What is the highest number of units you've put in *one* square? Mine is only around 30, I think.

Wow. I've maybe gotten some stacks up to 20 or so, but that's about it.

What kind of units did you have stacked?

My stacks are usually engineers building railroads and a fortress and cannon for attacking with riflemen for defense. I have had a few big stacks of caravans waiting for ships also.

I had some 30 units in the last Succession Game

(I had put the s/s in the SG thread for game purposes)

The most I think was arround 40

I usually never even have 30 units outside my cities at once!
my biggest stack (outside the cites is like 4 to 5.
Inside my cites mabey 9 or 10!

HAHAHAHAHA!! Mine was about 65, it was normandy (a fortress next to the sea), i moved them there as a landing force that was connected by rail to EVERY one of my enemy cities!

Do caravans count? Occasionally I'll play an OCC game where my science output is not where it should be, but my shield production is over fifty. So I'll be popping caravans/freights out every turn while I'm doing research, and I move them one square out of the city and fortify them. I've had 50-60-70 freights in one square doing that before.

Ummm.....riiight.....

I will almost never leaves troops out of cities. I've never stacked more than a few troops in one fort. If I was to be running an offensive against an enemy city, I'd be more apt to spread my forces to as many forts in the area as possible. This will help to distribute the enemies concentration. The huge, pile up of troops then blitzkrieg everything strategy bores me to death. It lacks creativity. It is sometimes the only alternative one might have, but if I can figure out a more inventive, crafty way to attack the enemy I will.

In any case, I made a short story long didn't I?

I've already talked about my biggest stacks--in the "What's the dumbest thing you've ever done in Civ?" thread...

I had a huge navy, including 10 or so battleships, 6 ot 7 transports full of tanks and spies, 4 carriers at double-capacity (bombers were taking turns landing, so half were always in the air), and twenty or so subs each with at least one nuke.

THey weren't all stacked on one tile, but I must have had at least 3 or 4 tiles with 30-plus units when the cruise missiles came, I'm sure. I do rember reading "46 units destroyed" at one point before I blacked out.

We'll, inside cities I've had well over 20 units stacked many times - usually involving an invasion army arriving via ships. Outside cities, my record may be the 15 Imperial Legion and 2 Siege Towers that I used to capture a Macedonian city in a Rome scenario. They all sat in a fortress until I was ready to attack.

I usually never stack units, especially outside of fortresses, but I once had a series of barbarians on this two square island, resulting in 60+ units per square, all going down at the hands of a cruise missile.

I usually have about 20-30 caravans/freight in a fortress close to my capital, but I think the real question is: what is the largest stack of units destroyed or lost in a single attack. I once destroyed 19 barbarians. Sometimes lost ~10 units through carelessness.

Greg.

One time I stacked about 30 Howitzers in a fortress. Once I moved them into action, it sure wiped the smile of the AI's face.

I also had four other stacks with 200+ food freight.

Once I took over a mongol city only to find I discovered their secret navy stacked in the 2-3 squares outside. I quickly moved a whole lot of mech inf there... and they killed them all, loosing 33 destroyers and 21 cruisers in the process. I checked the casualties. That was the biggest AI stack I've seen, especially considering they kept some of their ships and I was hunting down the submarines that escaped for a long time.

I'm not that much of a stacker. In most games I will have stacks of 10-12 once or twice in the game. I don't think I have ever gone higher than 20-25.

I don't like to put all my eggs in one basket so to speak. (see Bond above)

Andu, your Rome game amazes me! BTW, I enjoyed the elaborate website you made to go with it!

I've nudged 100 a couple times with freight. I normally sort my freight into "piles", and sometimes the "junk" pile gets high (salt, beads, hides, etc).

When I mix units (or freight) it is waaay to had to pick the specific unit I want then the pile gets bigger than about 9 or so. But if the pile is homogeneous, just peel the top units (like your food) off as needed.

I'm not much of a stacker. Heck, my transports don't even always leave port full! My biggest ever invasion stack was probably less than ten. (I'm a lover not a fighter.)

My biggest stacks are usually engineers building my transcontinental railroad - then again these stacks aren't large because they're leap frogging each other across the plains...

The Comp in my last WW2 game (im german, hes British) Stacked 75(!!!) Planes and ships next to my Battle Ship... Can you guess what happened boys and girls?

To bad I ended up loosing to Russia any way... (2192 Days of war)

In modern times when moving an invasion force accross an open ocean, I will stack them all in one ocean square along with several AEGIS cruisers for protection from all air attacks.

I will also stack with them several battleships to provide protection from a naval attack.

By stacking units in this manner, it allows you to pool the defensive value of your ships and it become very difficult for the AI to blow you out of the water before you make landfall. Even if they attack you with massive numbers of cruise missiles.

you do! dont you know that the AI needs only Rocketry and a city to produce 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 missles a turn <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">
