Native Americans vs. Finno-Ugric

Yes, in a way that is true. This map shows the situation in 1000-1100 AD. Veps, Mari, Merya, Permians etc. are Finno-Ugric kingdoms that were later conquered by Slavonic tribes.

If Indo-Europeans would have not left their homelands and conquered Europe with their war chariots, Finno-Ugric tribes and Basques could still be in charge in most of Europe. This is why I find them interesting.

Because Civilization series is about "what if?", I think it would be interesting to see some old forgotten civilizations that "did not make it", but in other circumstances could have evolved into great Empires.

I like historical what ifs too. ^^

It'd be nice if Firaxis put out an expansion pack of Ancient Europe like that. That's unlikely though so it would have to be left up to some ambitious, creative modder.

Hmm, interesting. How about just using a "slavic" civ to represent all the various eastern european countries, then?

Russian ethnos includes some Finno-Ugric influences, but it definitely not represents the Finno-Ugric group, mainly because the assimilation influences from Russian settlers to Finno-Ugric natives were stronger then the reverse ones.

Having said that, "Finno-Ugric" as a civ is ridiculous. Better just include Hungary as a representation of Central Europe instead of Poland.

Basically it sounds like a scenario/mod idea. Imagine Europe without English, Russian, Roman Civilizations, but filled with finno-urgic, celtic, goth and other protocultures. Which, of course, historically did started Russian, English (at least British) and German Civilizations, but still.

Could be somewhat interesting. Especially if some smart system of Civilization renaming is implemented.

This fits in, of course.

But it is obvious that there is no place for, say, American Civilization in this world of ancient tribes.
