Moscatnt. Unit creation and previews

well the white would blend in perfectly with greek island housing -

the only thing they'd have needed to do is to pull the blue neck tie over their head and make themselves small and squarish  lol- they seem to blend in nicely with that white sand dune- hey, how about the "white cliffs" of Dover (its all psycological warfare u see ;))

I just chatted with Mosca. He is on a 'long vacation' because of RL work. So don't expect anything anytime soon.

I asked him to clarify if he quit or just took a 'long' break.

He works what, 4 jobs? I'm not surprised he's taking a long break.
"3 important new commisions" his words.

And according to Bjorn, Poser is a giant time vaccum. Almost as bad as my battleships.

It depends on how you do it. I may have stumbled across an incredibly slow way. If you install too much stuff in it (or maybe it is if you use P6 instead of P5)... I would not compare Poser to your battleships. You do more to make a battleship than I suspect anyone has done for Poser. No disrespect to any of the just brilliant Poser units.
The Poser people almost always begin with a prebuilt model. They spend alot of time tweaking the textures, hunting down props, etc... But, the actual basic animations take alot less time to create... just horribly long to render.
If I were to build equal units in Poser and bryce, each designed to take advantage of the strengths of that particular toy and I could somehow find a way to squish down my need to try for perfection... I suspect that Bryce would take around 20-40% less time per unit. Mostly because of render times and the weirder problems that come with Poser... key framed the spear and had it move later on... the feet to the troll were locked to the ground, but still moved... but the numbers (xyz) said that they did not. But using Hikaro's system of measuring on the screen, I could see that they both moved quite alot too. Were as with Bryce, unless you make grouping mistakes and have animation on internal bits plus on the external ones... you can just chug along... and as slow as I thought Bryce was at rendering... poser makes it look quite snappy. Part of the problem with both tools, for me, is I use too many high quality textures, too much detailing work, bump maps on even the little things.... I "FEEL" (not science) that it makes a subtle difference in the quality of the unit.
If you focus squarely on unit creation, and are not distracted (as I am) by the "oooh shiney", Bryce is definately faster.

Bjorn, in my experience, Bryce, on average renders about 2x as fast as Poser 5 My latest Bryce creation, the Galbadian soldier would render 10 frames in the time it takes my Wireless broadband to load a webpage. Also, I've found that unless you're making a Chainmail texture for a charachters body, you really don't need that much detail textures for an object to look good, especially at civ scale. I've found that out with the last 5-10 poser units I've made.

i dunno, i've been using poser recently and i have to say, for me its quite quick. its as fast as bryce is and i'm on poser 6 and bryce 5..

Quinzy, it might be that your limited exposure to them has impact your take on this? I'm not advocating one or the other, but making units more or less the same way I find Bryce to be far more responsive, all around faster and certainly the quicker to render My experiance is not as varied in Poser as Hikaro, nor are my observations as far in the favor of Bryce's speed... but we've both rendered many 1000 frames in each and reached similar, if not identical, conclusions.

indo-arab swordsman...

edit: bjorn: i suppose so, if thats the majority vote. i dont have much gig of poser or bryce stuff anyways, so i'd say thats whats keeping it quick for me..

Hi,
I'm sorry for reopening this thread but I think that I have to came here to say goodbye. I've been thinking about doing more units, but now I know that it would be impossible. My RL's job is wonderfull and a real time eating one.
Doing civ3 units was wonderfull too, and the Civ3 comunity is a great one, thanks to everybody.
If someone wants to kow about my today works, please visit my personal blog (in spanish, but full of pics).
Un saludo y gracias.
Alejandro

Thanks MoscaTnT for the units you created for everyone here especially the Romero Zombie.

To be happy in your full time job is a real gift. I wish you all the best and a prosperous future!

Yes, thanks for your contributions, and even if you don't make any more units, at least try to drop by for a visit every so often...

Mosca, I'm glad that RL is going so well for you, and it's very wise to make the decision not to get too sucked into something like unit-making when it might impinge upon more fruitful activities, or when there are other avenues to put your talents into. The art in your blog looks fantastic. Your units are excellent and will certainly be used for a long time, so I hope perhaps you'll drop by now and again to see what new mods they've found their way into!
