Monastery not working?

Somehow I managed to found Islam even though it seemed like the AI were rushing to get every religion possible. So, since there are still a few who don't have any religion, I decided I'd try to build some missionaries and convert them to mine so that I can collect some income, etc.

So I built a monastery and then build a missionary from that same city, but it took the missionary from the "3 national units left" for some reason - it didn't give it to me for "free" for building from the monastery.

I don't have scientific method yet, so the monastery shouldn't be obsolete... so why did it use up a "national unit" instead of just building it like a normal troop? Do I really only have 2 left to build now? If so, what did I do wrong - why can't I build unlimited with my monastery?

The limit of "3 National Units" is not a game-long limit. It means that you can only have 3 of those units "alive" at one time.

If you have 3 missionaries and use 1, you will have 2 remaining (ya rly!!!) and will be able to build 1 more.

Ah ok! I was worried I was only going to be able to build 3 total! That wouldn't be good haha

Also the obsolescence of the monasteries is just the research modifier and I think the culture modifier. I know for sure that you can still build missionaries out of them after Scientific Method.

They still produce culture after obsolescence. Sci Meth only kills the 10%:science: and you cannot build any NEW monasteries.

You can still build mishes in cities with monasteries built before Sci Meth too

Sci Meth also removes AP, UoS and Spiral bonuses from monasteries (which is wrong design IMO).

As opposed to cities with monasteries built after SciMeth? ;)

Oh yeah, SciMeth obsoletes the Apostolic Palace +1 :hammers: bonus, Uni of Sankore +1:science: bonus, and Spiral Minaret +1:gold: bonus too. Lets not forget that.

Ha...maybe I could have worded that better or prefaced it, but the point was playing off of what the OP said originally or implied. In other words, Sci Meth does not obsolete monasteries' ability to build mishes.

I feel like the good capn's role on this forum is to be a constant thorn in lymond's side... ;)

Sci Meth's obsoleting Monasteries is actually one of the most frustrating elements in the game for me. If you're playing a Pangaea map, where there are lots of religions floating around, you'll probably have 3, 4, maybe even 5 Monasteries in your science cities. That's a bonus of usually 40% but potentially 70% research that's magically disappearing. Combine that with fewer Great Scientists from the Great Library and Parthenon becoming obsolete (if you built them) and, ironically, Scientific Method becomes the only tech that has a detrimental impact on your research rate.

IMHO they should move the free GS from Physics to Sci Meth.
