More "Ask Sid" Q&A

1991 Civilization (1991)
1996 Civilization II (1996)
2001 Civilization III (2001)
2005 Civilization IV (2005)

There's "roughly" an average of 4.666 years between a new civilization, so statistically it's time to get a new one :)

for that to work, it would have to have been announced long ago, sadly.

I want to see an expansion for Railroads! or a new version of Railroads! for PS3.

Im still enjoying civ4, but ofcourse I wouldnt mind a new civ, but i'm in no hurry. Besides that it would probably force me to buy a new pc....
A new alpha centauri would be cool too indeed. Oh well I just wait and see what happens. Aslong as they keep on making these games i'm satisfied :D

I dont want to sound tetchy, but how many times does this have to be repeated: Firaxis dont own the rights to SMAC anymore, so they arent going to be making it.

I guess there is no way Sid could ever get the rights back then is there.

Sid created that game. I think it is completely believable that he could require the game in the future. After all would you be as eager to get SMAC2 if Sid was not involved?

Sure that's not in the near term but completely possible if not likely.

Point is, its really, really unlikely to be the next game, so unlikely as to basically be dismissable. In economic times like this, the only title that makes sense is CivV

haha, acting like they don't know there are people waiting for a civ game, there's a huge market for that.

it's a marketing method to give impression that people are listened to, and when the time is right, sid, the knight on a white horse will ride from the sunrise and save us all by announcing a new game.

That's my guess too. Truth be told they started working on it is a basic way sometime between BTS and Colonization. Once Colonization was released they switched gears to focus on Civ 5. The thing could launch this year for all we know.

Personally I think sometime around the 4th of July we will have some good news. Maybe sooner.

How do you know that?

Not really. Like Civ 2, Alpha Centauri was a Brian Reynolds design. Sid's name is on it for marketing / creating civ 1

Is E3 over, and did Firaxis not present anything?

Yeah, E3 ended earlier this week. While Take-Two (i.e. 2K Games, 2K Play, 2K Sports, etc.) did present some games, none of them were Civilization-related.

I still anticipate some type of announcement this summer...

Ginger, wouldnt that be sort of unusual? I would have thought that if they were going to make an announcement, it would either be at E3 or not at all?

Maybe they didn't want to be overshadowed by some other announcement. I didn't pay any attention to E3. Was there any other major new game announcements?

As much as we love Civ it isn't exactly something that i would thing would gain major press. Seems to me like E3 is more for console gamers and 1st person shooter types. Civ could be lost in that crowd.

An announcement a week or month after the big show would garner more attention I think. Or maybe they just aren't ready and you are right there wont be an announcement at all anytime soon.

Well, when Colonization was announced last summer, it was about one week before E3. CivRev was announced roughly two weeks before E3. Some of the earliest info about Civ4 came out in December 2004.

It seems that Firaxis does not announce things entirely out of the blue during E3, though it does use the convention to occasionally provide more info. If history is any indication, it's that we need to expect the unexpected. ;)
