Round 5: 1200 AD - 1625 AD ... "The Beginning of the End"

Once again, I've changed my reporting format. :crazyeye:

Apparently, the AutoLog is ginormous and doesn't fit in a post (greater than 30,000 characters!)

So, I trimmed it down to the "important" stuff and attached the complete file to this post.

Also, all of my commentary is at the top now with no pictures. Screenshots are inserted where applicable into the AutoLog entries.

Spoiler :
SUMMARY:

I started the Round thinking I needed to emphasize 5 major 'themes':

  • Spread Hinduism to each of my cities.
  • Whip infrastructure and units like a madman.
  • Get a unit to Level 4 (HE in Cologne).
  • Impede Sitting Bull's expansion.
  • Prepare invasion force against Karakorum (100% EP against).

My specific ideas were:

  • Capture Bactrian (4 new resources: Corn, Spices, Deer, Fur).
  • Settle Moai between Cologne and Angle (1 new resource: Gold).
  • Capture and re-settle New Angle 1S (3 new resources: Rice, Silk, Pig).
  • Settle south of Cologne (2 new resources: Crab, Sheep).
  • Emphasize heavy Culture in Hsung-Nu & Stuttgart.
  • Chop Palace in New Angle.
  • Build Forbidden Palace in Munich.

My eventual goals (Round 6+) were:

  • Start a 'never ending' Golden Age.
  • Build Globe Theatre in Karakorum.
  • Conquer (or Dominate) the planet.

--------

Except for Settling the Crab/Sheep city south of Cologne, the above lists accurately summarize how the rest of my game played out.

In preparation for invading Karakorum, I put 100% EP towards KK and camped both wandering spies outside Karakorum on Caravels until 5 turns before my planned invasion (so they'd have a -50% cost bonus come time to use them).

One of the Spies was discovered, but the other miraculously succeeded with just a 56% chance of success!

I converted Karakorum into the Drafting Theatre (which almost took too long, since I also needed 10% Culture). By game's end, it was responsible for 63 Riflemen. They were all used for Defensive Garrison (CG1) so my City Raider and Combat promoted Riflemen could continue pushing forward.

It was all ez-mode after starting the 60 Turn Golden Age! I popped 2 GAs in Berlin and so figured there was no better application. (Taj Mahal) + (Music GA) + (GA, GP) + (GA, Physics GS, Communism GSpy) = 4 MoM-enhanced Golden Ages!

I also spent a GS and the Economics GM to partially bulb Printing Press and Constitution.

The order of Vassalization was:

  • Kublai Khan in 1625 AD.
  • Louis XIV in 1708 AD.
  • Joao II and his Colony, Washington in 1780 AD.
  • Tokugawa in 1794 AD.
  • Suleiman (destroyed) in 1810 AD.
  • Sitting Bull in 1830 AD.

--------

I attribute the majority of my success to the ridiculously long Golden Age (1650 AD to 1800 AD)!

The second most important factor was completing the Harbourmaster quest, which resulted in overpowered 4-move Galleys and 6-move Galleons/Frigates!

I'm still undecided about how important early Astronomy was. I didn't build my first Galleon until 1405 (36 turns in) or promote my first Frigate until 1575 (70 turns in). IDK ... maybe I just didn't exploit it properly.?

--------

The City Specializations worth mentioning were:

  • Berlin: National Epic - Great People.
  • Bremen: Moai Statues - Frigates & Galleons.
  • Cologne: Heroic Epic - CR2 Riflemen (assault).
  • New Angle: Ironworks - CR2 Cannons (assault).
  • Dusseldorf: Mines & Lumbermills - C2 Riflemen (stack defense).
  • Karakorum: Globe Theatre - CG1 Riflemen (stack relief).
  • Hanover: Mines & Lumbermills - C2 Riflemen (Sitting Bull fodder / deterant).
  • All other cities: Hybrid - Infrastructure & Self-Garrison.

I wish I knew why I was unable to get SB to capitulate in my game. It took forever to capture all those cities.

Also, I've never gotten an AI and his vassal to capitulate at the same time, is there some trick I'm missing?

I wish I knew why I was unable to get SB to capitulate in my game. It took forever to capture all those cities.

I've found only 2 "sure ways" to entice capitulation:

  • Conquer half of the civ's cities.
  • Capture the civ's capital 3 times. (uncertain)
EDIT: NOTE: I had captured 10 of Sitting Bull's 15 cities and his capital twice before he capitulated. (And as I recall, I had to capture just over half of every civ's cities before they each capitulated.)

Also, I've never gotten an AI and his vassal to capitulate at the same time, is there some trick I'm missing?

Have such a commanding military lead that you're able to field two attack forces thus destroying both of them at the same time. ;)

If you raze most or all of what you capture, will that make capitulation less likely? By which I mean, do you have to "capture and hold" half the cities?

I also assume when you say "capture his capital 3 times," you mean 3 different cities.

Thanks for the response! I'm such a newbie at this game.

some leaders like Gandhi will capitulate easily. some like genghis you have to take them down to like one city and might as well just wipe them out. i'm sure there must be something in the xml on this.

I wish I knew why I was unable to get SB to capitulate in my game. It took forever to capture all those cities.
Did you take out Sulie? Since SB was a vassal himself, he cant capitulate until you make him a free state.

Oddly enough, I never touched Sulie, SB, or Jaoa. I managed a Domination without having a land based war of any kind, heh.

Yeah, I took out the Ottomans first, because they only had one city. I really couldn't believe SB would never capitulate, I almost thought I had run into a bug of some sort.

If I had seen that coming, I never would have gone for a conquest win. It was soooo tedious.

That's why I saved SB for last. ;)

By that time, I had him corned on three fronts -- two of them by massive city-squashing SoD's.

... there must be something in the xml on this.

I'm sure it's some kind of algorithm based on the BasePeaceWeight, AggressionLevel and MakePeaceRand (maybe others too).

I'm guessing only Solver, Bhruic and a few of the other CvGameCoreDLL developers have a clue where to start looking for that.

Well, trying to use my log is an exercise in frustration. I just do not have the patience, sorry. I will do the best I can to recall my game, though, it wasnt too complicated.

Forgive my hasty report here, as well. I really want to play, I have so many games half-done, and this one took forever to finish out.
Spoiler :
I started out switching to Music right away. I wanted the free GA for a 15 turn GA. I also started a few missionaries and settlers, as well as some military units, upgraded a couple Galleys, and whipped out the remaining Caravels to get the Harbormaster quest done. I took the +1 gold, though, a poor choice after seeing how powerful Nav I was for OTAK. Would have ended my game a LOT sooner, thats for sure.

I also planned to continue with rolo's idea of Steel off Lib. I also tried to get enough military over to the Big Island to take out the barb cities there. As I mentioned in my teaser, this ended up being a very strong move. Once I took Angle, and kept it, Louis DoWed on me the very next turn (he had a sole archer next to Angle). Little did he know I already had a pile of Galleons filled with Maces, and was just finishing up Chemistry. Within 10 turns or so, I upgraded a few Caravels to Frigates, and sent them over to bombard, while my Galleons rolled over to Paris. I took Paris with ease, and when moved my attack force to the next city, he capitulated.

My biggest mistake of this period was REXing too quickly. My economy tanked baddly, and I couldnt run enough specialists to maintain a decent tech rate (in my mind, anyway). I had 21 turns for Lib once I finished Chemistry. Ugh. But it wasnt too bad, I used the time to consolidate my Empire. I whipped and chopped my brains out, getting Markets and Courthouses up ASAP. I even started the Palace in Angle right away, and chose Hamburg for the FP. They finished within a turn or 2 of each other, and I was back up to a super strong tech rate. After Lib, I actually teched Divine Right, and build Versaille in Cologne and the Spiral Minaret in Berlin. Wow, those 2 wonders worked miracles.

I bee-lined Rifling after Nationalism, while building Cannons. During this time Sal built the AP, and I was made the Resident. I decided to go for an AP win, and actually had a couple votes for it, but I fell short on both, the 2nd by only 15 votes. I decided to hit Toku first, because of the strung-out nature of his empire, so I landed my SoD on his biggest land mass and took 4 cities real fast. None were Hindu, and I had missionaries standing by, I wanted the votes, but Toku threw a wrench into the works. I gave him peace, and he immediately spawned 2 new colonies, Hannibal and Wang. Neither had any Hindu cities, so my plan of a quick AP win was over.

At that point I just decided to start taking out empires. KK was next, and I took his original cities, and moved on to finish off TOku and his new vassels. Meanwhile, I kept spamming cities, getting closer and closer to the 58% I needed for Dom (I had the population number for over 50 turns, heh). Hannibal and Wang didnt offer much of a fight, even though they both had Samauri, LOL.

Not much else to say really. I just took cities, jacked the Culture up, built Theaters and such in the new cities for fast border pops, and finally got the win in 1884 (not 1891 as I thought). I have some screenies:

You can see from the mini-map where I had my land. Also attaching the last-turn save, in case anyone wants to open it up.

Hey guys,
I don't think I'm going to get to play this round before I head for vacation, sorry. I'm sure 4+ mop-up reports will be sufficient for the community though ;)
Looking forward to the next installment. I'm back mid-June.

Hello everyone, I'm late to this thread a bit I'd say :p.

Actually, Bleys requested that I pick up Rolo's save and try for an AP victory, since apparently this has become my signature victory type . I did just that, starting from his 1200 AD save (utterly shocked nobody had the AP by 1200 AD). Unfortunately, it didn't go the same as his game did (as you'll see), but I'm putting it up regardless to showcase this approach. I got overzealous with the SS's so I'll do a write up like I usually do:

Spoiler :
The game diverged from Bleys' early, and TBH, I wish it hadn't. If Sal had built the AP, it would have been simple: betray Sal, take the AP, and switch into another religion to get an AI to friendly. Spread that AI hinduism, and then just sent 1 missionary to civs w/o the religion as needed. But no, in MY game it HAD to be built by Portugal (before I could get it, believe me I tried), with both them and TOKU in Buddhism. That's ok, AP is still doable, it will just take a bit more effort:

I built UofSankore..."because I could". God, the position in rolo's save is so strong I laughed. The AI teched miserably in this game, and I had a runaway situation from the start. Decided to abuse it a bit.

Won liberalism...

I probably could have taken assembly line with it at the rate things were going . I settled for steel, realizing that grens/cannon would mow absolutely everything in this game down regardless, and wanting the AP win, not domination after all.

OK, with a force prepped, we go for Lisbon:

AP is in my hands now, sent up some more forces from Berlin to force Portugese capitulation. He converts to christianity...that's fine for now eventually he'll be hindu.

More Buddhist blood bathing:

AP interrupted after capturing this city. Ah yes, something else interesting occurred...France wanted to help make this game easier for me!

Never lifted a finger for that. Love strong power ratings! Of course I'll take the opportunity to switch him to hindu and make him a BFF. Yes, I said that.

Peace is for 10 turns only Toku. Die. Or at least vote for me . I'd bribe him to convert to hindu shortly also.

After vassalizing japan/portugal, the only civs without buddhism were Arabia and the Ottomans. Arabia was in theocracy, but even with Bhruic's latest patch there's only 02394857 workarounds for that:

This turned out to be the easiest in this game.

I could have spread buddha to the ottomans peacefully, but I felt vindictive:

.

This left me at war with SB, but so what? 2 turns after I wiped out the ottomans:

Info & Score

Like I said earlier, this would have been MUCH easier if I could have just flattened Sal and then switched to a different religion like confuc, forced Sal into that (after taking AP and vassaling him), and spreading hindu to anyone who still lacked it. Again, this might have required a suicide strike on toku or something, but that's honestly pretty easy. Declare, take the city, spread, take peace, gift back. It would have been a total joke if I had the save about 200 years earlier so I could build the AP in the religion I wanted (confuc, then wipe out KK :) ). Ah well, that's how things are sometimes.

Wow, cool TMIT. I never realized that trick about switching everyone to another religion. I thought you were referring to the hammer-bonus switcheroo, but that was cool.

So if I had just taken the AP from Sal when it was Hindu, I probably would have had it, eh, after switching to Confu and forcing Sal into Confu, so he wouldnt be eligible for the vote. I see it now . . . well done, indeed. Seriously, that is EXACTLY the kind of manipulation I was hoping you would do, so I could see it first-hand. I have read your reports in other series, but since they tend to differ so wildly from my own games, especially those PYL, I didnt "see" see it.

Outstanding mate. I promise to get the next PYL up soon for ya, LOL, I can tell your looking for stuff to do when you played this old MC next-day after I asked, heh.

God, OTAKUjbski, that's like the Jessica Alba of game reports. I love it.

Assuming that wasn't sarcasm ... What did you like most about it?

I haven't done any two reports the same way, because I'm still trying to feel out what works the best and is easiest (quickest) to churn out.

I'd really love to know what element(s) make it a keeper format so I can repeat them in later Reports.

That strat went way over my head. I thought you had to have the AP religion as your state religion in order to control the AP.

Once you actually own the AP, you are automatically eligible to be voted for as Resident or Diplo Leader. Thats the key. TM took the city with the AP, then forced everyone into Hinduism, so that no one but him would be eligible for the vote. As he did that, he spread the APs actual religion to each AI, either by missionary or outright gifting a city. Once all the AIs had the APs religion, it didnt matter who was what, the vote is still going to be done.

Now, I am not sure if there has to be at least one non-AP-owner in the APs actual religion to get a Diplo Victory vote, but even if there was another buddhist, since TM was Friendly with some AIs, and had vassals, it was no contest, he got the votes.

The opening with the bulletpoints - your goals. Then you went on to describe how you achieved the different goals. Very crisp and clear. Only thing I'd like is more pictures in the actual report and not as tags in the end.
