Moving to Omaha, Nebraska?!

Just found out my next assignment is going to be near Omaha, Nebraska. Never been to this part of the US. Considering I think the under 70F 'winters' of Okinawa or cold I guess this should be interesting! Does anyone live there or have visited there that can give me some info about the area?

I live 60 (80 perhaps) miles from there. Blazing cold winters and scorching hot summers. You'll probably wish you never moved to the midwest . Omaha is a big city though, 1 million people, so there's plenty of everything there.

Omaha has everything any big city has, just less of it.

Today our temperatures hit 70 degrees. Beautiful weather, but about 25 degrees above normal for this time of year. Summertime temps noramlly climb into the 90s to 100s, usually with 95% humidity, so you feel like you're in a sauna. This winter is over, but during the winter it is normal to see high temperatures that don't even get above zero.

Where exactly are you going? Offutt? USSSTRATCOM?

I am originally from Colorado and loved the mountains and consider myself to be in hell since moving to Omaha 11 years ago. The weather here is strange to say the least. Cold and wind from Canada in the winter and hot humid weather from the south in the summer. The terrain is flat and uninteresting but it doesn’t matter because the weather leaves you wanting to remain indoor most of the time anyway. Tax rates are outrageous because Nebraska is a fairly large state with a relatively small population. On the other hand, there is a pretty impressive Zoo here that is most likely considered on par with the world’s best. I am struggling to find good things to say about the area and I have possibly made Omaha sound worse than it is but in truth, I am currently focusing all my efforts on escaping.

OMG! How could I have forgotten to mention the zoo? World Class. That sums it up. It has an indoor jungle (the world's largest, IIRC), an indoor desert habitat (the "Desert Dome"), the worlds largest aquarium tunnel (walking through, watching sharks swim overhead!). It recently completed a major Gorilla exhibit, and is world-reknowned for its big-cat breeding program.

Stewie: sorry you don't like it here. I've been many places around the country, and around the world, and Omaha is at least as good as most places I've been. All that's missing is mountains and oceans.

My uncle lives there. My recommendation? Retire and stay on Okinawa. If that fails, put a gun to your head.

Another plus. You'll only be hours away from Kansas City! Home of the Chiefs and Royals! Omaha has a Royals AAA farm team as well.

Hope it isn't that bad, though I will sourly miss Okinawa. Can't believe I got to live in this paradise for 2 years. Highly recommend it!!!

No worries. I used to run in Kuwait at lunch when the temps were 130+. Of course, that was a while ago.

Yep, USSTRATCOM at Offutt AFB! Not sure of the job details yet as I just got an email from branch, but should know more in the next month. Not sure if this is a reward or a punishment for an Army guy. Branch actually gave me a 'choice', it was either there, DC or back in the box. I didn't want DC and my wife doesn't want me to actually volunteer to go in the box again, so Offutt seemed cool. Also, lots of AF guys here stated they loved Offutt, so I thought I'd give it a try. 12-14 hours from our parents homes and looks like 9-10 from good downhill skiing, so great midpoint.

Sound like we need to have a CFC get together when I get there if no has yet. And who needs amusement parks, I have CFC!
