My idea to protect Darfur:

What do you think of that idea?

I was thinking to protect the people of Darfur we should do this: Build a fence! It would be coverd in mesh, 5m high, 3m into the ground to prevent tunneling, and have razor wire at the top. It would completly block off Darfur from the rest of Sudan. It would also be electrified, that would be simple to do because in the desert there's no shortage of solar power!

Of course, some of the bad guys would be fenced in rather than fenced out, well, I assume lots of them willl die becuase they can't go back for supplies, but just to be safe we could send in a fleet of helecopters, each carrying a couple of snipers to keep things secure.

We should also probably set up refuge camps. Oh, and keep in mind, the army of Sudan is very primitive, it doesn't take much to stop them.

If you wish to stop genocide, fences and stand off solutions don't really cut it compared to boots on the ground getting up close and personal with the evil doers. And killing them.

Yeah but it's electrified;) !

 "Wipe out Genocide!"

Yes, just like the French fence near the Algerian border, which was tactically successful, but certainly not on strategic grounds.

It has worked before, as you well know. Nothing spoils the day of someone intent on killing their neighbour because of their race or creed than being swiftly separated into their component parts courtesy of a 105mm round. Guaranteed to prevent recidivism.

Practical problem: The Sudanese army may be primitive, I don't know, but I can't imagine a fence stopping an army.

Also it's a short term solution. For how long would this be sustainable?

Solar power is out of the question. They tried this years ago, getting solar power in the desert. Their huge solar array got fried in a few days due to sand getting in everything. It tore up the supersensitive collectors like you wouldn't believe.
Why don't we run it on the a big fire, from the burning bodies of 'former' genocidals? A problem, and a solution!

Let's send in the Euro's! Then we can watch the mighty French and Luxembourgian militaries slug it out with guys on back of pick-ups with .50 cals bolted into the bed. We can watch videos of Frenchmen fleeing in mass too!!

Hah, American phallus waving is funny...not.:mischief:

"Going back for supplies"

They can just pillage and get their supplies from the Dafur population. Also while you are having the engineering corps or whomever you wish to build this, just have troops their to protect the people. The fence would need to be continually upkeeped.

Fences don't "protect" so much as they help capture your opponents. You will still need troops to patrol the wall to prevent well armed militants from just exploding the wall open with an RPG or what have you.

Oh no, I agree with Darkshade, what is the world coming to.

Some major (which almost implies Western) power will have to decide that stopping genocide is worth some of their guys' lives, and lots of time and money, and Darfur can be dealt with properly. Otherwise not. Sigh: "never again" again. How predictable.

IMO the area needs more guns. They should just airdrop guns everywhere. Give it a few months and they will all kill themselves for us.

I was really pissed the uk was uvercommited at the time. People with macheties on camels commiting genocide? Man, say a company of the gerkahs or paras could have defended the camp. Less with a couple of choppers.

Very much against war, but those punters sooo had it comming.

I hate how Darfur has become an effete rallying point for Abercrombie and Fitch liberals.

Its a genocide people, not a lets hold hands and stick flowers and guns peacemongering.

Regardless, the entire international response has been stupid. I seem to recall Colin Powell saying at one point that there was no genocide in Darfur, rather that it was "Killing on a massive scale" or some other stupid buzzword.

Stupid yes, but what can you expect? Sudan is from what I hear an ally of the War on Terror, and thus we won't screw with him one bit.

An ALly of the War on Terror? How? They contribute nothing! They have nothing TO contribute! This is aimed at whoever is feeding this lie, not you, Dawgphood

Perhaps they prevent training camps from being set up in their country, or some other deed like that.

I'm not doubting it's effectiveness, it's just rather ironic.
