Okay although I enjoy Red Alert II and Starcraft, I inevitably feel the need for a more realistic RTS game.

I want the ability to set up real ambushes. Although Lurkers, Dark templars, and wraiths let you do this in starcraft, and mirage tank let you do this in Red Alert, it is not nearly enough.I am talking about surrounding an enemy and suddenly springing and destroying the enemy without many casualties. The ability to set fire to forests to burn enemies or drown them by setting floods would be great.

I want the ability to combine weapons like making fire-arrows.

These would be awesome in an RTS game.

Check out Arcade Portal and

check out the warhammer computer games. i think theyre realtime. i havent played them, but i imagine theyre good. shadow of the horned rat is one(the newest), i think. or, check out age o empires. its a pretty cool game. dont like warmachines or priests, though. they ruin the game.

Off course what you said would be great but sadly ambush tactics are really reduced to fps games especially thief-esque games. Of couse you can really on fog of war to sneakly build towers and castles next to the enemy base in Age of empires.
Its also possible to lure armies into traps and siege onagers can knock down trees.

or, you can even do this with warcraft: make your own map/scenarios. par exampla: have that blue circle thing in one corner, leave out warmachines, and put the guys who need to get there in another corner. no villages/villagers, just about 50 guys on each side. that would be even better in aoe, because of better and more troop types. and you could use the 5 treasure thingies for the victory. just make sure the attackers outnumber the defenders, so the defenders cant kill all attackers.
