I'm an average civIII player, but whenever I get to the mid-to late middle ages, I can't seem to get enough money, so I have to decrease my science spending, so I fall behind in techs. When i'm really far behind, the AIs declare war and their modern armors and tanks kill my riflemen and cavalry!

ANY TIPS FOR MAKING MONEY?

Build roads, and assign citizens to work road tiles.
Build marketplaces in reasonably uncorrupted cities, and banks later.
Get out of Despotism quickly; the consensus among players is Republic unless the game is very violent, in which case go to Monarchy.
Time your Golden Age for approximately the end of the landgrab phase, or somehwhat later, but preferably after you've revolted out of Despotism.

1: workers.
2: roads.
3: profit!

Markets and banks don't help with science, they only modify that portion of the commerce that goes to tax-income.
If you are a heavy researcher don't build banks, they just waste shields and upkeep cost.

Don't build city improvements everywhere, only when they add a real benefit. So only build barracks in those cities that will be producing units, and only build granaries in those cities that will be pumping workers and settlers.
Cities that build artillery-type units don't need barracks either.

With enough lux resources, you don't need temples/cathedrals/colloseums.
cities that are not bordering an enemy don't need defending, so that should safe you unit upkeep cost.

Thank all of you for your advice, I appreciate it! :)

You gain a heavy increase of profit if you slide the, uhh, slider all the way down to zero. Let's say you have the slider at science 50 and lux 0, and you are gaining 2. You put the slider to zero and gain 30. You lose a turn of research but you'll lose more anyway if you put the slider to 40 and leave it there. When I need money to upgrade knights to cav, I end up putting all science to zero and gaining 300 gpt. Then putting it back up after upgrades. I don't know how useful that is but I do it all the time.
