I've been playing MTW2 and it just seems to easy. I played almost none of RTW and nothing before that but even at very hard/ very hard I just seem to dominate the CPU. I think years of playing Civ have just left my city management skills to good for this game since I always seem to have a strong economy which allows huge armies. Add to that the fact that the CPU never seems to really throw everything at you and I just keep winning. Anyone else experiencing this?

It depends what faction do you play. I think everyone can create a good enough empire with Spain or HRE.

Well if you've mastered the higher levels of Civ,TW series will be a cakewalk for you. But it still is a nice franchise although it lacks the strategical depth of Civ.

I actually have found it much harder than RTW, mainly because the AI is much better at putting decent armies in the field, and for once they actually try flanking attacks. Also, I've found money much tighter than in previous games, where a good 10 provinces means nearly unlimited income.

It's not easy, really. It took my friend 16 turns to defeat Scotland (!)

.

Well, it took me 13 turns to defeat the English, as Scotland!

Game still suffers the same problems RTW did. AI's lack of an early expansion, complete lack of naval invasions, backstabbing you no matter what, fielding 14 peasant/milita with only 4 real units. 95% of the factions I play as on VH/VH I become #1 across the board by turn 50. The only time the game ever becomes a semblance of a challenge is if you're playing an Eastern faction and the Mongols just steam roll you with 1293892329 10 star Generals.

The other issue I have is that wars don't ever seem to end as once you have won a couple of battles your reputation is abysmal. I guess you could bribe them however even bitter enemies would probably sign occasional ceasefires.

The game needs civ style difficulty levels. There doesn't seem a huge difference between the levels, and some people suspect that VH is so buggy it's actually easier than normal.

Civ difficulties range from "easy enough for a 4 year old to win" to "virtually impossible for even the best players". The difference between say... prince and monarch, seems to be greater than the difference between the easiest and hardest.

The main fun I get from total war isn't winning the campaign as such.. it's when I get a battle I *know* I'll loose on auto-complete, so have to take control myself, pull of something daring and heroic, and hopefully win.
