OK... with the release of Civ V a little more than a month away, the excitement is surely building. That said, I recently recorded a show on the History Channel called the Art of War, but have not watched it yet. The reason, sometimes when I watch shows like that, it gets me in the mood to play Civ. So, I thought that I would hold on to it until the release date gets closer.

With that in mind, I started thinking about movies that also give me the same feeling. So, I though that I would pose the question here as we anticipate the next release of Civilization (9/21 is getting closer). What movies put you in the mood for Civ'n?

My short list (in no particular order):

  • 300 - I never really liked the style, but the movie is pretty good besides and can get me in a good civ'n mood
  • Rome (HBO/BBC series) - Not a movie, but a good mood setter nonetheless
  • Saving Private Ryan - WWII...
  • The Last Samurai - For obvious reasons
  • In Harms Way - A great, classic WWII flick
  • Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure - About half of the historical figures in the movie have been featured in Civ at some point. Genghis Kahn, Abe Lincoln, Napolean, Joan of Arc, Socrates... EXCELLENT!!!
Those are to name a few. I am sure if I went through my entire collection, I could find much more. Anyway, anyone got any to add?

thomas the tank engine.

jk, im always in the mood. i don't need to br civaroused by historical dramas.

What about when you are away from Civ and your mind is elsewhere? You may happen to catch a movie or TV show that puts you back in a "Civ State of Mind".

i get the urge to play but nothing really sets it off, i just suddenly start thinking about building an empire, then its off to play civ, see ya later boss, i dont care if you fire me

Honestly, when I read here, and look at pics of V, it's like Civ porn, and it gets me in the mood to play.

Part of my problem right now is that (though I am still a bit skeptical about Civ V) I usually find it hard to play previous games when a new one is coming out. At least of this type (with no continuity or story).

You, my friend, Win.

"Inglorious bastards".

No, just kidding. Anyway you put me in the mood to watch bill & teds excellent adventures :D

Edit: I just remembered another movie. But i can`t exactly remember it`s name. It was associated with Hitler`s downfall and there are numerous joke videos about it in youtube.

Here`s one on what would it look like if Hitler would be playing Civ IV http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUg3vJewyP0 .

Civ III http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4V_w7VWwoVM&feature=related .

It's called "Der Untergang" in German which means "Downfall".

I usually like to play civ after I watch a documentation. But movies like "Kingdom of Haven" and "The Last of the Mohicans" also get me ready to play civ.

I'm having the same exact issue and can no longer play Civ IV sadly. Despite loving it so much.

On-topic, nearly any movie/book/article/anything that's from a pre-19th Century time will get me in the mood to Civ. Having said that, I'm nearly always in the mood anyway (unless a new one's coming out...)

Some movies that haven't been mentioned:

Rob Roy (better than Braveheart...seriously).
A Man for All Seasons
The Count of Monte Cristo
Any adaptation of Robin Hood, including Men In Tights.
