ModCast 40: "Reboning"

You guys don't play RFC and/or RFC Rand? You can play RFC RAND on small maps!
Maniac, play that first and comment again.

Never played Rand, because after i knew, that it exists, i didn't have the time to (or the time to play anything else...).
... and this doesn't sound like a positive comment...

I was under the assumption the panelists actually play the mods they comment on.

we play many but not all mods. like spotlight mods we usually play, but art mods, we just admire the screenshots (not load a test mod to look at the graphics in game). with code mods, we dont compile them into our mods, we just read the comments and Kenneth goes over the code with his deranged arch-coder mind.

i admit there were many episodes when we didnt play the mod, and we put a stop to that, that was lame.

I tend to jump right to the point, but let me just say I still enjoy listening to every episode of Modcast and I suspect you still have a large crowd of listeners ( definitely more than 4 ;) )

I noticed there's somewhat of a decline in free time for the panel members to play mods. Garret raising children, Impaler all civved out (?), Locutus busy with a new job (?). The most interesting comments are when you guys actually do know the mod (for example: Garrets comment on earth worms in Planetfall).

For art mods, screenshots suffice and Impaler's code reviewing is interesting, although it ends in "not sure how this will work in the game" a lot and I kinda miss Locutus' carthography room section.

There's a recent discussion on weplayciv.com going on (thread on Modcast #39) with the idea of using mod reviewers to supplement Modcast. Maybe there's a chance to implement this to keep the quality of the show. Any good show needs a team of writers...

I have to generally agree with this. I have noticed that interest/direct knowlege on the part of the hosts seems to be... welll... dwindling. I don't mean it in an offensive way, you guys are great, its just what it seems like. I understand people don't like being told they should be doing better, but honestly you might want to refreshen the hosting staff a bit. If anything just to get interest up.

yes. and it comes down to the fact that we all love civ, but most are burned out on civ4. i think that its release will revitalize the community. I have always wanted some outside reviews, and this is something phungus420 mentioned as well. if you know anyone who is already reviewing mods, let them know we are interested.

You should bring on a total dick and just have him trash mods. It would be hilarious... although I'd hate it if he trashed mine.

I think you should have a couple of respected members of the civ community try out a couple of mods, and just have them talk about the experience. Invite TheMeInTeam on the show, have him play a couple of mods (like LoR and PIG), and get feedback from him; you could do this with a couple members of the civ community. At least that's what I'd like to see a couple of episodes do.

that sounds like fun too! themeinteam has done a whole bunch of multiplayer right? as well as some modding if im not mistaken. hey phungus, can you get him to post over here?
