Mosque and Pagodas

Are there some complicated mathematics regarding Mosques and Pagodas? The reason I ask this is because when I purchase them the happiness increase varies. I have sometimes built a Pagoda and no happiness increase occurs at all. Other times it will give only one (the same as the Mosque). I have also built a Mosque and no extra happiness occurs. But other times I get the two or one increase as expected. Could it be that the happiness isn't instantly one or two globally, but you get a certain amount toward an increase. I have waited for the end of turn too, just in case it hadn't registered yet.

How big are the cities? Buildings can only provide a total happiness as big as the total happiness of the city, so a city with a Pagoda, Circus and Colosseum needs to be pop 6 for all the happiness to register
 
Thankyou for the reply. I didn't know they worked the same way as the Circus and Colosseum regarding happiness. (I didn't understand the happiness limitation properly either, to be honest). I have now got the gist after finding a helpful article on the subject. I haven't checked yet, but you are almost certainly right. They were reasonably new cities I am sure. I now realise that if you already have a Circus, say, then the Pagoda or Mosque will need the population to rise to take effect due to the base unhappiness.

Not only do the religious buildings provide only Local City Happiness, all of the building-based and terrain-based pantheon and follower beliefs provide only Local City Happiness. So, Goddess of Love and Sacred Waters pantheons = local and Asceticism, Peace Gardens, and Religious Center follower beliefs = local.

The only religious beliefs that provide Global Happiness are the founder beliefs - Ceremonial Burial and Peace Loving.

Browd, so there are two kinds of happiness? So the only happiness (global) that ignores the base unhappiness is luxury resources and social policy benefits?
 
I believe (not 100% sure) wonders also give global happiness.

All buildings can give either local happiness, global happiness or both. Some wonders give global (NOTRE_DAME, EIFFEL_TOWER) whereas some give local (CHICHEN_ITZA, TAJ_MAHAL). All current standard buildings only give local happiness. No buildings currently give both.

I'm at the character limit in the overview article, but I've revised it to add the "Local" notation where relevant, and trimmed some words here and there to make it fit. There's no room for an explanation of Global vs. Local in the overview article, but it is described briefly in the other articles.
