Mitterrand supposedly said of German Reunification:

"I love Germany so much, I want there to be two of them."

What a dick.

I dare not even mention what Thatcher or TIME Magazine said!

What did they said? . .

Thatcher said of German reunification that the world should be cautious, as the Germans tend to dominate. (Enter vague reference to World War II, and the only thing Brits find "pride" in.)

As for TIME Magazine...

Should the world be worried? Look, we even put a picture of Goose-stepping Wehrmacht members on the top! (Enter another vague reference to World War II.) Naturally it is in the genes of the bloodthirsty Germans to start world wars.

I don't trust you Harvin87. I see you are from Germany. I bet you go on vacation with your fellow Germans to neighboring countries like France, Poland, and the Netherlands in giant ten-thousand man groups. Sometimes I bet you even "visit" other countries by parachuting in from the sky!

So gossip basically. (And how does this rank Mitterrand with the likes of Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot...?)

When I don't have facts, I use the next best thing; gossip and hearsay.

In Canada I have no doubt the most infamous person in history is Hitler.
When people speak of evil they think of Hitler, horrible dictators and such are compared to Hitler first.

I expect he is at or near the top of the pile in Europe, America, Australia, etc.. as well, just from what I have seen or heard about/from those places.

Elsewhere it would be very different. For example, in China, I doubt Hitler would come close, it would probably be someone more closely linked to Chinese history (perhaps Genghis Khan or some other conqueror or some brutal Emperor) with Hitler relatively low on the list.

In some African countries it may be a very recent brutal ruler or someone from colonial administrations.

There is just so much variance through different places that it is impossible to say one man for the world.

In the last century, it's kinda always been Germany vs the Rest. Austria wouldn't have DOWed Serbia hadn't Wilhelm promised his help.

I'm not calling Germans "disgusting warmongers" or anything, just pointing it out.

In this case "always" means "twice."

Yes but they were still very large and very affecting, post-war.

ADD ON:

Austria was comforted by German backing not because of Serbia, but because of Russia. And rightfully so, Austria was probably the only country in Europe more rotted out than Russia.
I never disagreed with you. I'm just saying that Germany had a big part in the start of WW1.

From the French perspective it was three times :)

I agree completely that the people who claimed that Germans are predisposed to attacking others is disgusting, but at least in the 19th and early 20th century Germany (and its Prussian forerunner) were highly militaristic, and generally opposed to the British and French, so that after WWII their reputation could be justified, especially from the view of people who had lost many friends and relatives during the wars.
But by 1989 I think it is just stupid, after 40 years allied to half of Germany and supporting its rebuilding, and economic union.

But this is going way off topic.

Neither half became a state again for ten years after WWII. I'd hardly call them "affecting."

Not in the 20th Century, which was the century in question. Unless you mean that silly debacle over Morocco.

Haha, yea . . thats what I do all the time!!! :-p

Meh, missed the 20th century, but it is an arbitrary dividing point.

There are many deserving people on this list. When we consider that infamous denotes one who is well remembered by many for some terrible deed(s) one name must be included. Jack the Ripper; we don't even know who he was. He committed a series of horrific murders in a single neighborhood during a period of about six months in 1888. Yet today you can go almost anywhere in the world and somebody will recognize the name.

Elsewhere it would be very different. For example, in China, I doubt Hitler would come close, it would probably be someone more closely linked to Chinese history (perhaps Genghis Khan or some other conqueror or some brutal Emperor) with Hitler relatively low on the list.

As the ancestor of the founder of the Yuan Dynasty, Genghis Khan is actually not that reviled in China, AFAIK. I would imagine people like Wang Jingwei, Matsui Iwane, Ishii Shiro or Yasuhiko Asaka would rank pretty high on the "most infamous" list.

Well, those anti-Japan thugs in China...

Frankly they have reasons.

If the Germans stopped invading people then perhaps we might all stop going on about it!
