[MOD] Fall from Heaven II

Think of HN units as units belonging to no country. (I know it's obvious to gather who's HN unit it is most of the time(Think of Svartalfar pictured HN units attacking you), this is the roleplay of it ;)) So they attack (and don't attack) as they please. Sadly your vassal state isn't an exception.
As I said, this is just a "pet peeve" of mine... I know the reasons why the privateers attack -- I just don't think that your vassal's should (i.e. would require a game change).

So, actually, if they declared war on you and if you took several of their cities but didn't raze any, you won't get any diplomacy hits.
Again, this was really a question so far as game design. I've experienced all the rest, but it sure seems that -- no matter who declared the war (and typically it IS the computer) -- there should be some "hard feelings" about losing cities. If, for example, France declared war on France and Germany wound up taking Paris, you don't think that the French would bear some animosities towards the Germans about Paris after the war was finished?

This is most probably NOT the right thread to be posting this, but I'm so used to coming here that I'll do it anyway... One of you fine people out there will likely tell me where to go to post it correctly OR tell me to call a computer repairman.

Last night, after finishing one game, I wanted to just start another with Amelanchier of the Ljosolfar whom, even after all the games that I've played, I had never tried. Sometimes when starting a game I'm not always pleased with the location of the settlers and their surrounding territory. Subsequently I start again (going back to "Single", "Custom" and entering my parameters). In this case I couldn't seem to get a decent location for Amelanchier (I don't think the computer likes him). Well... After restarting about six or seven times, I got the feared "blue screen of death" (filled with computer gobbly-. .. .. .. .) and the only thing I could do was turn the computer off.

When I finally got back into the game, I discovered that it had lost my "default" parameters (typically it saves the last "name", "land", etc. to provide for it) and was giving my computer "name", default map, "standard" size, etc. Well, I changed all that and started the game.

Finally I found that I had a decent location. However, when I started moving all my units were EXTREMELY slow and the land scrolled at an exceptionally slow pace -- making the game virtually unplayable.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what might have happened and what I can do to correct it? Alternatively, can you tell me the thread on which this should be posted? Or, lastly, do you think that I need to take my computer to be fixed?

Thanks.

Addendum Question: Does FfH use "Flash9.ocx" at all? This file appeared to be missing from my computer.

Thanks again.

Positive. NOT that I ever would, but how would I get multiple Chalids? I thought he was a "world" hero of which only one could be trained...

You could have cheated.

You could have used world builder, but then they wouldn't have religions.

You could also have altered CIV4UnitClassInfos.xml byt changing his unitclass defines <iMaxGlobalInstances> tag to something other than 1 (-1 would remove the limit altogether, 2 would let you have 2, ect).

One of my pet peeves in FfH is the freakin' privateers of my freakin' vassals!!! I don't know how many times I've been attacked passing through my vassals' territory by them. Just as a question: If a civ is your vassal, shouldn't their privateers leave you alone -- especially when it is fairly obvious that they are coming from their cities?

Also, as a side question, when you start building your armies and start sending them to another civ's borders, is the AI smart enough to realize that it probably doesn't bode well for their near future and begin building up their forces?

One last one... Shouldn't a civ hold a grudge against you after you take several of their cities? Many, many times I've gone to war with a civ, taken several of their cities, and immediately after getting peace they are "friendly" with me. I don't know about anyone else, but I would be pretty p*ssed!!!

Thanks as always for listening.

I don't think that the privateers are related to FfH, they are used all the time in CiV IV BtS. If you have a vassal but bad relations, expect privateeers up the wazoo, whether we have fantasy or not! I'm pretty sure that with Blake's changes to the AI, it knows when you mass armies on the border.

Best wishes,

Breunor

I'm not trying to be pushy, but there has to be SOMEONE out there that either can tell me where to properly place this post or has some suggestion on what might have happened to my computer. I'm TRYING to play a game, but I'm lucky to get one turn a minute and I'm only a little past turn 200. Normally my screen and turns, at tihs point in game, virtually fly. I've tried running Norton WinDoctor and the only thing it really found was that the aforementioned "Flash9.ocx" wasn't present.

I'm begging for some suggestions... If I don't get this fixed I might actually resort to doing some work around my house.

Addendum: I've run Norton SystemWorks against my CPU, memory, and graphics and it tells me that everything is just hunky-dory... BUT, given the speed of the game, it is pretty obvious that something pretty severe has happened.

Addedum #2: Well, I guess that I'm really hosed now... Despite the fact that turns were taking well over a minute and the screen was inching (actually, partial inching) I stuck with it because I'm basically a FfH addict. I kept exiting the game, going to the desktop, and going back in with the hope that it might speed up the game just a little. Well... The last time I tried this, I received another "Blue screen of death". After that, the game wouldn't start whatsoever. When I go to task manager I can see Civ4 running in the background doing SOMETHING, but the game never comes up (I've tried it three times, waiting 20-30 minutes each time and the last time a full hour to no avail).

Does anyone know if reinstalling the game would help?

Thanks again to ANYONE who can help me -- either with advice or telling me WHERE to post this to get help.

it would help if you could post the text in the blue screen.
the correct forum for this kind of problem would be here or here or basically any hardware related forum in the www.

Determining the exact cause is very difficult without the complete error msg, and possibly even running a debugger tool.

However..
Civ IV sucks at memory management and all the restarts may have flooded your memory (reason for 1st bsod) and caused corruption of one or more of the game dlls(reason for persistant bsods). If reinstalling Civ doesn't work then there are a few memory/performance tweaks found in the CivilizationIV.ini you could try that may help fixing the problem.

Of course, this is all speculative as the info you've provided is quite limited. I'm also assuming you've tried rebooting once or twice?

I'm not quite sure how I could jot down all the information on the blue screen.. I'll try to find all the disks for Civ 4 and re-install. I assume that I need both the original game and the BTS disks?

Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the links!!! So far as posting on the "www", this problem appears to be primarily oriented towards Civ 4 and I'm not sure how much someone not knowledgeable with the game could help...

I have reinstalled BTS and the 3.13 patch. When I start the game it still goes out into "Never-Never" land (running in the background, but never going anywhere). Apparently the original Civ 4 game has been misplaced and the only other copy I have is at my workplace (don't tell anyone!!!). However, before I go to the bother of also reinstalling Civ 4, does anyone believe that this will help me?

There is a possibility to have the Blue Screen stay you can turn it on somewhere in the properties of the workplace, plz google for it.

Do you play any other game than CIV4? For me it looks like you either have a defect grafic card or some other hardware is defect or your windows installation is corrupted.

OK... It is REALLY localized to BTS. Like an idiot I hadn't tried any other Civ 4 games like Warlords or the standard. I just grabbed my old Warlords disk, stuck it in, and it runs like a champ (with high graphics!!!!). So, apparently, this problem is focused pretty primarily on the BTS version.

Thats a good sign, hopefully you arent dealing with a computer issue. That would be nasty. I would definily recommend uninstalling Civ4 entirely and reinstalling from scratch, something is definitly broke.

Kael, a question: If Warlords runs like a champ, doesn't that pretty much mean that the base game is OK and that reinstalling wouldn't do much good?

Since this problem persists even though I reboot, is there something that "hangs around" belonging to BTS that would be blocking it from coming up, yet keeps it running in the background? As I already mentioned, I've already reinstalled BTS...

Thanks.

Kael! how was LA?

It wasn't LA it was Las Vegas and it was awesome! I saw Ka and O and had a great time!

@Omegon3- I dont know, you are definitly way outside of the typical FfH issues though so Im trying to help get you back inside the box.

Do you have any idea of where I could go for help? I posted some messages to a couple of links provided by Opferlamm (they appeared to be the right places in the Civ 4 forum) and thus far I've only gotten one response that didn't do the job (hold SHIFT down while running the program to clear the cache -- but the guy wasn't sure if this was the actual command). Either no one has read the posts or no one has a suggestion. I've also gone to the Firaxis web site and their technical support is virtually worthless.

I really miss FfH. I'm currently playing Warlords (hence the idea I have that reinstalling Civ 4 wouldn't do me much good since this game runs great) and, compared to FfH (or even BTS) it is pretty boring -- but at least I'm getting a little of the "fix" that I need.

If you have any suggestions, I'll be more than happy to try them because this is EXTREMELY frustating. There must be SOMETHING out there that hangs around between reboots (and even between deinstalling and reinstalling software since I've also done that for BTS!!) to block BTS from running (or producing a screen since it IS running in the background) -- something that doesn't impact the other versions.

By the way, sounds like you had a GREAT time in LV -- those shows look totally awe-inspiring (the wife and I caught a little of Circus de Soleil at Disney World but nothing like what you saw!). Just out of curiousity, living in Ohio are you a Buckeye fan? I grew up in Marysville if you have any idea where that is.

Patch "e" is linked in the first post. It won't break save games and resolves the following issues:

1. Evil civs will declare war on those nearing completetion of the Altar of the Luonnotar.
2. Updated Graveyard graphics by seZereth.
3. Pirate coves cannot be built within 3 tiles of each other.
4. Fixed a CtD caused by the Elven Mercenaries event.
5. Fixed an issue with the Citadel of Light (thanks Sto!).
6. Fixed an error when a Beast of Agares kills a Paladin (thanks Sto!).
7. Fixed the Amurite Pilgrimage event, Malakim Pigrimage event, Trent Spawning, Mealstrom, Kidnap spell and Teleport spells so they wont cause WoC's (thanks Sto!).
8. The Ogre Mercenaries event won't trigger automatically with the founding of the Guild of the Nine.
9. Hyborem's Whisper will only trigger in single player games (was causing OOS's).
10. New Ljosalfar Mage model by seZereth.
11. Player options will follow you if you switch players (so you wait at end of turn will be set when you switch to Hyborem).
12. Maelstrom reduced from an average of 25% damage to 15% damage.
13. Tower of Mastery moved from Arcane Lore to Strength of Will.
14. Free Sage moved from Writing to Arcane Lore.
15. Illusions cannot pickup equipment anymore.
16. There is a visual cue (the great wall graphics around the empire) when the Sanctuary effect is in place.
17. Wolves have a 10% chance to upgrade to wolf packs when defeating units.
18. Wolf packs have a 10% chance to spawn new wolves when defeating opponents.
19. Pyre Zombie explosions won't start wars.
20. Hidden Nationality units can create units through combat (not capture, but they can spawn baby spiders, werewolves, wolves, etc).
21. War Elephants reduced from 8 to 7 strength.
22. Dwarven Smith production bonus increased from +10% to +20%, it is half cost with Industrious, and removes the Rusted promotion.
23. Slave hurry amount reduced from 15 to 10.
24. Repentant Angels get -1 strength when they kill living units (instead of +4 strength).
25. Fix to keep Burning Sands expiration from causing CtD's (only seemed to effect Vista, thanks Calbrenar!).

Wow!! I haven't played FFH in about a year, and its amazing the changes that have been made.

Will media pack .30 work with .31 or should I just wait? I've not played a version with the media pack I'm not sure what's in it.

Fantastic mod! Keep up the good work!

I'd wait for it. I have it wrapped on my hard drive right now and I'll be uploading the new media pack later today.

I've discovered a little more about my current "little" problem regarding the inability to play FfH (the BTS game never brings up a screen, but remains running in the background). I switch to my wife's account on my computer (she always plays under my account) and tried running BTS there -- it runs like a champ!!! So... There doesn't appear to be anything actually wrong with the game. Instead it seems to be a problem with my own personal account that keeps BTS from running.

Does this help anyone in coming up with an idea on what I can try to fix this?

Thanks again.
