Most talented allied commander in WWII

Indeed. And raiding Berlin at the height of the battle, inviting terror upon London, was a calculated risk that eventually paid big dividends. Just because the Luftwaffe made some mistakes, does not mean the RAF and other volunteer pilots were not stretched to the max, and had to meet this threat with the utmost skill and determination. Any comparison of the actual plane and pilot losses will show that Germany didn't lose this battle all by itself.

This question is moreso a philosophical one than anything. Is it more fitting to credit the skill of the winner, the faults of the loser, a combination of the two, or neither, for the result of a battle?

Yeah truly I dont have an answer for that. I think most times we interpret what the potential threat was, and acknowledge the victors based on the actual outcome, regardless of the blunders of the opposing side.

Essentially, it's subjective. Shouldn't be much of a surprise.
