NC LXIV: Louix XIV of France

immortal/normal 1942 space victory

Spoiler :

i deleted the huts and as for the start it went mining -> bw -> masonry -> AH -> fishing -> sailing.

capital went warrior -> worker -> worker -> settler -> worker -> gw (actually failed by 1 turn. whoever built it beelined it) -> mids -> lighthouse -> glh.

the people who are going early fishing are making a big mistake i think. you're not gonna be cottaging paris (at least i hope not) so growing doesnt really do anything. in addition a crab only gives you 4f/0h/2c whereas a farmed grassland will give you 3/0/1. with an industrious leader and stone that close you really want to be going for wonders asap imo. even if not the early production you get from getting bw and chops asap more than makes up for the minor gain in actually making a work boat.

anyways after early wonder rush settled the middle pig/marble then did the usual wonders, and moved my capital there to run bureaucracy. with the stone/marble and industrious i close built tons of wonders for fail gold.

i dont really like going for cultural victories since you're so at the whim of a ai dow. but i guess it would have been pretty easy this game. fredrick did dow me once with like a maceman/a knight/and like 2 trebs heh. i just made some musketeers and threw him off my land.

I raced to a huge tech lead but eventually suleiman tied up with me due to how much land he got. i actually only beat him by 1 turn, and that was thanks to tokugawa dowing him towards the end. thanks toku you're a real pal.

the very end what i should have done was make spam cities everywhere i could find land and work specialists since i was in caste the whole game. sushi was giving me +10 food and with representation a city working 0 tiles would still have been able to give me like +60 research a turn with specialists and trade routes. oh well live and learn.

Ok I got the pic to go inside the spoiler, but it still shows on the attachment. If I delete the attachment, then the pic in the spoiler will go away as well right? Is there somewhere on the website I'm supposed to download pics so they are saved and I can use the
?

I think deleting the attachement should work fine and leaving the img in the sopiler, attachements are usually for saves anyway.... Still we all gotta learn this sometime!:D

I'm planning on a cultural win since I've never done it. Selected the custom scenario with marathon and no espionage

Some say 'no espionage' kind of breaks the cultural victory, because it converts espionage into culture, and changes the thresholds rather than the more sensible option of just removing it out of the game. So you might want to play with it on. Besides it can be fun, a good source of getting techs sometimes ;)
This allows you to play without espionage without messing up culture, but you probably can't use it for NC to upload your saves, as other users may not have it

You're right, the pic is still there after deleting the attachment.

Now that that is figured out, I'll post up my 1000BC update when I get home.

Didn't even know there was a mod for that!

Since I've already played to 1000BC, I'll just finish this game as is and not start over. Now that I know where people are and what my resouces are. Plus, the AI gets the same additional culture as well, just may not be smart about it.

I plan to play some games with espionage and learn how to use it, but not this time.

OK, here's 1000BC. Feel free to comment;

Spoiler :

Making Tech trades with Fredrick has made him pleased, while Justinian wouldn't trade and his religion won't spread with either of us and remains cautious. Also traded rice and cow to get Ivory from Fredrick.

I teched Fish, Mining, BW, Myst, Med, Priest and went for Oracle. Then teched Pottery, Sailing, AnHusb, Writing and Alpha. Got the Oracle and used it on MC, which I traded Arch and IW for. Traded Med for Hunt. Built Colassus also.

Currently teching Curr and starting to rex, building settlers and workers. Wondering if I should settle on an Island to block the AIs. If I should let the first gp be a prophet and use him for theology to found Christianity? And which city will be the best GP farm.

To upload a save:
when you're on the screen making a post, below the "post icons" there's additional options. Choose "manage attachments" and a screen should pop up. Then simply choose file and hit upload :)

Spoiler :

I thought a good GP farm site was that site within range of rice, fish and cow. Lots of food to help you run specialists, you can grow to around 7 or 8 pop on that amount of food.
If you were going for oracle, I might have considered getting pottery sooner? Its a fair way to deviate, and meditation is of little benefit (since you probably have no religion) so its a bit of a filler when you might be getting something a little more useful. But the free tech is nice, if you make sure you get it... Ah I dunno :p

End game.
Spoiler :

Not the best implemented, and neglected the military somewhat. Couldn't be bothered to expand lol.. yeah its a bit shoddy. Was focusing too much on the cultural victory, which I got in 1860AD ish.
(forgot to save it, so this is 3 turns before)
Toku dowed me and I didn't respond because, well, I'd hit the finish line near enough :)
Was pleased with my GP farm use, I've never done one properly before, this one worked well

To get to Oracle I thought you needed priest which needs med. Can you get to Oracle through pott then priest?
That's the city I was leaning towards as well, all 3 have good food resources which made it difficult to choose.

Where do you guys up load a pic so I can use the
to put the pic in the spoiler?

Or is there another way to put jpegs in the spoiler?

OK, I looked at everyone else's jpegs in the spoilers and everyone is using photobucket. Hopefully its free.

Spoiler :

Pottery doesn't help you get the oracle, but it lets you get cottages up quicker. I'm not sure how the AI value it, so you might not need to beeline priesthood, neglecting other techs.
What I meant was if you don't research pottery, you delay it for like 20-30 turns (depending on speed) which is some healthy growth time and gives you some more time to expand. Did you start building the oracle as soon as the tech was researched? If you didn't, those turns could have been used years ago for pottery etc. and in the meantime you could get cottages or something. Just a thought, probably doesn't make a huge difference

Interesting setup. I don't think I've ever played as Louis XIV before. What a wonder whore!
Spoiler :

And an isolated start and stone and marble nearby to boot. I never get the early wonders, but this game was an exception. Great Wall helped me rex out and secure the continent. Great Lighthouse kept the economy strong. Explored east and found and settled the big one city island there, then continued east and found Justinian's continent. Settled those awesome flood plains before he made it that far west. Bombed a Great Artist there to hold the borders, and eventually settled two more cities on Justinian's edge. He founded Hinduism and that was the first religion to spread to my cities (very early in the game) so he has been pleased or friendly with me all game long for having the same religion.

Great People are just dropping off the trees in this game. I next met Frederick and got him to Pleased early. He'll be my next target though. As soon as I got caravels, I discovered Toku just to my south. I got to rifles while he still had sticks, and as of now I'm finishing off his last few cities on the southern edge of his continent. As soon as Toke is gone, I'm turning my sights on Frederick and his fat little nation. If I have to, I'll take out the Byzantines. Suleiman is the biggest rival empire, Boudicca is next but she is farther behind in the tech race. Shaka is the weakest big landmass.

This game was over about the time my landmass was secure and I had a foothold in the Byzantine continent.

I'm on Noble, should have played on Prince at least. My last few games had been challenging though, on Noble, sandwiched around a loss on Prince, so I went conservative on this one. I bet I could have had my first Monarch win on this map.

Edit. Hmm. Late game more challenging.
Spoiler :

Isolated starts are a bit thorny. I'm going to try to spread corps to Boudica and Shaka. See how that works.

Monarch/Normal, to 375BC (100turns)

I haven't gone far yet. Spent the whole Christmas messing with NC 16. I was not mistaken, it's NC 16, not NC 61. It's one of toughest map in NC series, at least what I have played. Many struggles. That was fun. It was interesting that the map maker was TMIT, who often whines for map with larger than usual lands. I guess this must be before he realized that considering the map is 2 yrs old.

Spoiler :

OK. Back to our map. I was not looking for wonders until I realized that we are alone on the initial land. So, I went back for some wonder, first GW, then tried both GLH and Oracle. Oracle got beaten by 1 turn, so I went back and reload and did some tweak and got it. Shame.

My initial city planning is much alike vranasm, at least for the first 3. Then, my scouting workboat found the fish/rice island. So I founded my 4th city there. Then met justinian and found he was rexxing slow, so I sent another settler to his land and hopefully, I'll have time to send another before AD.

The island city expanded the culture and met Fred and later Meh. The scouting boat will explore their land as it came back from Justinian's place. Self tech Monarchy for happy cap and oracled CoL and now working on CS and hope that can settle my tech lead for good.

375BC, 7 cities, among them, 6 are coastal and 2 are overseas. Still have 5 ideal city sites on my own land and 1 more when optics is available, and 1 more to grab from Justinian's. This should be a blown out map. I guess. A military win is still my target, as usual.

not much screenies:
