Monarch unfairness

Are you buying at monopoly prices? If only one Civ has a particular tech, they will charge a lot for it (as they should!). Wait until a few other Civs have the tech and then the price will go down. Welcome to CFC by the way.

I'm in the same situation as Sivatipo. I do fine on Regent, but as soon as I move up the evil empires kick my a**. Currently, I'm playing Hiawatha on a standard panagea world. I crushed the Vikings and the Spanish and got them down to one city each. The Koreans appeared and started to colonize all over the main continent. They're six techs ahead, I have no harbors, and they just declared war. I have mounted warrior and they have Fuedalism. Any advice? P.s. The Koreans are not on the main continent.

The key to moving up is usually more attention to details, namely micromanagement. Minimize waste of shields, food, and commerce and you will see a more efficient empire. It's amazing how all the little things add up. In regards to your specific situation, Admiral Kutzov, I would recommend building a bunch of Mounted Warriors and taking several of the Korean cities near yours. Since they are colonizing a new landmass, they will probably not have a great road network, so you can probably catch many of their cities with spearmen and not pikemen, and Mounted Warriors cut through spearmen like a hot knife through butter. After you have taken 3-5 cities, they will probably be willing to give up tech for peace. If not, take a few more until they will give you tech. On another note, imagine my chagrin when I actually broke a knife trying to cut butter. I mean, I know it's supposed to be a "hot" knife, but still....

That's certainly true. In the past, I never bothered worrying about the research slider, but it's amazing what saving a few gold here and there does over the course of a game. In the middle ages and later, you can easily save 100 gold per technology. 100 gold comes in mighty handy when rushing an improvement, running a deficit in research, or buying a tech from a civ.

once you go scientific baby, you will never go back hehe

my second favorite type of civ is industrious because of the production bonuses you can receive later on modern history

I keep hearing this wisdom... but last night when we (4 civs on my continent) discovered the new world -- or they discovered us, whichever-- I tried to buy navigation.... every other civ(8) had it, and all wanted 1180 gold for it...none of them even had that much gold... All of them together didnt have that much. A couple had chemistry, but would not sell.. either I did not have enough(2850) or they were just holding on to it.
