My son and I have played multiplayer random map since Civ 2. We play coop and our favorite used to be Civ V, large random map (lakes or continents), emperor level, 2 versus 4 AI. The after game replay showed the fairly equal starting positions for all 6 civs. In Civ VI, I have seen Gilgamesh start with his capitol on the last hex edge of an inland sea map. Needless to say he (AI) never had a chance with only half the normal hexes available.
While the random maps in Civ VI are pretty good, there are some really bad starts (yes, I expect a certain amount) and I wonder if the same model for map generation was ported over from Civ V ?

Its much worse than Civ V right now. We can only cross our fingers that Firaxis are working on this. In the interim myself and others are designing maps currently.

If you want really fair starts then you have to try hard coded maps like snowflake and clover leaf. Random script maps can be unbalanced, though Pangea and fractal are better than inland sea, for some reason they changed inland sea from Civ5 to Civ6 so that the corners don't get enough land. So its not played at all in MP right now.
