Hello, Sir!
How do I get out of this mess? I can't play Smash Bros. with faulty controllers!

yeah, you gotta specify so we can help.

Ok, I'm going to take a wild guess and say something is wrong with the joysticks. I'm in a helpful mood, so I got a couple things you can try. First off when playing push X, Y, and Start together and hold for 3 seconds to recalibrate the controller. If that doesn't work they might need cleaning. You see, a lot of dirt can get down underneath there and make the joystick and buttons stick. I usually give my controllers a good cleaning every 6 months which usually helps performance.

Here's what Nintendo suggests:

Try the following cleaning procedures:

  1. Unplug the Controller from the Control Deck.
  2. Get a clean toothbrush (no toothpaste) and a cup of warm tap water (not too hot). Do NOT pour or submerge the Controller in any type of liquid.
  3. Slightly dip the toothbrush in the water (the toothbrush should not be dripping wet) and scrub the area of the Controller around the buttons and control stick.
  4. Work the bristles down around the sides of the buttons and the control stick.
  5. After cleaning the Controller, dry it off with a paper towel.
  6. Let the Controller air dry for a couple of hours.
  7. Test the Controller for proper response.

If that doesn't help, the joysticks are probably loose from overuse. I've gone through a few controllers myself and have noticed that the GCN joysticks tend to wear out after a while, especially if you're playing a lot of joystick intensive games like Super Smash Bros. The best option at this point would be to get a new controller.

Hopefully, I hit the nail on the head. :hammer:

Okay, as far as Smash Bros. goes, one of the controllers doesn't allow a second jump (or sometimes any jump). The other one I have fails to allow characters to run. One of them keeps going up and down without warning in the menu. And one of them keeps moving my character forward in other games (I saw this while playing Super Mario Sunshine).

And in case you're wondering why I want to play SMS, it's because it's widely considered to be one of the GCN's best games, and I want to finish at least ONE of the GCN's best. Wind Waker might be next once I find a copy.

When you start up your gamecube, make sure you aren't pushing the joysticks in any direction. That makes the neutral all messed up.

You named the thread: My GCN controlers are faulty. Now it's a Wii. Brilliant.

I have this perverse fascination about a tank going over his head, crushing his puny skull and his underdeveloped brain being squished under it's massive threads.

Threads? I think you mean treads, but it works here anyway.

No, what I'm saying is that I'm using GCN controllers ON a Wii!

Re-calibrate it. Press X, Y, and Start at the same time.

Also, the best Gamecube games are not what the populace decides, it's what YOU decide. You might like an obscure game that 90% of the world has ever heard of.

Yeah, it's just that I don't feel good when I'm playing something like that.

Personally, anything over an 80% will do.

You are a sad, sad little man.

Oh yeah, it was #24 on Gamespy's Most Overrated Games List!
