MY Add a Civ Tutorial

The TXT_KEY_s are just references to the real text in one of the files in XML\Text.

For example, when you look at XML\Text\GameTextInfos_Cities.xml, the first entry is

PHP:
<TEXT>
		<Tag>TXT_KEY_CITY_NAME_WASHINGTON</Tag>
		<English>Washington</English>
		<French>
			<Text>Washington</Text>
			<Gender>Male</Gender>
			<Plural>0</Plural>
		</French>
		<German>
			<Text>Washington</Text>
			<Gender>Male</Gender>
			<Plural>0</Plural>
		</German>
		<Italian>
			<Text>Washington</Text>
			<Gender>Female</Gender>
			<Plural>0</Plural>
		</Italian>
		<Spanish>
			<Text>Washington</Text>
			<Gender>Female</Gender>
			<Plural>0</Plural>
		</Spanish>
	</TEXT>

You have to do the same thing with all your text.

So far, I've managed to get my Civ/Leader to appear in the Civilopedia, along with the UU and UB. Edited the descriptions to my liking and then I checked to see that name and pictures in Civilopedia all match up and look nice.

Here is where the problem is found: I run an advanced start game to see if I can play my custom civ with no crashes. Game start without incident so I proceed to place my cities/improvements/units as per the advanced start. After doing so, I begin the game and play. Everything is fine...until I attempt to build my unique unit and my unique building. The game crashes right after I click on the button to build them and the button selection sound file plays. This really stumped me since in the advanced start I have already placed both my unique unit and building onto the map and both of them appeared fine on the game screen. I've checked all related art and xml files for any tags I've misspelled but it all looks fine (remember, everything appears fine in Civilopedia).

Also, if this helps, I've actually duplicated and renamed the NextWar Mod to use as the test bed for this new civ.

it gives me a tag leader_myleadersname in info class was incorrect
curent xml file is Civilizations/CIV4CivilizationInfos.xml

ok i fixed that one now i get a
failedloading xml file xml\textgametextinfos_myciv.xml
[.\FXml.cpp:133] error parsing XMLfile-
file xml\textgametextinfos_myciv.xml
reasion invalid at the toplevel of the document
line 1,1
surce (theres a bunch of gobldygook here like an i with two dots >> only smaller and an upsidown ?) <text>

If this file is just a copy of another text file from civ (it is, right?), then the structure itself should be okay.
Then there is the question what programm did you use to edit the file?
It could have screwed the file up.
Use Wordpad or Notepad/++, not Word or so.

i got it off this site and i used notepad its saved as a .xml file and it gives me that message

I meant you should upload the file ;).
Can't see really a problem (besides the funny english text :D).
Maybe change the encoding to ISO-8859-1 instead of UTF-8, but i guess it will not do anything.

I had this problem somewhen myself, but can't remember the solution :think:.

nope that didnt work mayby post a working civ info
is it mayby because i am loading it as a mod
please help me
what are all the files i need, are they the ones it tells me to get on this tutorial, or are there more

nope that didnt work

Still the same error, i guess?

mayby post a working civ info

The text files in the text folder are all the same.
Just take another one and past the TXT_KEYs in it.

is it mayby because i am loading it as a mod

:confused: what else should you do with it?

what are all the files i need are they the ones it tells me to get or are there more

Please put some dots and commas in this sentence, i can't understand it in this form.

what are some good decent (and affordable) basic art programs... for 2D art? (for creating basic flag art, for instance) ?

You can use DXTBmp, which will allow you to save the files in the needed format (.dds).

For the art itself...it depends on what you mean with "basic art".
I just do resizing, cutting and sometimes i change the colors of images, this can already be done with normal paint. For advanced things paint.net is a very good programing, and i use IrfanView as image viewer and for resizing/cutting.

ok just to make sure its not my civ names or somethin
allcaps for the name is ok right?

Thank you for the suggestions all! WHEW. Put a simple icon on a flag... took longer than I expected... add a few odd units and give technobable... easy :)- I guess we all have our strengths. Mine sure aint litle flag icons.

It just needs some experience ;).
You'll get better after some time.

ok just to make sure its not my civ names or somethin

Even not this ;).
Just not the same name like an already existing file.

allcaps for the name is ok right?

Shouldn't make a difference :yup:.
