Perhaps, once you are 'fully back' :) , I could tempt you to make a Naval Trooper? (Civ3 lacks older amphibious Marine variants so bad)

Looks like nothing more than raiding parties, not true assault troops like the USMC.

@StormR. - Sp = ridiculous

@Wyrmshadow - This is a Navy trooper, not a marine in the sense of the field of action. I.e. these guys would be more like sailors armed with light infantry weapons, trained, yet not really be equipped for shore assault.

BTW. What is so ridiculous Well, that's the way ANY sailor looked (and still looks) like the only thing added is the helmet... a few changes could generate different nationalities.

as an ex US Marine, I don't really like the idea of being lumped in with idiots... err sailors with guns. Ultimately it is not the gun, but the operator of the gun that is dangerous. And sailors with guns are just cannon fodder. They have their jobs which they are very good at, but this ain't one of 'em.

This is merely a request for "Amphibious" units of the time (a time when the concept of an armed sailor towards a modern Marine was still developing). As such, neither WWII Germany nor the USSR (and most seafaring nations) did have any true Marine formations, yet had to rely on assault landing troops issued by the navy.

What about the Seabees? And the SEALs? And the US has started giving some sailors infantry training to perform security duties.

...The Seabees were a construction batallion, and the Seals didn;t come about till, later.

"don't hit a SeeBee. He may be your father"

"RUN!!!!! It's the Mexican Marines!!! Arrriba! Ayudame!!" ROFL

Seabees? Get real. Think construction crew with weird clothing.
Seals? How many in the world are there? Do our enemies fear them?
They are very few, and no for just that reason. They are not a fighting force but naval saboteurs with some considerable ability to penetrate enemy lines. I’ve worked a couple of Seals in my day. I respect what they do, but in an assault would much much rather have a company of US Marines at my back then a bunch of frogmen,
And, more to the point there is no military organization in the world trying to emulate the Seals as a subsitute for Marines. Elite forces from friendly nations around the world (Isreali, UK, etc) came and trained with us (the jarheads), why? Because they feared us. And, they were right to do so.

My Mil-hist prof (a very wise and learned man that also teaches at the Army War College) once described SEALs as Rambo, but not in any good way.

Yes, there's an OLD OLD unit by smoking mirror of a smg armed sailor that looks russian.

Prof. Linn! :goodjob:

we could certainly use a naval infantry sort. and nice pics W.i.n.t.e.r :D

TVA22 made a "Japanese Imperial Marines" unit Back In The Days (some 3-1/2 years ago). IMHO it's still a decent little unit (even though I "voted" for calling it by its more typical handle, "Special Naval Landing Force" or "SNLF").

Also, IIRC the Seals were formed by combining 2 different groups of special forces units - undersea demolition and scouting units.

One last point -- I don't think W.i.n.t.e.r's pic of German infantry in white are naval troops (the print is entitled "Wehrmacht Landungsmanover"); I'd also suspect they're in white because they're probably invading Norway.

Best,

Oz

Yeah, but those particular old units are... particularly ugly  I think there should be something a bit less dated hehe- and best covering more than one era...

Edit: The white one is the Summer uniform (and/or to be worn in South Sea waters). So that pic is probably somewhere in the mediterranean. (I am not sure but the vessel in the background could one of the scout cruisers or a larger DD) Perhaps a summerly landing in the Baltic, even?

 WHITE, in the summer, when even the Baltic and the Med are in bloom? Sheesh -- no wonder those guys lost the war. ;)
