monarch to emperor

I see it was zipped very well, not used to seeing them go from 2m+ to 200k. I would not worry about what to build as you need to get out of despotism. That is going to probably get 7 or more turns of anarchy at this point, but has to be done.

Why did you stay in it till now, just unwilling to bite the bullet? I would sell off most of those spear during the anarchy by moving them to some place that could use the shields.

You have a lot of units that are regulars. I would not build a barracks in Guida, it cannot afford to make troops anyway. Don't build cannons in towns with a barracks, they do not get vet status anyway.

You want to watch for things like making a university in a town that is 4 beakers. That is an expensive build. Harbors in cities that are not going to work coastal tiles. Colosseums, just don't make them.

In short each structure has to be useful and affordable, unless it is critical. That would be something like a wall in a frontline town during a war. A barracks in the same conditions or a harbor to grow and growing is useful in that town.

Here I mean, I am not going to put up a harbor in a tundra town as it will not pay off and is not critical.

it was about 2.4 megs before I zipped it ..

Again, I'm no expert but a couple of thoughts that may be redundant:
Worker addignment seems off- Utrecht is working unimproved tiles and you have a worker chopping and another cleaning damage in the mountains. The large area near Hilversum is well developed but there are no cities working the mined and roaded tiles. I'd squash some cities in and you'll have a productive core near the FP. The area near your capital is underdeveloped with several cities working unimproved tiles. Meanwhile you have a group over workers near corrupt Delft draining swamps etc. I prefer to group my workers to finish projects in a shorter time. 2 mines finished aft er 6 turns is more wastedul than 1 in 3 and another in 3.
Zwolle is corrupt and when you build your library, you'll spend more in support than you gain. Middleberg is building a coastal fortress. I don't beleive I've ever built one-the AI doesn't do much with naval attacks in my expereince.
The Hague has a barracks and a harbor and you're building a cannon. I prefer to build artillary uits in non-barracked towns as they can't have vet units. You've met eveyone but personally I like to explore the map more. I might send a boat over towards the Persians and check the lay of the land (that's just my play style though).

Thanks guys, this is my first serious stab at emperor so all points noted and appreciated. Grr at the coastal fortress, I'd missed it but will correct that next time I play.
The despotism is bad, probably my biggest fail but I'm planning on changing govs when I get Mil tradition and have cavalry to ward off attacks. Germany has attacked me twice so far. I'll probably jump to monarchy because I dont think the trerrain will suppport Republic yet. I'm trying to work the ends of my empire first then move the workers in and keep them safe while I war. Probably going to hit Persia first because its got luxuries nearby. Good point about the cannons, I will swop to build vet units in towns with barracks and build a stock of cannon from non-barracked towns. I think its a failing because I'm used to having barracks everywhere at Monarch. The one part that always gets me is building stuff that isnt profitable. Its definitely more important at higher levels and something I need to get my head round. Its been useful because I'm analyzing this gamne more and spent a whuile last night cataloging my errors as I saw them. I'll' play some turns later and see what improvements I can make.

The temptation to work tiles in towns outside of the core is strong, but not useful. Unless you have all the tiles in the core improved, and except for resource/lux let the far off towns wait.

No value in improving tiles in corrupt towns, while citizens in core towns work unimproved tiles.

I am definately NOT and expert, but I am looking at my first win on Emperor soon. It will be long and bloody, but I think that a win is in the bag. This will be a bit repetative with vmxa, but somethings that I have started to do that I never paid much attention to are:

1. I alwasy assumed that having a marketplace in every city was the best course of action, regardless of cost. Now I pay much more attention to how much gold is being added to the treasury and how big the town will grow before making the commitment. A lot of the time, size doesn't even matter. Make those unhappy workers into taxmen or something else of use - at least in corrupt cities.

2. I find that buying techs are cheaper than researching it myself. This was a big step for me. No need for those libraries and universities. This might not always be true, but that is why you need to analyze the cost/benefit. If you decide to add a library/university (for the purpose of research, not culture), check how many beakers you will receive. Low beaker towns means no library etc (and probably no other improvements if it is that corrupt).

3. Trade is much more important. You can generally ignore the AI in Monarch and below if you want. You are generally strong enough to take the lead with only a few good purchases. This is no longer true. In the game I am currently playing, I had the opportunity to take control of the trading. I waved at it as it passed by. Now that I see the errors of my way, I am playing catch up - which is why this win is going to be long and bloody. Lesson learned. Check trading each round, no matter how tedious it may seem. It is even more tedious later - and less fun - when you are trying to catch up from behind.:(

4. Maximize gpt. This seems like a given anyway, but I found that I am squeezing every gold I can find now. I never understood why you would sell a building you already own, but that upkeep can be the difference between having another cavalry or artillary unit and having a library. If no one is reading the books, sell it off for a cannon. Exactly how you reap those shields from a libary I don't know - maybe the cannon fires books. Guns for books anyone?:ar15:

Edit - 5. When a player like vmxa suggests that you should read an article, take their advice. Although reading won't teach you everything, it will be very helpful. Thanks vmxa and everyone else that takes the time to help new and developing players!

Definitely, Monarch to Emperor the Great Leap and Multiplier Buildings are 2 of the most important articles. Civ seems to require different strategies at each level. At the moment I'm working on the strategy that works for me because I dont think the articles tell the whole story. Thats why I posted the save because I know its full of mistakes. Basically at Emperor its best to build as little as possible, except units, and those from cities with barracks.

Nothing wrong with that one, but it does not tell how to do anything. It is just a nice overview and no psecifics. I prefer to put details of what is being done and why. Then people can decide if that makes sense and use it or adjust it or ignore it.

Check trading each round, no matter how tedious it may seem.
Both CivAssist II and MapStat/CrpSuite will do that for you, so you don't have to visit each AI each turn. You only have to check with the program to see what is open for trading. They don't tell you what the deals are, only that Egypt has so much money, so many workers in the capital, and what techs they have that you don't and vice versa.

Both are very handy.
