Two of my Hindu cities have been converted to Judaism. I assume their was a missionary involved.

Really, what's the impact? Should I care?

And if someone has 'missionary' bombed one of my cities, is there any way to get it back?

Judaism doesn´t take away something from your cities, it just adds to them.
If your city has hindus in them it´s still the case, but now you also have believers in juadism there, allowing you to build jewish temples and monasteries (as long as you have the necessary tech)
The only drawback is that the founder of judaism is able to observe the city without needing one of his units to be stationed there (and therefore without needing an open borders treaty) as long as he has judaism as state religion and that his jewish holy city gets one gold for every city that has the jewish faith (as long as he was able to get a great prophet and build a holy shrine for judaism)

Are you playing a mod? Cities can't actually convert in Civ4 or WL. Either your city had no religion and they spread Judaism, or your city now has both Hinduism and Judaism as religions. There's no way to remove a religion, but the only downside to having an extra religion is that whoever has the holy city for it can see those cities if it's his state religion.

I tend to regard this as a plus in many ways.

  • First off, you can now build more monasteries and temples for more research and happiness, respectively.
  • If and when you change civics to Free Religion, these cities will get a happiness bonus from the additional religion present.
  • Once that religion's monastery is built, you can spread the religion yourself to earn these benefits in other cities.
  • If you're playing for a cultural win, getting another religion in your civ courtesy of the AI plays right into your plans.
  • So the civ with the holy city for that religion, if it's the state religion, can see your city's surroundings and units. Put a few extra, modern, promoted units in there to make that civ think you're even stronger and a less inviting target. Or if you want that civ to come after you, drain the city of all but a few outdated defenders. In other words, if you know you're being spied upon, use the opportunity for disinformation.

The only real downside is a competing civ is getting 1 more GPT from you, if they have the shrine. It's not a big downside compared to all the positives listed above, though. And there are many ways to get that gold back from the AI. But that's a whole other topic...

does the AI really decides to atack or not on the base of what he sees? I allways thought he was based on the miltary strenght rank...

Yes, the AI bases some of its decisions on what units it can see. Generally if you're ahead in power and not in a war it won't attack no matter what, but if you're weaker in power or involved in a war it takes into account how many units it can see. Parading units near a border may stave off war, though I don't usually mess around with it.

The AI seems to decide whether to wage war against you based on your overall strength, but it makes tactical decisions on what it can actually see. If his religion highlights that you have a poorly defended city near the coast you can be sure it will try a surprise coastal invasion.

Just another thing.

Turn on "show friendly moves" and you'll be able to see any missionaries in your territory. The AI use them a lot, but you never see them if you don't have this option switched on.

2 other negative points from getting rival AI's religion:

1) Attack a civ with that religion being the state religion causes extra unhapiness
2) They can spy your city.

However, I would throw a festival every time a missionary enters my city...
