Monarch vs Emperor levels

Just a few other thoughts here:

When I made the jump from Monarch to Emporer, the biggest mental struggle I had to get over was that the Tech pace was usually just obscene! It really pissed me off because I was used to researching on my own on the lower levels. As soon as I re-evaluated things, overcame the mental hurdle, and learned to trade for techs and not do hardly any self-research until the Industrial ages, Emporer level became far, far easier for me.

I actually like Emporer level the best (or a tough variant on Monarch). I've won quite a few Diety games now, but I didn't really ENJOY it. The challenge was there certainly, but I could very rarely build up a kick-butt army and go on a blitz like I could on Emporer or Monarch. After a while, the lack of combat just gets kind of boring.

Also a note about the levels - Play the level that you have the most fun at. After a stressful day at work, it's not very relaxing to come home and spend your limited free time playing a game on Diety level where one little slip-up will screw your game over. If I wanted that type of stress, I would like to get paid for it! :lol:

Reubberjello, I know exactly what you mean. After a demoralizing day at work, I went home and started a WARLORD (or whatever that level is called in Civ3) game on a huge archapeligo. It was fun to not go too seriously after the tech road, ignore diplomacy, ignore micromanaging, ignore tech priorities and just build a powerfull economy.

No way I'll be able to finish such a game (the mop-up), but I didn't feel like loading up the deity game where I was trailing the ai and managing an army of workers.

@Rubberjello and York:

On the same note, I sometimes play chieftain games :blush:

When RL gets too bad and I am depressed I take it out on the hapless chieftain AI. (So I am a sadist, sue me :) ).
