Just joined and I wanted to say a big thankyoooo to everyone here! Been reading forums for a while now, and finally achived my first Regent win due in no small part to all your excellent tips and strategies :)

No big thing for most of you but 1 very big milestone for me :)

(Conquest win 950BC as the Persians)

So Hi and a big thanks to you all

Wellcome to CFC!

Conquest win in the BCs on regent? Small or Tiny Pangaea, by any chance? (Not to belittle your achievement in any way, but those maps rather lend themselves to early conquests - if it was a huge archipelago with max civs I'll be really impressed.)

probably a small or even tiny pangea with two or three opponents. but it is cool. way to go, mr. benn. :)

Oopsy, sorry mod :) and ta for not deleting

Was a standard pangea with only 3 other civs ;) but im happy :)

This forum really helps... perhaps I will try my next non-Conquest game as EMPEROR...

The only problem is, I play rather long games, HUGE, all Civs random, 70% continental, 4 mio years and normal..., well, everything else middle setting.

Still had to fight really hard for a histographic win in my latest normal Civ Monarch game however. But I think I have learned a lot here, got some new ideas and could identify my main weaknesses.

BTW, MrBenn, try the Celts. The Gallic Swordsman is a true Highlanders / Scotsmans dream unit. :)

Hey, even BamSpeedy and SirPleb had their first Regent win at some point (umm, tell me that they didn't just start Civilization by winning at Monarch, please?) - Congrats, MrBenn! :goodjob:

MrBenn,

Way to go. I've been playing at regent for a while as well and I know how hard it is.

For everyone else...

Is winning at Regent generally considered hard? What level do most reasonably experienced players play at? I played civ 3 a long time ago and have been playing at regent ever since returning. Is regent considered a difficult level to be playing at? I have found it frustrating, but I didn't want to turn the difficulty level down because regent seems like middle level of difficulty.

It seems to me that most good players consider Regent very easy. I can't really comment because I haven't been up to Monarch yet to compare.

I did check out a bunch of Monarch SG's. To my suprise, they seemed to follow the play pattern that I already do.... Hmmm...

The only thing I really noticed was that the AI seemed more aggressive and the human players took their time in city location and trades.

Regent *is* the "Middle Ground" - the AI gets neither bonuses nor handicaps.

I would venture to guess that the hypothetical *average* player plays Regent/Monarch. "Good" players play on Monarch/Emperor. The really committed types tend to play Emperor/Deity. (Maybe they *should* be committed! )

FWIW: I play Regent, and occasionally dabble at Monarch. ;)

I guess that's why I like Regent - all's fair all around. But, I guess other players would say that a human should always be better than the AI, thus, if you can't win at Regent or below, a machine is better than you! :)

Please everyone, don't go nuts about the last sentence above - just a joke. I've seen numerous threads on AI and realize that as people improve playing the game, they need competition to keep it interesting.

I want to paly diety but I have a bad temper, all you will here me say is beep beep beep.......beep beep beep, because the AI will build the wonders in a few turns. I also noticed that you get really crappy land on the more skilled oriented levels, I cant operate with just one dye resource completly surrounded by jungle. Monarch offers me a good game, maybe ill try emporer.
