[R&F] Mongolia First Look

Well not quite as cool as Macedon and not quite as OP as Scythia as for as neverending military conquest goes, but it certainly fits the Mongol Horde theme alright. I wonder what the %chance of capture is on the cavalry ability, that could be a huge deal if it's relatively high. Oh and the combat bonus thing could actually stack up like crazy in theory with enough diplomatic visibility. Even at level one you'll have +3 on top of the regular +3 boost you always have with them; that's +6 already. Imagine if you're at like level three diplomatic visibility (not too hard) then that'll be +12. That's massive

Either way sounds like a pretty stong military civ (as it should be) and one that'll be pretty fun to play. Oh and I love Genghis' character design

They are not as good as Korea or The Netherlands IMO.

If you say so, I think they are going to be extremely powerful and going to be to Civ VI what Shaka is to Civ V. Their trade-routes lead to a combat modifier? Their Horsemen, Cavalry, Knights, Keshik and all else are naturally stronger than any other players, AND can capture other Cavalry units? They seem monstrous to me.

I think I found my R&F civ.

This civ is extremely OP! As if cavalry and heavy cav was not overpowered enough, his units are easily the best in the game now. No Scythia horse rush could easily counter this. He is an automatic Tier 1 civ. If he had came out in vanilla launch, he would have been banned in multiplayer, but I think there are enough strong civs for him to not get banned by some multiplayers. I don't know if he is stronger than Alexander or not, would need to try him first, but Domination is too strong in this game, for him to not be T1 as a civ. I think his only weakness will be that he does not have a very early unit, so if he can hold off a super early rush in the beginning of the game, he could wipe out the rest when he gets his Keshiks. Only a lack of oil would hurt his endgame, if he did not take enough land, to continue rolling the rest.

Nasty civ indeed.

Leader Ability: Mongol Horde. All cavalry units gain +3 to combat strength and have a chance to capture defeated enemy cavalry class units.
Civilization Ability: Örtoo. Starting a trade route immediately creates a trading post in the destination city. Receive an extra level of diplomatic visibility for possessing a trading post in any city of a civilization. All Mongolian units gain +3 combat strength for each level of diplomatic visibility over their opponent.
Unique Unit: Keshig. A ranged cavalry class unit with 40 ranged strength and 30 melee strength. Any unit in formation with it receives its movement speed. (Seemingly has a base movement speed of 5)
Unique Building: Ordu (Replaces Stable). Gives +1 movement to all cavalry class units trained in this city.

Abilities looks interesting. Basically, you get strong cavalry units against civs that you are trading with. It also looks like you will want to declare war against your friends since you will have higher diplo visibility with them. Cavalry will be very strong and fast.

Genghis was one of my favorite AI civs in Civ V, great to have him back. He was so easy to bribe into wars against my enemies :D

A while ago, I decided to eat something from the revealed civs each week and so far I've cooked Kimchi bokkeumbap and sampled some Dutch cheeses. Maybe I'll try Tsuivan this time.

Also, atomic era music leaked:

So Babylon is out of the running.

I like that diplomatic visibility increases unit strength. It totally fits Mongolia's style of sending in traders and spies to check out enemies in advance, and it gives you more reason to build spies.

Well, I think civs should try to close themselves off to Mongolia. Don't accept embassies, or anything that will raise diplo visibility. Focus on anti-cavalry units and city walls.

If Korea starts next to Mongolia, Korea loses (unless there's a closer target , of course).
Send a trade route to a foreign city: instant +3 strenght against them. Send a delegation or negotiate open borders: more strength against them (not sure how it exactly adds up.

Babylon city-state. I hope this doesn't make them unlikely to be included in the next expansion, but for now i think it's a good thing, since they weren't likely to be included anyway.

Also what's that other city-state to the south of Babylon. Is it Buenos Aires or an Inca city-state? It's Buenos Aires, okay.

I can’t wait to not only play as Mongolia, but to play against them as well!

I appreciate how they used Scythia to display the Mongol's cavalry buffs. Too many posters argued that two horse civs was one too many, but Mongol Horde shows how a Scythian player could easily lose to, and even strengthen, a Mongol player's army. Definitely need to be careful when using a cav strategy against Genghis.

On a sidenote, the new Mongol theme is awesome.

I like the new components of this civ. Genghis's ability to capture defeated cavalry is unique and has a lot of historical flavor, and the trade route/visibility bonus adds a novel way of exploiting those mechanics (I can see it causing problems with other civs being incentivized to DOW Mongolia on sight, though). On the other hand, adding all of this while keeping the Civ V Keshik more of less unchanged seems like it will be a huge balance issue. That UU was strong enough make Mongolia a top tier civ more or less singlehandedly, and now its actually paired with powerful/synergistic civ/leader abilities.

Yeah, if I'm playing as Mongolia, my dream is to have Scythia next door.

Side note: can you capture UU? Like, can I capture a Sumerian war cart? Or a Cossack? Because a Mongolian Cossack would be pretty sweet...
