Modern Armor Alternatives?

There should be a few alternative modern armor units, like the T-72 or the Leopord 2 tanks! I'd absolutely start making these units but I'm lame at making units for CIV 3. Why, I'm so lame that after trying unsuccessfully to make Civ2 units for several years, I figured it out by the time Civ 3 came out. :( Oh well, someone make a T-72 or other modern tanks please!

That looks great Winter. It would be like a flavor unit or something. Like the Leapord could be a German upgrade from the Panzer. Or the custom T-34's would upgrade into a t-72 or T-80! Oh will someone make a T-34 at least? ;_;

our team member Kentonio has done an awesome T-34. Also, Smoking Mirror has done too another T-34. jus take a look in the Unit Creation forum
Bye!!!:king:

Whoops. Typo. I mean T-72! ;_; Well I got a the T-34 already. :P

Oh yes! Some alternatives to Modern Armour would be lovely! I've downloaded all the excellent WWII tanks, and they add a lot of spice to war in the Industrial ear. But as soon as I hit the tech for Modern Armour, and the rest of the civs do the same, war becomes a lot more dull to look at.

If someone could make a few alternatives, like the already mentioned modern German, or Russian tanks, that would be nice.

Why assume that every Civ's military needs MBTs (Main Battle Tanks)?

A non-militaristic Civ with defensible terrain might very well emulate Sweden and produce the "S Tank" -- actually not a tank (turretless) but with a very low profile, relatively low ground pressure, and a decent gun. Relatively inexpensive, not great on the offense (those turrets are really helpful), but possibly very, very good on the defense.

A modern Civ facing a WWII-esque challenge might emulate and update America's WWII decision to build Shermans -- light enough to ship across oceans in quantity -- by building LAVs (Light Armored Vehicles -- wheeled) just as the USMC and the French Foreign Legion have done. Fast and very good on the offense while suffering some on the defense.

Let's also not forget that hovercraft -- Surface Effects Vehicles -- do exist and these, sufficiently armed and armored, might readily quailfy as a "tank" in, oh, say, the Mekong Delta (where I believe they were actually employed -- granted, not as tanks; but it's not really so radical, given that Austria-Hungary tried to build the first SEV in WWI). Of course, this would ideally work with a different terrain/mobility class, but I know we're all dreaming of a decent scenario editor ...

Best,

Oz

I liked your point about Sweden and the S tanks... probably a good idea for some of the other civs...

However, you call LAVs good on offense? and only suffering SOME on defense? I've heard the opposite actually... LAVs just can't cut it (for warfare anyway, and not peacekeeping ops) and should never be used to replace MBTs... which is what the US is planning to do unfortunately.

LAVs

Hey I like the Idea of LAVs and hover craft and S-tanks, but I need good projection drawings before I can make them.;)

I spent most of yesterday looking for good shots of the MBTs used by all the major powers, such as the leopard 2 but they are a bit thin on the ground compared to WWII tanks. I did find an amusing site where they reviewed each coutries MBT like in a car magazine, giving them marks out of ten and showing their price in dollars. Most amusing (the leopard only got three out of ten, though the best tank only got six  so i guess that should be three out of six then)
I am thinking of doing some early cold war units for a post war mod (c1950-60s), the new expansion pack is supposed to have a good WWII mod in it, so I thought I may as well start filling the holes left in unit progression later on. What tank did the Americans use imediately after WWII? And could some one post a shot of the S-tank, I couldn't find one anywhere.

Have you still got the address of that website? I'd love to have a look it!

I can't find it yet.:( its not on my history tab, and I can't remember the exact terms I used for the search. I am having another go at finding it though.

I don't think America suddenly dropped the Sherman after WW2. I figure they used the Pershing tanks or something like that and eventually moved up to the M-60 and up to the now famous M1A1 Abrams.

But yes, these LAV's and Hovercrafts and "S-Tanks" are also a nice idea too. Perhaps a hovercraft unit could have the wheeled flag checked 'cause they can't possibly go up mountains and jungles would be kind of difficult... or would it? I dunno. :P

Finally, sgrig could make a T-55 for that post-war Mod he's thinking about. :)

Believe it or not, an AMAZING site devoted to Swedish armor (includes S-Tank, Centurion, and Leopard II):

http://w1.500.telia.com/~u50015076/

... make that TWO great sites, this one called "Mechanized Vikings"!:

Both are very good, and very spirited -- makes one rather glad those chaps no longer go a-Viking ...

they kept on using the WWII era tanks, like Shermans, M-24 Chafees, M-26 pershings, and they eventually added M-48s and M-60s...

The Russian can have T-90 (MBT)

Reactive Armor are used but it is still
less well armor than nato tank (defense -2)

Active Protection System, help it to see
enemy anti-tank weapon. (-1 production cost)

sniper missile allow it to snip enemy with
bombardment. (12 bombard, 1 range, 1 rate, can't kill)

not more than 50 tons allow them
to travel on soften ground. (speed +1)

not really accurate,
but it will be fun ! ;)

Yeah it would be fun if someone actually made it. u.u Oh well. I don't think a -2 in defence would be... well actually it could... actually yes, that would be a good idea. I'd assume that Soviet tanks are for offensive purposes, not defenses. Maybe a +2 offensive to compensate?
