Does anyone know if the mod packs available to download will work on the Mac system?

If you have the older (MacSoft?) version you can only use mods that are available for plain vanilla civ. DYP and The Ancient Mediterranean are two good ones. If you have the new Civ3 Complete you should be able to play any of the mods. Check out the Mac forums for more info.

Unfortunately, that is not true.
I have tried to download and install "Rhye's of Civilization" several different ways, including the small .zip method provided, and have been unable to make it work on C3c 1.22.
Though it was a little tricky, I was able to install "Master of Myrror" onto my Mac, and I explain what I did near the end of the Master of Myrror thread.
As far as "Warhammer" I have also had no success with any approach.
Short of buying "Virtual PC" and installing Windows on my mac, these mods are presently beyond my reach.

As Civ4 gobbles up more and more PC players, it seems to me that the Civ3 mod makers have a new market opening up for their wares as Mac users rush out and buy the long-awaited Civ Complete package.

Some mod makers have happened to package their products in a way that allows them to be unpacked and installed onto a Mac. DyP and RAR can be unstuffed almost transparently using standard Mac OS free software, though I suspect it wasn't a coscious decision. As promethean_beta has shows, a little more ingenuity and some rather geeky shareware enables Master of Myrror to be installed. However, a lot of Windows installers simply won't give up their contents to these tools.

Virtual PC sounds like a place I wouldn't want to go. I have a "rescue" PC - like a rescue dog, but not as furry or friendly - an old P100 running 98se. I'd rather use something like that than spend good money on M$ VPC.

I've run the Rhye's of Civilization installer on my PC, installing straight into Civ3 Complete's Scenarios folder on my Mac, via a LAN connection. That bit works, but you then need to do an extra trick to make it run.

The folder structure on the Mac version is not quite the same as in a PC installation. The unit .ini files in the mod have references that are supposed to find the standard units and fail. This is because the vanilla Civ3 /Art/, /sounds/ and /Text/ folders are stashed one layer down from their PC home, in /Civ III Complete/Civilization 3 Game Data/. You can overcome this by option dragging copies of those folders into /Civ III Complete/ (leave the originals where they are, otherwise something else might break). Having done this I was able to start a Rhye's of Civ game.

So in summary, I think all we really need is for the mod makers who've built Windows installers to recognise their new Mac customers, and to provide simple .zip copies of their packages.

Over the last feew days I have run ROTCWinters Middle Earth and the Warhammer 2 MODs on a Mac. I'm running the latest and greatest 10.4. I have yet to Rhys, I'll check it in a day or so.

Virtual PC not needed.

I havent posted on this frum before but I could do an attachment using Microsoft Word with pictures to show what you need to do.

A list of the tools that can extract data from .exe files would be good. See my post above re. Rhye's. He uses Setup Generator Pro from gentee, and his installer doesn't respond to Stuffit or to promethean's trick.

However, I still believe the easiest way forward is for mod makers to deliver cross-platform packages now that the audience has widened, rather than for Mac users to run around looking for hacks.

I just downloaded the several part series of .zip's that Rhye has posted on his website, and I tried AlanH's trick with duplicating Art, sound, and text up a file level for Rhye's mod.
It worked fine. Thanks for the tip

Yes, please! And maybe post it or reference it in the Mac forum also, for the sake of those who haven't seen this thread.

ok, give me a few days to nut it out then i'll send the attacment. also, i was running warhammer 2 last night, after 150+ turns got another problem (but resolved it by creating a new folder). So I'll wait until I get close to finishing and then i'll put it all together...

cheers, phil

It's good to hear that the Mac users can get their hands on more mods these days. I think most mods and scenarios are uploaded in simple Zip files, so hopefully there's a lot of choice there...

Apologies for the bump, but it's driving me nuts wondering if pvincent100 has found a way to make Warhammer's installer work on the mac.
Phil, even just some guidence in how to install Warhammer would be wonderful.

Hi,

ok, ive have almost finished wh2 on a random map and started on the warhammer world map proper. i believe the problems we face are due to how folders are placed when creating through say a 'wizard .exe' files. The good news is the mac osx system (being unix) its easy to fix. tonight i will do a pretty microsoft word document with pictures (and also a .pdf if you dont have microsoft office for mac). essentially you need to create one new folder, and you need to copy some 'unit' folders from your dvd to the warhammer folder on your hardrive. this will fix our problems. i suspect for the other senarios a similar 'unit' folder copying needs to be done (which i found with D&D).

as a side note, having an army of Great Red Dragons is a real blast (no pun intended) and a heap of awesome fun!!!!!

Phil
