the fat man fall with him, then the rest is history

You guys may be wondering who is the most naturally talented fighter in the business? My vote is for BJ Penn. The scope of this guy's talent is unbelievable. He is the first non-Brazilian to win the world BJJ championships, and after only doing the sport for four years. That is absolutely insane. It is UNHEARD OF for a brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner to get a black belt in as little as four years, and he became WORLD CHAMP in that amount of time. He recently lost a decision to Georges St. Pierre, but if the UFC would get their heads out of their arses, they would have made the fight 5 rounds instead of 3, and BJ Penn would DEFINITELY of won if it had gone 5 rounds. I fully expect to see him as welterweight champion within a year. It will go like this:

Matt Hughes vs. Royce Gracie (Matt Hughes wins and retains his title)
Georges St Pierre vs. Matt Hughes (GSP wins and becomes champ)
BJ Penn vs. some throwaway contestant for a title shot (BJ wins)
BJ Penn vs. Georges St. Pierre (BJ Penn wins and becomes champ)

That Genki Sudo guy is unorthodox for sure :P He actually does a capoeira position and a kick too in the first part of the video. It doesn't surprise me, because capoeira is visually fantastic. Lots of gymnastics ie. somersaults, flips, cartwheels in the middle of the dance.

I have heard of BJ Penn too and what he did (which was crazy). I'm definitely interested in following his progress. How do you think Royce Gracie will do Fifty?

As much as I wish he would win (I hate Matt Hughes, and Royce is the founding father of much of MMA), I don't see his pure brazilian jiu-jitsu style beating a modern MMA fighter like Hughes. Hughes is better in standup, takedowns, wrestling, conditioning, strength, and clinchfighting. Royce only has submission ability. I'm holding out hope that Royce can pull off a miracle submission, but I think it's pretty unlikely (maybe a miracle armbar or triangle choke, there is no way he will get Hughes' back for a choke or get mount or side control for a keylock or Kimura)

Back to TUF3 for a second....Tito is looking like a freaking genius and Shamrock looks totally lost. Tito calling the headkick in the last fight was classic. He said it was there, it was there, and goodnight.

Cardio man, he has been stressing it and it's paying off in huge ways.
