Hi everyone,

How do you play shorter games of civ4?
My games take forever (25+ hours) even when I play on the quickest speed.

I've heard people talking about playing games in 2-5 hours...

How is that possible? ( I would like to do that)

You must be a micromanagement freak (like me)! :cringe:

Some ideas:
1)Play on a small map
2)Lower the difficulty (perhaps)
3)Play aggressively towards a specific victory condition

Putting all that together, it's possible to achieve very early win times (and short games) if you go for a conquest or domination victory. And if you find yourself slowed down by too many cities, plan to raze any that won't help you in the short term.

Win before 1800 AD. If you don't, I understand why you think the game lasts too long.
To win earlier:
-Smaller map
-Lower difficulty
-Domination and conquest usually are faster than science, culture and diplo

So basically what TWTA already has said ;)

Use that guide I wrote a long time back. The main thing is to focus on playing more quickly and then to correct areas where you are using a lot of time without advancing the game...especially if said areas are not contributing much or at all to your actual winning positions.

Turn the graphics settings to low. Especially on big maps, they take a lot of time to render.

Also turn off Show Friendly Moves. It takes a long time to watch all the AIs that you know who are not enemies move all their units around.

You'll have to learn to use hotkeys.

If you don't want to actually get better, try to snag the AP and spread it to one of each rival's cities.

That can make the early game last a lot longer. (the unit delay rule will make the first 50 turns take twice as long)

Not watching every single battle between units and check quick offense at least in option table.

Isn't that the default?

In turn timed multiplayer yes. Otherwise, AFAIK SP games are sequential and so are formats like PBEM and some pitboss.

It can be a REAL problem on blazing timer though, because you literally can't give commands at crucial times but the game insists on prompting you to do so such that it's difficult to economize orders given.

Good to know. Thx.

Set options to quick combat

Set options to quick combat

Make sure to enable Quick Moves as well, it saves a ton of animation time.

I'm so used to the option that I almost didn't think of it.

I think the following setting are best to get the most fun in the least time:

Map size: duel.
Map type: Pangea.
Players: 18.
Difficulty level: Immortal.
Speed: Quick.

Diplomatic victory could be achieved within 2-3 hours.
Space race will take another hour or two.

Never attempted Domination/Conquest victories with these settings...
