If you're not interested in reading my vent (don't blame you), skip to the last paragraph:

Hello, fellow Civilization fanatics.

First I must apologize. I did not lurk before I posted. I did not read up perhaps as much as I could. However, I'm currently in the middle of a multiplayer game which I had spent about a month organizing and I needed to vent.

I've been playing since Civilization 3 when I was young(perhaps not as hardcore as many on this forum) but I've been addicted ever since that day. I have only ever, until now, played the Single Player mode and enjoyed it thoroughly.

Now, times have changed and I've grown older, and now I and all my friends have jobs and the times we can play together are limited. We spent a month trying to figure out a weekly time when we could play some of our favorite game. Multiplayer appealed to us in a big way.

Now, in Civilization 5, we finally are making our dream come true. And our dream is quickly becoming a nightmare.

Please, for the love of God, tell me that there is a patch, or a mod, that makes the multiplayer actually playable. Combat animations? Not being dropped every 5 turns in the late game? Is any of this possible?

TLDR; What can I do to make multiplayer less buggy and more enjoyable?

If I'm not mistaken, you can turn off combat animations when setting up the game, no? As for the issue of getting dropped in late game, I think I've seen it suggested in other threads to have everyone play in DX9 mode and to make sure you're on each others' steam friends list so you can rejoin games easily.

This is advice from someone who's never played civ5 mp, so don't think I'll be able to help you much more than that.

In my last like 100 mp games I havent been droped out of game a single time apart when I lost internet connection totaly.
Playing in DX11.

Play without AI, CS and barbs helps a lot vs the "between turn lag".

So with all of you having decent PCs, stable internet and appropriate settings - nothing should stop the fun.
Combat animation are off in default for a good reason - U REALLY want wait 10x 10 sec if you fight each other with 5-10 units?

We'll play without AI or CS next time. We definitely all have good computers and stable internet, we'll all turn the settings down though and maybe even play on DX9.

As for combat animations, it just makes the game more fun to watch from every players perspective, but it's not as big a deal as being dropped and lagging out once we get to renaissance.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

I assume the reason I've seen the suggestion for using DX9 is if anyone's game is actually crashing. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by being dropped but if it's nothing to do with a crash the DX9 thing probably makes no difference.
