Movies, Singles and Musicals

For the hit singles for instance you must build the Rock 'n Roll wonder. It will give you 5 hit singles (which you can trade with other civs just like luxuries), and they will provide a small amount of happiness.
The movies require the Hollywood wonder, the musicals require Broadway. They all have the same effect.

Yeah, they're not great. The main benefit is really the +50% culture in the cities in which they're built, but that's not usually particularly game-deciding either. It's nice to get some extra resources to gift away for a diplomacy victory though.

the number you get depends on map size as well. hubby was not pleased to find out on a tiny map that he got just one hit record for all that effort.

cities that have broadcast towers get +2 :) from each of those resources instead of just +1. best way to arrange that is of course to build the eiffel tower so that you don't need to build the pesky towers in all the cities. that even lets you skip researching mass media if you want to. but it leads to quite a lot of wonder building!

They are just an extra happiness resource, so they only provide one extra happiness to each of your cities. But, since you have an absolute monopoly on them, they can be quite lucrative.

For example, in one game, I got 7 singles and traded off six of them to the other civs for an average of about 8 gold per turn. I was making about 50 gpt extra just for building that one wonder. When I got movies, I tried the same thing. It wasn't quite as profitable (only 30 gpt) because I was already draining the other civs of all their extra cash. All that extra cash allowed me to keep my research high and most likely forced the AI to lower their research percentage.

maybe it's mean and greedy but ...

i check the trade screen every once in a while and renegotiate trades that i already have in place, if the AI has gotten richer in the meantime. if i'm selling him fur for 7 gpt and now he has 2 gpt for trade, i cancel that fur trade and start it up again for 9 gpt. that way i get more gold but he doesn't get a new happiness resource to help his people out. i do thing like trade them the "least useful" stuff (not rice, since they'll have granaries to make it count double everywhere, here i'll trade you pigs instead), stuff like that.

not that i'd encourage you to mean and stingy with your hit singles of course. :mischief:

That's not mean and greedy, it's called inflation.;) BTW I do the exact same thing.

i make arrogant demands for cash the turn before i DoW, so that i can upgrade my troops. better that i spend my victim's money than that they get to spend it, i figure. i was surprised to find out on these boards that not everybody had thought of doing that. is it extortion, or efficient budget planning?

I always do that :D I like to get every thing I can out of my victims :mischief:

They are great. The computers will trade tons of GPT for a single hit or movie or whatever.

It's also a smart way to play. The more resources you're selling to your opponents, the happier, healthier, and more competitive they are. One of my main reasons to go to war (like I need any) is to acquire resources for trading.

One other advantage of the three entertainment resources is that their benefit multiplier (the broadcast tower) comes very late in the game. So by, say, stopping your trade of gold to the AI and replacing it with a hit single, you'll probably drop his count of happy citizens in almost all of his cities by 1--because the AI probably already has the gold resource multiplier (a forge) in most cities, but probably doesn't have broadcast towers everywhere and won't for some time, unless that AI builds the Eiffel Tower.

They are just like resources. LOL I tried to add one of them to the map with worldbuilder once and it used the wheat graphics!

Lol, I tried that too (Along with my favorite, the Land Whale):) . Hmm. I wonder if you can "farm" a Hit Movie if you place it in your borders using Mapmaker.

sweet!!!!!! i'm playing a game right now, aiming for cultural victory, but i'm not allowed to run the culture slider above 20%. obviously it's taking me a while, and i didn't shut down research when i usually do. for once i actually did research all the way to those wonders. tonight i built rock and roll, and changed trades to hit singles. thanks for the idea :). i know they don't have broadcast towers, i have spies *giggle*.
