NC CXIV: Charlemagne of the Holy Roman Empire

1915 AD Domination victory! End score: 52303. Top 3 land units: Mechanized Infantry (29), Infantry (28), Cannon (15). Lesser amount of Gunships and Tanks. Small numbers, but basically only one city was building military by the endgame.

Spoiler :
Yes, it was enough for Domination to conquer Native America. I got rid of the red angry faces on my cities by building theatres, colosseums, temples and markets. I hoped that I could resume building Wealth as soon as factories were done. Unfortunately, factories made my cities starve. Because of that I had to build different health buildings instead (aqueducts, grocers, public transportation)

The lazy way to sort out sad faces is to raise your culture slider. Everry 10% gives +1 :) in every city (this is BEFORE theatres - they will give you an extra +1 :)). It's good to use when you have a load of land and the game is basically over anyway.

Spoiler :

Diplo victory 1953, 40549 pts. I was going space and six turns were left before the spaceship arrived when I happened to win this vote. I pretty much stayed with the same strategy as my last update and aside from two late wars with Sury, one around the time of spaceship launch, everything else was peaceful. I was at pleased with De Gaulle the entire game and because we shared so long a border I was hesitant to attack even though I had infantry before he had rifles. I also got a ton of tech from him, my economy made heavy use of espionage and I ran nationalism ever since constitution. I hardly traded any technology since I could steal it and De Gaulle seemed to keep up with me until nearing the end by building research in most of his cities fairly often. I built most of the late game wonders except for Rock and Roll and Three Gorges Dam while sabotaging De Gaulle's production of these wonders. Founded and spammed Mining Co and Sushi to all cities on my two continents, Miing Co was a bit later than it should have been with some bad luck in getting a great engineer.

I've got to remind myself to use vassals rather than to play with 30+ cities up to the 1950s.

Charlemagne was bit better than I expected him to be, mostly because of the rathaus. If I had expanded to this extent with a non-organized leader I would have hurt my economy very badly. Drafting protective muskets/rifles/infantry is pretty useful as well.

1810AD update

Spoiler :
Built the UN hoping I'd get a diplo win, but am lacking 40-ish votes. Mehmed and Sitting Bull are never going to vote for me due to religion and previous wars (think you need +5 relations), and Sury is the other candidate. Don't think I will bother to wait for spaceship. Have built some galleons and have access to artillery and infantry now, so actually think I'll head over to Sury's and hopefully get enough land that way to get domination or diplomatic - while also teching towards space. He has a lot of soldiers and is fairly advanced, but hopefully I'll still be able to kick his ass.

I am going for a a 1900+ domination win on monarch.
I will write my summary soon.
This tectonics map is very funny but also unbalanced.
I wonder if the map was tampered with?

Also I have some fun idea for people to try:
2 challenger modes: spoiler - revealed mapp
Spoiler :

fun mode:
competition to achieve a fastest conquest victory (conquer every city on the map)
- good to practice naval logistics
- (you simply continue to play after you achieve your primary victory condition)
- report time taken and time taken since you achieved your primary victory condition

I think I might do this one. since I am playing on monarch Surry is still at least at tech parity or slightly above.

evil mod :p
You play the map again, but start as native americans (+2 imaginary difficulty levels
- excellent rush practice
- you have to dog or horse rush - or you don't have a chance at this map.
- and after rushing mehmed you have to naval expansion/invasion rush
- I think NA start in this game was extremely bad.

- maybe make this some future game?

1842AD Diplomatic Victory :king:

Spoiler :
Didn't have the votes for straight UN, so went to war with Sury, who was the opponent. Quickly took a few cities, which gave me enough votes to win diplomatically. I guess this is what you call Diplomation. Sury was quite advanced, but the bulk of his force was still medieval. The only tough defenders he had were a few machine gunners. He had a lot of Cuirs in the city I landed next to, and attacked me. Didn't land a single kill, and at the end of the round he was willing to negotiate, before I had taken a single city! :D

Thanks for the map, it was interesting. Got to see a good use of the UN as well, to end the game much quicker than it would have taken otherwise.

More importantly, Emperor is probably my level now, considering this went so well from a position with pretty lousy land.

The Rathouse is an amazing building. Best UB in the game?

City Raider 3 Infantry is pretty decent too, as is Drill IV MGs :D

Finally the pesky imageshack is working :crazyeye:

Spoiler :
Constantinople was rushed down. I thought that Justinian was finally killed but he ******* escaped to Adrianople. Hunt continued and my brave swordsmen marched to their new palace. They faced massive byzantine defences. Fight was began:

Every single soldier of Byzanth was killed. Justinian was scared. He waited in his palace when my catapults ruined walls of his palace. Swordmans marched to his hall. Their commander, Holy Burger King (me XD) followed them to Justinian's hall. "You shall not cause any more trouble to me Justinian! Its time to revenge!! Its time to die Justinian, and then youll be just normal AI in my future lives (games)".
He took a bow in his arms and shot Justinian his death. Holy Burger King placed Justinian's crown to his head and said: " I'm no more angry to you. R.I.P."

Justinian was finally defeated.

I made two wonders:

I have four cities and am feeling boxed in. As this is the first time playing a noble's club game I am looking for any suggestions anyone has. I have quite a large tech lead at the moment and am debating about a cultural or domination victory.

I've founded Judaism, Christianity, & Taoism. I think a cultural victory could be possible however I've never done that before. Well actually I've only played about three total games so far and haven't won one yet. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

@tmorgan: Welcome to CFC!!!:cheers::banana::band::banana: I checked your save file and noticed that we are same lvl players :) I think that your REXing was not so great... Perhaps you should claim more land in the start of your next game. I quess that rushing an AI civ would be awesome. Research was really good. And one more question: Why you've converted to judaism? Did you found it? If you'll convert to buddhism
Spoiler :
Justy and Wang will be happy and they are gonna hate confusianist de Gaulle
. You have good chances to any kind of victory! Keep going :) By the way; I'll change my avatar today. 'You know who' is now finished.

@tmorgan2005

Spoiler :
Welcome to the forum!
I can't really speak authoritatively on going for culture but I wouldn't recommend it since you don't have access to marble although there is someone you could take it from nor does it mesh that well with Charlemagne's traits which are both war oriented.

REX is the early game strategy most use and settling 6 or more cities by 1 AD is a good benchmark. If you want to rush someone with chariots or axes settling less may be fine.

Never research something because the the tips tell you to. With your placement of the capitol (which is fine) agriculture is the right choice followed by mining with the purpose of improving and working your best tiles as soon as possible (corn and gold). You did research bronze working pretty early but why not settle the city near copper?

Founding religions can be good for culture strategies but it is not a good investment in hammers to spread those religions to the AI. It's usually better to be converted by an AI and choose your allies that way. I could have converted to Justinian's religion or Wang's and made my decision based on who I wanted to attack. The more different AIs found a religion, the more the will run their own religion and end up warring against eachother.

Try to farm a great scientist by 1 AD. When founding religions, a great priest may be desired instead or after the GS.

Unless you can work the good resources in the inner ring around a city the first build I often make is a monument since the library takes so long (not necessary for capitol obviously).

I don't think this map is that easy and there are a bunch of different city layouts people used. One of the biggest challenges you'll have is all that open land that De Gaulle has. It's not too late to take that barb city and settle at least one more spot down there.

Too early to need temples in your cities, probably a bit early for a market. Remember, don't listen to the advisor for what to build, what to research or what to research.

@Pangaea
Spoiler :
Good game! I scouted Sury with a great merchant for a possible invasion and opted against it. I have a hard time estimating just how gigantic a force I will need to face most of an AI army on the other side of the world. Sury actually passed De Gaulle in my game and I didn't even knock De Gaulle around at all. Constantinople (heroic epic) was bigger than Seoul in my game at size 29 vs 24. Both were much better than Aachen.

Spoiler :
It's fun when things come together pretty well, and I felt they did in this game. Went to war early with a good amount of axes, secured a capital, and then yet another when Wang Kon daggered/dogpiled me.

Constantinople was a mammoth of a city, and had I gotten it earlier maybe that would have become the HE city instead (but Aachen did very well, pumping units all game bar the odd health, happiness and production building). Seoul was a great capital site though, with all those grassland river tiles. Shame it was so late to develop due to peace vassaling and being swamped in Korean culture, but it turned out great by the end.

Sury was an odd case in my game. He teched really well and had higher power than me for quite some time, but he didn't choose all that many military techs, and for some reason didn't upgrade a lot of units. So while Mehmed had rifles and would be more costly to take down, Sury was kind of a pushover actually. A machine gunner in each city, but other than that he couldn't do anything to the invading cavalry and infantry - especially the front that had artillery as well. Almost a shame the game ended, because it would have been fun to totally crush him

I scouted him with an airship btw. Was surprised that worked, but it did. Thought I could only station them in my or the vassals' cities. It of course got magically transported out upon DoW, but by then I knew what forces he had and where they were.

Massive round: 1500-1901AD
Spoiler :
I found some new people in this round:

He hates me :p

Right after that I shocked bc of this:

What the... Why he did that. He has no chances against me- hopefully.

I made some wonderlike things (BAT mod has a video for Mahabodhi!!)

And of course. The Ottomans surprised me and took a coastal city from me. Fortunately it was easy to take back but they tried to capture it many many times during the war.

Libby race victory:

I captured cities of Samsun and Ankara + I razed a couple of cities. I gave them back to him bc of overseas maintenance costs.

That war took very very very long time. (I had no navy before that).

I had a little upgraded army left and I found SB who was neighbor of Mehmed. I had to capitulate him cuz De Gaulle was now master of Koreans. He was in the score-lead.

DONE! I CAPITULATED SB!!

In the end of this massive round Wang broke free and Korea was a free country.

Here is some map from my game:

And score graph:

I was thinking to go for space. However: No one likes me anymore in the map. What if strong De Gaulle DoWs me and its game over? What to do? Avoid wars? Cap Korea? Naval battle with Sury? Massive fight with French? HELP!!!

SAVE FILE: :D

Emperor, normal speed, conquest 1868

Spoiler :

A fun game.

SIP. I soon discovered that Charlemagne is bordered by 3 AIs, all very close to our capital. Knowing that land will be at a premium and that early war will be necessary, I beelined BW while grabbing a city to the south to block the French. Once BW came online I settled my third city to grab the nearby bronze.

I prefer to rush either immediately with one or 2 cities at the most or slightly later once Alphabet is online or is on the way. Having expanded to size 3, I decided to beeline IW, planning to complete my early conquest as Alphabet comes online.

Fortune was with me, as iron was found in my capital's BFC. A quick check showed that no one had metal yet! I pumped out a bunch of swordsmen to go along with the axemen and spearmen I had already made. Once I had a fairly good sized stack I DOWed on the French.

Meanwhile, the Koreans had converted to Hinduism while Byzantium went Buddhism. With the war going well against the French, I converted to Hinduism which allowed me to bribe the Koreans into war with Byzantium.

I ended up destroying the French without extorting any techs - they were way behind technologically.

Since the rest of the word converted to Buddhism, I followed suit. Doing so enabled me to avoid war while expanding and teching to Rifling. Once I had rifles, I made short work of the Koreans. By this time, Byzantium had muskets and so I teched to Steel and built some cannon before declaring on them. They too fell in short order.

At this point the game was clearly over and it was simply mop-up. I took out the Ottoman and the Native Americans to the south with infantry and then rolled over the Khmer with tanks.

Done! Diplomatic victory at 1980AD. No screenshots added...:(
Spoiler :
I decided to capitulate Wang and I managed to do it successfully. I was going to space but when I had only 1 part left from my space shuttle Idiot warmonger-Sury made UN just after he declared war to me and De Gaulle (we had def-pact) ((That means Khmer against whole world)). I was now president of UN and wanted to make Diplo vote and quess what. I was winner of the game. Rediculous!! I'm trying prince in IU next time :) Thx for this map!

Immortal no huts, no events 1812 Diplomation (with pictures):
Spoiler :

BC's:
Started with SIP, worker first. Tons of production decent food, bad commerce. Built settler on 2 pop, but CDG still beat me to the spot where he built Orleans. I built Prague next to it, and fortunately he didn't have mysticism until the late BCs (when I traded it to him) so Prague got the corn uncontested. Third and fourth cities were in the north, grabbing the deer, beaver and sheep. Built stonehenge and the mids the capital, while pumping workers in other cities. Got GE, and GP, settled both for +6:science: from rep. Settled GP farm on the sheep, though it was so production poor I think I only got 2-3 GP's from it throughout the game.

You can see my continent is a Buddhist lovefest (founded by Justinian). Mehmed+SB are Hindu, and Sury is Jewish.
Ht5BF1P.jpg

50AD:
Since the start was production rich, but commerce poor, I knew I had to DOW on someone. Since CDG was closest, and seemed to have lots of land, I decided to DOW him before construction, but still somewhat late. Perhaps Justinian would have been a better choice, but I was afraid of him bribing Wang in.

SGiNSP1.jpg

800AD:
Second war with CDG. He got feudalism but I got construction and Paris. It had the GLH and the Parthenon, nice.
QxXv0GH.jpg

To 1390AD:
Won Liberalism by 1 turn around 1100-1200 and took chemistry since others already had Nationalism. Wang was nice enough to tech both Economics and Steam Power after he had Philo/Edu before going for Lib. What a nice guy. Then self-teched steel and prepared for a canon/musket/maceman war to finish off CDG. CDG was at war with Mehmed, so I dog-piled and took Lyons, throwing swordsmen at xbows. Made peace when his mace/xbow stack was about to destroy my sword/axe stack.
QvIzzpy.jpg

To 1812:
Before I could start my war on CDG, Wang peace vassaled to me. I made a bunch of trades with him immediately, millitary science + x vs steel + y. On the turn that my peace treaty ended with CDG (1400's) he peace vassaled to Justinian. Since I could see Justinian just had muskets and longbows in his city, whereas I had grenadiers, I decided to DOW anyways. They bribed Mehmed in, who was actually annoying by launching amphibious assaults, and forcing me to retake cities.

Eventually wiped CDG out, and wiped Justinian off the continent (he had 8+ cities on the islands since he went for Astro early), then let him cap. Traded for astro from him. Then took Mehmed's city on my continent, and he cap'd as soon as I landed troops on his mainland (didn't have to take an other city). Then I cap'd Siting Bull after taking one of his cities and killing his stack.

During this time I'm tech brokering between my vassals, as my :commerce: and :science: is pretty bad for the date. I'm also asking them not to trade with Sury. I'm preparing to attack Sury with inf/arty since SB already had rifling when I fought him, so I expected Sury to have infantry, at least. By the time I have a decent inf/art/canon force, Sury doesn't have rifling, but it takes me a while to build enough galleons/frigates. I DOW on him in the 1700's, take his cities on the small island, and start taking his cities on the big island, and eventually take his hollywood city on his home continent, some 6 cities in total.

Sury researched railroad in about 7 turns after I dow'd, but he had 1 machine gun per city max, and artillery>machine guns. Then it was taking him 8 turns to research assembly line (an other immortal player posted that Sury got AL in 5 turns in his game), which he didn't finish before the game ended. He was teching electricity, mass media, and built the UN. I won the vote in 1812.

MOA3Vwp.jpg

Also, a final screen shot to show the power of workshops + caste system + state property + biology + chemistry + factories + coal plants:
lO45B2n.jpg

Map:
This is my second immortal win. IMO it was easier than most maps since Justinian and Wong were so small, they didn't really play like immortal AI, and CDG was expanding slowly, so his production wasn't a problem. Meanwhile Sury had no one to trade with, and SB is hard to kill, yet doesn't attack, so those guys were small as well.

Didn't get to play this when it was released as I was busy. Was bored and decided to play this one and it's pretty fun so far. Immortal, Normal Speed, No Huts, No Events upto 700 AD.

Spoiler :

I settled in place as there wasn't any compelling reason to move. I moved the scout south first and did see the gold but didn't feel losing two turns to pick it up was justified. Tech path was Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Mining, Bronzeworking, Masonry, Wheel, Pottery, Writing, Aesthetics and then I had to self tech Alpha as DeGaulle and Justinian were derping it up and Wang was naturally chasing CoL for his favourite civic.

Made this trade with Just.

Spoiler :

Justinian is probably the most fanatical AI in the game. He's Isabella on steroids who actually builds units. I figured as long as I stayed Buddhist, the war declaration penalty will not drop me below Pleased, so I pulled the trigger.

Since Currency is out, I decided to trade it to Just.

I did all this as I was bulbing my way to engineering. I was planning on nailing Wang who chases CoL. He founded Confu and switched, becoming a heathen and he was seriously pressing me in with all his cities in my face. So I decided to get some fireworks going so I get shared war bonuses with the AIs that will live, for now. :mischief:

Met Mehmed and SB. Mehmed made this demand I gave into.

I was already accumulating a few Crossbows by this point. I declared on Wang in 125 AD and swept through his lands. I reduced him to a single city in 475 AD and took peace for techs.

This now gives me a lot of land to work with and secures me a source of Horses. I think I will now sit back and tech to Cuirs as DG is pretty big and I don't want to fight a slow war with him. I am also hoping Justinian builds the Buddhist shrine for me. He just built the AP.

Over the next few turns I will let my whipped cities recover, spawn a GS to build an academy in my new cap, build the Heroic Epic in the old one and see if I can build the NE in Seoul. It's under culture pressure from Byzantines.

I think the game's pretty much in the bag now. I do have to say it's a weird map though. So many peaks and so much brown near us. Funnily enough I built only one Landshneckt. The war was single handedly won by Crossbows. I am hoping to get more use out of the HRE UB though.
