I have just got a second hand 30GB Video Ipod (5th Gen)

It is already loaded with lots of music..

My computer is so old, I wouldnt be able to move all this music onto it (its a crappy old 10gb or something!!!)

Now i've had Itunes installed for a good while and already have various podcasts and songs downloaded.

What happens if I press the sync button?

Will the Ipod loose everything and just have what I had on my computer?
Or will everything go tits up as my computer fails to hold the Ipods music collection?

How do I move stuff onto my Ipod?

Finally, the Ipod is named "Dan's Ipod" or something.. due to it being second hand.. is it possible to change this?

instructions are doubleplusgood...I think there must be a pdf somewhere online. I wouldn't know, I don't like Apple.

I got just the iPod. No box, charger anything. It was probably dodge but I don't care TBH.

I HATE Apple, and the iPod, but in the end, you have to accept it does actually do everything you could want, better than the majority of the competition.

Sure the first generations were crap, but with each generation they improved.

I got it to have music when I went jogging.

Well, you're gonna need a charger right quick, and I was speculating that you might be able to find iPod instructions online in a pdf or something.

I do understand the necessary evil, but for now I'm willing to suffer with my 256k Sansa.

I've borrowed my flatmates USB connector/charger thingy..
Thats how i've got this far...
(another is in the post from eBay)

When you plug it in with iTunes it should ask you whether or not you want to replace what's on your current iPod with the library you're connected to.

Moving stuff onto it is easy; you can have it set to auto update by loading whatever is new onto it, or you can turn that off and manually choose.

I can't remember where to change the name, but I have to imagine that you can.

How do I know when it is fully charged?

Just FYI: If your iPod was loaded with the music when you bought it used, it's illegal to keep it. But if you're keeping it anyway, in the settings for your iPod, you can select to choose songs on your iPod manually and then use click-and-drag within iTunes to move the songs from your music library to your iPod. This won't erase the other songs on your iPod.

I imagine it is.. but why?

That person paid to download and own a copy of that song.. akin to selling second hand CD's, why can't he sell his MP3's ?

Because he can still have the CDs or original MP3 files at home, and thus two people own the music while it has only been paid for once. Likewise, it's illegal to sell a CD second hand while keeping a copy for yourself.

If he sold you the songs and erased them from his own HD and threw away the CDs, it might be legal; it probably still isn't, though. I can't really explain why it would be illegal in this case, though I imagine it's something about that you can't sell a copy of a piece of music, but only the actual recording you bought (the CD). Those record companies interpret the laws in strange ways anyway, one of them even said that it was illegal to make a copy of a CD, even if it was for your own private use (don't think they could use that in court, though).

All sorted now thanks. :)
