Mods on a Mac?

Hi,

What mods are available for use on Civ 3 Complete for Mac?

How do I go about getting hold of such Mods and how do I install them.
For example, I'd like to use the double-your-pleasure mod, but don't know where to download the extra graphics for the Mac version.

I went to the Civ 3 Modding section, but all those mods seem to be Windows only Mods.

I tried doing a forum search, but the only useful threads are so long that its virtually impossible to find the useful information in those threads.

Sorry if I'm being dense, but any help would be appreciated.

Welcome! I play TAM & RFRE on my Mac. In general mods work for Mac as well as PC versions. Zipped archives can be handled by Stuffit Expander. The forum thread or a read me file will tell you where to install the files. Some mods are offered for download as a "self-extracting" archive. The Mac OS will not handle the extraction properly. Those particular mods must be extracted on a PC and then transfered to a Mac for installation. I believe the DYP mod is for vanilla Civ. The equivalent Conquests mod is Rise and Rule. I know I've just scratched the surface of answering your questions. Please feel free to ask in more detail.

Double your Pleasure is for Vanilla. The Complete equivalent is called Rise and Rule. Both come as Windows installers, but both can be extracted using Stuffit Expander on a Mac. The result is a folder containing subfolders and files, and a .biq file. You should place the folder and .biq file in your Civ3/Conquests Game Data/Scenarios/ folder. Then launch Civ3 Complete and select Civ-Content in the main menu. Select the Rise & Rule .biq file and run.

Thanks for the help.

However Alan H, your instructions didn't completely work. In fact I got the problem as described in this thread:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=176038

And going by what you said in that thread, I'm guessing there's no easy and simple solution.

Having just bought Civ 3 Complete & Civ 4 for Mac (having migrated from PC), I have to say I'm very disappointed with the quality of the ports.

The only difference I can see between what I said above and what I said in the other thread was the level of detail, followed by the acknowledgement that Synergy67 had found an additional set of files that are needed to upgrade RAR 1.02 to run with Conquests. Have you done that bit? If this is what's causing you problems, it's hardly a problem with the port, just a problem with the mod.

But in that thread you said:

This is an error I recognise, and I suspect you haven't followed all of the instructions I gave for installing RAR on a Mac. You have to actually replace the core pediaIcons.txt file, and a few others if I recall correctly, because the current release doesn't play nice with mods. You can't just drop the mod into the Scenarios folder. This is one of the many reasons we are waiting for Aspyr's patch.

I'm confused.

Anyway, all I did was drop the RAR files & folder into the Scenario folder as you instructed. But no dice.

I downloaded from here:

http://www.3ddownloads.com/civfanatics/civ3/modpacks/RAR_1.02_Full.exe

I got the link from the Modding subforum in the PC Civ 3 section. The download page specifically says that the R&R is version 1.02 for Conquests. So I'm guessing it is correct.

My later post in that thread admitted my error and gave the same instructions as above. Synergy then said he had done that and still had an error, and found he could fix it by finding some extra files. What error are you getting ... .precisely?

Hey Quesdadt. You probably need to visit the RaR download page and get the following:

"Extras Patch v.1
RAR 1.02 compatible Patch adding the missing 'extras' that were included on the original Play The World expansion disc, but subsequently left out of just about every later release and re-release (including Civ3:Gold and Civ3:Complete)"

There are unit animations and a few other things included here you need to add into the RaR folders from the main 1.02 download. It should be self-explanatory what needs to go where when you extract it with Stuffit. Go here to find the link to the extras patch:

http://civ3.bernskov.com/RaR/download.asp

It's 22 MB of additional stuff...significant, no? Good luck and let me know if you get it working.

Thanks Synergy. I downloaded that patch, and put the art files in the:

applications/ civ3complete/ conquestsgamedata/ sceranio/ RAR/ Art/ Units folder

(as the art files are Unit art)- but again, no dice. Am I putting it in the wrong place?

Exactly the same one he got:

The error indicates that the software is looking in /Conquests Game Data/text/pediaIcons.txt for an entry for the Palace Garden.

The /Conquests Game Data/text/pediaIcons.txt file is the standard one for C3C, and doesn't contain this mod entry. As a wild guess, I'd suggest replacing that file with a copy of the one from the scenario ... but it *is* a wild guess.

I didn't have to replace the main Conquests game data pediaicons text file. The one with the palace gardens is in the pediaicons file in my RaR scenario folder in the Conquests/Game Data/Scenarios folder. I'd maybe delete your entire RaR folder and start over: Download RaR 1.02 from the same site I previously listed or use a saved download if you already have one unaltered. Add the extra unit animations and anything in the extras download to the appropriate folders, replacing any duplicates with the extras versions (I can't remember, but I think there were some duplicates?) Drop the RaR main folder and the two RaR biqs into the Conquests/Game Data/Scenarios folder. Hopefully it's happy. I think this is what finally worked for me: a fresh full reattempt from scratch.

Well I tried it, and what d'ya know - it worked!

I don't know why - I did exactly the same thing as I did before, but this time it worked. Oh well.

Thanks Synergy & AlanH for your help.

Is there some secret way to unstuff Rhye's of Civilization? StuffIt Expander works on RAR, but it refuses to do anything with this file.

EDIT: Sigh. I guess not..

I'm just downloading TCW. I'll come back and let you know how it goes and if I needed to do anything to persuade it to run.

No problems as far as I can tell. I expanded it into the /Civ III/Conquests Game Data/Scenarios/ folder, fired up Civ3 Complete, selected TCW.biq as the scenario, and started a game as the UK. I haven't played it as I have other things to do, but I checked around the F1-F6 screens, checked out the map and scrolled about a bit, opened a few Civilopedia entries, and it all seemed to behave well.

Nice job :goodjob: Well done :D

sounds great AlanH. :)

those file path directories you post of are alien to me  but if you say so!

the UK is a fun position if you move forward w/ the game. there's also a great MP biq for it as well - and it's quite a blast w/ all humans.
