I know this sounds stupid, but I'm new to this game
I can't move my units to the square adjacent to them, only to the ones diagonnaly (up, down, or side ways)

You know you can edit your post instead of double posting. And it should allow you to move to any of the eight squares unless you have the PC version. That I can't help you with.

Now I know what a mod feels like.

Are you using a laptop? Or are you just not using the numpad?
The Home (upper-left), Page Up (upper-right), End (lower-left) and Page Down (lower-right) will move you to adjacent squares.

Movement by mouse has to be turned on in the Game Options menu.

No it doesn't. With mouse movement turned on you get little arrows depending on what part of the square you're pointing at. Magic_gorter is referring to the "mouse shortcut" for the "Go To" function, which is something different.

If you are using a laptop which does not have a number pad, then you must press the Fn key first then the appropriate overlay key.

this is pretty dumb question but I know how to move wit the arrows but is theer any quick way of moving in the direction in between the arrows i.e. diagonally? I currently just click and drag.

You can use the numeric keypad (Num Lock should be off, I think). If you don't have a numpad (i.e. you're on a laptop), the Home, Page Up, End and Page Down keys should work.

Edit: After the thread merge this post looks awfully repetitive now... :hmm:

Yup, use numlock off. I use my right hand with middle finger on the bump on the "5" key, and fingers then push the keys very rapidly in proper sequence to move the unit like I want. When there is lag (e.g., windows makes a delay for a moment), I either stop or finish the sequence, then watch the unit catch up later. The keypad is an indispensible time saver for me, when lots of units are to be moved. In some cases, when I am sure of where the game's dateline is, I use GOTO (click and hold mouse on destination square), particularly with freight & roads/RRs and with ships.
