Has anyone used non-PTW MODs? Has anyone used any of the Graphics MODs found on the PC side?If anyone has used them what would you recommend?
any info would be good.....
thx

Yes. All graphic mods should work, such as Snoopy's terrain mod. Surf the creation thread for graphic mods and try them out, see what you like.

I've tried a couple of terrain modes and resources mods. They worked fine. The only games I've tried with modded units, civs and rules have been the GOTMs. They work as well.

Given that experience I'd say if a mod is done properly it will work. If it isn't, it may fail, and will probably fail on a PC as well.

I have a question about the graphics mods. Since loading a bundle of GOTM stuff on my computer, every new game I start the horses, iron and one of the luxury resoureces show as predator, conquest, and open.

Does anyone know off the top of their head which file that is so I can move it out when I play non GOTM games?

(ps - I don't have enough room on my machine to keep two full Civ3 apps).

thanx

There are two files that are used to display the bonus and strategic resources:

resources.pcx and resources_shadows.pcx.

Here's what you would have done to play GOTM:

If you followed the original instructions for GOTM then you should have these two files in the Art folder in your installed application folder. You should also have a folder called "resources storage". This should contain folders for various gotm resource options plus one called "my original resources folder". You should have placed yor original resources.pcx in that last folder and moved the gotm resources out of their resources storage location and up to the Art folder. If you use my new full gotm23 installer on a fresh copy of civ3 1.29 it does all that for you.

Here's what you need to do now:

You now want to reverse that process to play ordinary civ3 games. So you need to put the current Art/resources.pcx and Art/resources_shadows.pcx files away in one of the gotm folders and transfer resources.pcx from "my original resources folder" to Art (standard civ3 doesn't have the resources_shadows.pcx file)

Have I totally confused you? :)

No, I got it. Are these files required to play GOTM or there for the fun of it?

Thanks

From gotm20 onwards, Cracker scrambled the resource images to make it more difficult for people to use the non-gotm mod packs that allow them to see resources peeking out from under the fog.

So when you want to play your next gotm you will need to do the same procedure again in reverse. If you don't change the files you will not see the gotm resources correctly. You will need to transfer the two GOTM21 resources files back into Art.

You probably have three gotm20 folders and three gotm21 folders. They have names that indicate whether the resource images come with little blips and/or happy faces and you can choose one of the pairs of files for the game you want to play. If you don't ever want to use one of these options you can throw that set away.

The gotm20 resources are only valid for gotm20. The gotm21 files are for any gotm more recent than #20, and the standard Civ3 "factory" set are for any other standard or gotm game. If you don't ever want to play gotm20 again you can throw all the gotm20 folders away.

You really are strapped for disk space, aren't you :)

Funny you should mention the resource_shadow.pcx and the resource.pcx. I read through all the info on the GOTMs up to the current time and followed them to the letter, and removed them just like Alan H wrote. (thanks for the heads up on the MODs from everyone btw). My problem was getting the GOTM started?
(this question should probably be in a GOTM thread, but heck since the ball is rolling, I thought I would ask anyway...)

There isn't an actual question in your post ;) What went wrong when you tried to start the game? Guessing at questions you might be asking, here are some answers:

1. Where do I get the start file?

You need a starting .sav file to play each game. You find the download url for the game in the readme that comes with the files for it. It's Cracker's way of ensuring that you don't download the game until you've RTFM.

2. Why does Civ3 crash when I start a gotm?

If your gotm installation is incorrect it will probably crash the game or give you strange resource graphics effects like n8mac's problem. You could download my installer (the link's in my sig) and start again with a clean civ3 1.29 installation.

3. How should I play a gotm?

If you want to know what to do with your units at turn #0 then the pregame threads are the best place to get game playing tips. Also look at the spoiler posts for past games to see how the great players take control of the game and achieve insane finish dates.

My problems were:
1. like you said lack of the .sav file of Cracker's.
2. The unusual corruption of resource graphics, ergo which made me take the .pcx files out and replace them with the civ originals. There weren't any other problems to speak of. So in other words multiple complications and the GOTM was DOA.
So do you think a clean install would be in order?
Sorry my last question post was a little vague. thanks for all the info.
