I think Civ3 is likely to have 2 CDs (1 installation CD and 1 play CD). I say that because in Test of Time, Microrose could not fit all the files and movies on one CD.

What do you think?

Possibly. But there is also the possibility that they may decide to place some files on an internet site (graphics and sound). It's not unreasonable make this a web based situation, since the internet is the main reason for most people to have a computer these days anyway.

Then again, they may sell the game on one CD, and then offer the graphics and sound on a separate CD that you have to buy as well...sort of like giving you enough files to get the game going and if you have Civ II already, you can just play with the original Civ II graphics.

hm...there are a lot of possibilities here...maybe they will just super-compress the files and let them explode onto your hard drive.

I could live with civ II graphics. The graphics are not why I play Civ in the first place. Anything that keeps it playable on my current system is fine by me.<IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/smilies/cwm12.gif" border=0>

How come the Test of Time CD has only 380 MB on the cd if they couldn't fit the movies in?
(Test of time isn't that good. It doesn't even have an scenario editer).

I think the game would fit if they used high quality CD's (up to 850 MB).

Alhough I love internet I don't think that putting some files in internet is agood idea.

In first place you will need to have the phone line busy while you play, and this would mean that it would be hard to make a phone call.

In second place there are some counctries who have to pay the telephone conection by time, so it can become quite expensive.

In third place Internet is the slower PC device, so it would make it work slowly. At the end the computer would be downloading the same files again and again, so the pc wold keep it on the hard disk or ram, why don't to keep it the Rom?. Actual hard disk have enough space for several CD's.

And last, there are people who don't have internet. May be they want to play in a bus using a portable PC.

Certainly it is not a good idea

People tend to forget the actual size of software. A CD looks limited in size, but with modern sound technology and compression, everything can probably fit on the CD. Remember, most of the files can be put on the Harddrive since the harddrive is so much bigger these days, which means you can compress files to a size that would take too long to decompress while playing, but they would already be decompressed on the harddrive. Such file types common are Sound & Movies. I believe Microprose skipped the Wonder movies from ToT because I tried to burn ToT and wonder movies on the same CD and on the same folders as the MGE CD, and the movies crashed the computer...

I think DVD-ROMS will be much more accecible and widespread by the time civ3 comes out...

So they will have a DVD option and an 8CD option or something like that.

I personally cant wait for DVD disks... alll that data, the cinematics will be happy good.

And than there is the blue laser 50 layers high density CD-based media being worked on that adds up to.... you guessed it! 1 TERRABYTE

That seems so exessive - but than again, I remember the day when I thought Floppies were excessively huge (I had 64KB 3 inch disks)

hey, i agree with the dude about compression, but still. come one on a P 150, might be cheap for space.... but yeah, he could just go without videos completly.
]
oh yeah, thats bullfeathers aboujt DVDs whoever said it, they are 400bux here for a good one, and not many ppl are in too much of a hurry to get one...

I doubt Civ III would be playable on a machine under 300 Mhz. Here's why:
1. Space
2. Common with (lower) processors, 32MB > RAM, which means...yech
3. DVD is going to be the mainstream later
4. People will upgrade to DVD for a game like Civilization. DVD isn't too costly anymore, and DVD is more widespread.
5. Rewriteable CD? Change information on the CD itself for upgrades (And security checks)

Hey it's important to remember: civ is not about fancy gfx and movies its about playablilty. stuff dvd - you don't need all that space with modern compression technology - most games happily fit on a cd. civ should flow - unit animations etc are second to this.

Gfx is second to gameplay for sure, i mean... you can't marvel at your animated pikeman forever, and how many civ players actually see the wondermovie when they build the pyramid for the 11020349567334212 th time??? gfx is not what keeps civ going, it is the gameplay! but of course it wouldn't hurt if the gfx was fine...

One thing i really really miss in civ 2...
Is a better view of my cities... It seems to me, that no matter how big my city gets, it still looks like tiny dullville. C'mon... I wanna see skyline like manhattan, i want my busy capitol to look like something

Well,

I think you are all over estimating what will happen with Civ III. I seriously doubt it will be on DVD in the first place...Firaxis is not going to force millions of Civ players to upgrade...

My comments about having some of the data web based was meant to be as an option, not a requirement to play the game. It's more likely to be something "market" based. It wouldn't make sense to make a game unavailable to the players...that's simply not going to happen.

It will however, be expensive; so count on that. Civ III is getting hype for one reason and one reason only...for you to get excited enough to dig deep into the bowels of your pink little piggy bank and throw those green backs onto the counter--preferably all of them.

There will be awesome graphics, data compression and stuff on a website and maybe even more CD's to buy--and I will place a bet with anyone who wants to take it, because that's the way the world works (sorry to say). I'm saving bottles and cans even as we speak on this subject.

I have the feeling that the sale of CDR's and blank cd's will go up when Civ III comes out.

Civilization III - The number one game in the world!

I believe it's called irrigation, Vlad. You know, one of the jobs settlers can do.

Tech support, thanks for holding 30 minutes, what's your stupid freekin question and/or what did you screw up this time?

But they have it from the beginning when there isn't irrigation. The city view screen is only a few megabytes, and it can fit on a CD easily as now Cd's can go up to 850 Megs. Civ2 only took up 350 megs.
