n0x-01 -- I Wonder...

Nice Sina. I've got another SG to play now so I'll look in more depth later but trading around DR sounds fine to me. We've may as well get something else from it. We need Optics to get Astronomy which we need soon.

And guilds and a few knights will do well to keep the vultures from taking us on. The 600 gold will also go towards a bit of deficit research right now to get us our free democracy.

We should then change civics. We'll have a few choices open up with Liberalism and Democracy coming in at the same time.

EDIT: Do you want to play 2 or 3 more to get liberalism in and then we will be at a good point in the game to discuss some more tactics?

Trades for DR:
Hatty - Guilds + World map + 220 gold
Mao - 380 gold
Genghis - Optics + 10g

Banking and Gunpowder are out there now.

Huayna comes asking for Open Borders next IBT and I accept in the hope that he'll be trading Banking to us later.

Liberalism is researched in 1478AD and I take Democracy as free tech.

Huayna is indeed willing to trade Banking for DR now. I get 20 gold additionally.

Research possibilities at 80% science:
- Economics 6 turns
- Gunpowder 4 turns
- MT 9 turns
- Astronomy 10 turns
- RP 8 turns

Nobody has Economics yet, but Huayna or Hatty might well be close to it. We might want to research it next anyway because of Free Market.

We have a monopoly on Nationalism, Education and Printing Press.

Taj Mahal in 4 turns.

The Statue would take 59 turns, 2250 hammers. We really need that Copper.
I make the deal right away as Hatty is willing to throw 9 gpt in the deal. Spices and Stone for Copper and 9gpt is a reasonable deal.
The Statue now takes 39 turns. We'll have a GA at the start of it and Archimedes. He'll give half of it now. Will that change during a GA?

The new save:

If no one has Education then research Economics and pick up a free GP is my preference. Perhaps wait and see on using the GE?

Thanks for playing those turns Sina.

I agree with Kanga, we should shoot for the free Great Merchant.

We don't need to rush on the Statue. No one is going to get to Democracy any time soon. I am quite amazed at the tech lead we have. All the wonders are helping us to pop a lot of GP's and then we can burn them on techs which give us more lead and the ball gets bigger and bigger... Now we get a golden age from Taj Mahal just to boost us a bit more.

If we end up going for a space race win, we are really going to miss having copper. That deal with Hatty is a good deal. Will we need stone for any more wonders?

I'm thinking we might want to start thinking about some of the national wonders as well. They are as useful as world wonders in a lot of cases.

I'll have a scratch around in the save and see if I can add some more comments tonight. I will probably have to play next as Ralph is stuck on a business trip and won't be able to help us.

ok... I've got it and am playing now... It's been a while, I'll have to recall what we want to do...

Research, Economics for the free Great Merchant then onto Astronomy for what it unlocks. Not 100% on astronomy, I'll have a look when I get there.
Towns: Finish Taj, Finish Statue, Finish research buildings and maybe a few defensive units and missionaries.
Workers: Lots of cottages as it's getting late and they won't have time to fully develop if we dont finish them soon.

12 turns for today if I counted correctly. I stopped on turn 315.

(0)-1478AD
Taj in 4... Excellent.
I revolt to Emancipation and Pacifism. Emancipation as we have a lot of new cottages coming up and I want them to grow and pacifism because I want to boost our production of GP's. The net on our economy is no cost. We should go out of theology as soon as we aren't producing military any more.
I MM the capital to emphasise production and it makes a Great Prophet a little more likely. We need one more for the Islamic Shrine.
(1)
Bombay: Islamic Monastery -> Courthouse
Calcutta: Courthouse -> University
Trade gems to Alex for 9gpt.
(2)
:coffee:
IBT: Ghenghis Khan comes asking for us to cancel deals with Hatty. She's giving us Copper that we want for the statue, so I say No, not at the moment. I then cancel the free bananas we are giving him and trade them back to him for some fish. Then I sold him some dye for 7gpt.
(3)
Another wonder down :D :D

Civ4ScreenShot0081.jpg

Delhi: Taj -> Statue of Liberty
Karachi: Granary -> Library
Nanjing: Granary -> Libary
A Great Prophet is born in Delhi. I send him to Bombay to build the Islamic Shrine. That's the last shrine we can build. Now we need to spread religions.

Civ4ScreenShot0082.jpg

I push research to 100% during the Golden Age as we can afford it.
(4)
Madras: Courthouse -> Christian Monastery
IBT: Economics comes in and I revolt straight to Free Market for the trade.
(5)
I choose Astronomy as our next research target.
The Great Merchant is sent to Memphis as it's the most profitable city I can find. (2550 gold).
(6)
I MM a bit to emphasise growth and therefore allow our cities to use all those cottages. They take time to grow but the cities need to be big enough to work them all.
IBT: Both Ghenghis Khan and Alex both start Golden Ages too!!!!
(7)
:coffee:
(8)
Bangalore: Uni -> Hindu Missionary
Guangzhou: Courthouse -> Harbor
(9)
Madras: Christian Monastery -> Bank
Hanno (Great Merchant) arrives in Memphis and gives us 2550 gold. We can now afford to run 100% research for a long long time.
(10)
:coffee:
(11)
Bombay: Courthouse -> Knight
Bangalore: Hindu Missionary -> Hindu Missionary.
(12)
Lahore: Uni -> Barracks

Astonomy in (1) and Statue in (17) <- This is GA turns so will go out a bit once the GA finishes next turn. No-one has democracy so it's not a threat.

We need to build banks, grocers and markets in our shrine cities to increase the shrine income by 100%. We can also pick one of them for Wall Street but we need enough banks to build that so it can wait a little longer.

Always remember we have free civic swaps, use them if you see a civic that will suit us for even 5 turns as you can go back afterwards. You can use this by starting a number of military unit builds in a number of cities and before they finish you switch to Theocracy.. and then after 5 turns switch back. You can also put a building in front of the units just before they are finished so the unit goes into the queue. When you have a number of cities with units queued behind buidlings, switch civics, finish all the units at once. Takes a bit of preparation and care but it's not too difficult.

Another point, we need to watch our power level. Build military if you can't think of anything else to build. And missionaries. Lots of them. Let's spam them to every city we can possibly send them to.

Civ4ScreenShot0083.jpg

Give me your thoughts on what civics we should go to. I would like to switch to Universal Sufferage when we have spread religion a bit more as we will have gold to spend on rushing things. Free Speech once we finish the statue to give us +2 :commerce: from towns and a bit later, free religion for the boost to relations.

Here's the save:

Good turns. :goodjob:

I was sure we were in OR when I played last, so never even bothered to look. My fault. :blush:

I'd say UniSuff/Free Speech/Free Market/Free Religion is the way to go long term with the possibility of switching to Bureaucracy and OR when building wonders.

I think that unless Ralph is still lurking, Kanga can play next if he wants to.

I think we need missionaries, banks, markets and grocers in the shrine cities, a bit of military here and there and lots of research.

The research path... Astronomy's due in 1. We should then go for replaceable parts and onto gunpowder and chemistry. Although I am wide open to other suggestions.

Still lurking but happy just to help out if you lose momentum or somebody needs a skip.

looks like you have this fairly well wrapped up.

Ralph

I am back, Kiknit or Sina, would one of you make a rooster ;) . As I am a bit confused :crazyeye: . Then we will roll this thing up!!

BTW- Excellent work while I was gone :goodjob:

Got it and will play now!

BTW- Vacation was great and much needed!

Edit: I forgot that I let a friend borrow my Civ disk to play while I was on vacation. I am trying to convince him that Civ is vastly superior to World of Warcraft, so I will probably play and post tonight or tomorrow (he is at work).

Edit: I forgot what day of the week it was when I got back, hence my friend is not at work he is on vacation because (here in the States) Monday is Memorial Day and it is a long weekend, so please be patient. If I don't expect to get it by the end of today I will have to request a skip :cry:.

If it's ok with people and Atlas hasn't posted by then, I could swap turns with Atlas and play when I'm back home about 8 hours from now.

1535 Inherited Turn
1538 Tech > Replacable Parts - Gunpowder - Rifling. GA ends, SoL back out to 22 turns. Keep up the cottage spam.
1541 Note Bombay unhealthy - need grocer next. No health trades available.
1544 Bombay > Settler. Even if we can't get the land to the south (I bet someone is there already, its a ripper site) I like to have one on hand for an opportunistic move. Think to check diplomacy screen... we are in thick with Hatty and JC (and they like each other). I'm thinking that its a bit late to change friends now so I'll handle diplomacy with this in mind from now.
1547 Guangzhou > workboat (for the whales). Genghis' and Alex's golden ages end.
1550 Knock knock. Who's there?

HC offers Gunpowder for Liberalism. I say no. Nanjing > Theatre, Lahore > Market.
1553 Bummer. I was right, Genghis got in first.

1556 Bombay goes unhappy as well as unhealthy. I contemplate going 10% culture as it won't hurt research time, but decide that with whales next turn not to bother. As an aside - I wonder if banks and the like will help with $ at 100% research? Bombay > grocer
1559 Alex is a demanding so and so.

No.
