NCSG1-Suryavarman II!

Not to sound like a wet blanket here, but I'd like to play Devil's Advocate.

1. Not enough Workers. Lots of lands need developement. Definitely, settling way over into the Sugar and such isn't going to be good for a rush. Gotta get IW for Jungle clearing, lots of Workers, and Calendar.

2. I see potential for at least 4 other city sites, provided Yaso+one other city is cottaged enough to support them. Counting Calendar resources, you have Incense, Sugar, Dye, Silk, and Silver for 5 additional happy faces Civ wide, cheap Granaries to help your cities grow nice and fat. Mild REXing to grab the happies + massive Vertical growth is a real option here. Then use Willem to build Wonders to grab later and as early tech/trade route partner.

Okay, I think this is the point I was trying to make... just Rox put it alot better! I wasn't trying to sound like a wuss! :D

Sure, we could whip up an army quick, sure we could take Willem, but I'm wondering whether its the best choice right now considering we do have space to expand into? If you guys do want willem's blood then ofc thats fine by me :)

Edit - SimonL, Yeah I have that problem too. I think there is a file to fix it but I'm not sure where to find it?

Played my turns, things went very well. I already kicked out another worker, and have the road to the Sugar City almost done. I also have 2 Barracks and 3 Axes out, and Archer Fogbusters in most of the Tundra. Some decent city sites down there for the future, but we need a couple more fogbusters as soon as we stomp Willy.

As for teching, I would rather head straight to Alphabet and Aestetics/Lit and trade for back techs. Once we finish the Oracle, and take CoL, we can trade it around easily for a ton, including IW. There are 2 forests in the Sugar City to chop and cottage, and neither resource has Jungle on it, so the corn and cows can both be improved immediately without IW as well. We do need IW for the dye city, but its not urgent by any means.

For the next few turn-sets, our focus should be as follows:

1. Use chop and whip Overflow in our cap to pump out at least 1 more settler, 1-2 more workers, and continue the Oracle. I can explain those techniques in detail if its unclear, basically you grow to max city size, stick a worker in front of the Oracle, put a turn of hammers into it to avoid the whip penalty, then whip it out for 2 pop, with the overflow going into the Oracle at the regular rate, not the penalty rate for whipping Wonders. Same for Settler, and even an Axeman, but you cant get a 2-pop whip on an Axe easily, it requires some extreme tile micro-management.

2. Chop out the Barracks in the Sugar city, and start on Axes up there once we get the road done. Both new cities should be building Axes right now. Once the Corn and COws are hooked up, the Sugar city is going to grow very fast. Be careful whipping up there, it would probably be a good idea to stop growth with another worker or settler to avoid unhappiness.

3. Copper city is going to pump nothing but axes, with minimal whipping. There are a couple forests to take, but I recommend using forests outside the BFC for Axemen, and saving the inner ones for chopping out other stuff once we tech Maths.

4. Stone has been found, and its actually in Willies new city, which should be our first target. Stone = Mids, guys. With this food-based economy we seem headed for on this map, the Mids is going to basically put the game away for us. We should look to start it ASAP, but not until we have an adequate army to completely take Willy off the map.

5. One more city, DUE North of cap (not the ?? tags I put in, but the dye one) will secure a nice area for us. Adding Willys land, plus a couple reasonable cities in and around the southern Tundra will be plenty to consolidate and tech to Cats + Maces to take out either Qin or Caesar.

And now, heres the turnset. The archer that was headed to our Dye city area encounted a Barb, and got him. He is now planted on a hill up there.

Civ4ScreenShot0050-1.jpg

I pulled the Scout back to our own territory before the culture of Willy and Caesar cut him off, and lookie what he found!

Civ4ScreenShot0054.jpg

As I said, Willy already settled it for us, and hopefully will have the decency to build a Quarry for us before we take him. In the meantime, there are lots of Beavers as well, and we need that happiness if possible. There is also a potential city site to the east with Silver, a river, etc.

Civ4ScreenShot0056.jpg

I also chopped a couple forests, and quickly got barracks out, and even built a couple cottages. Watch our cash level carefully, and swap to +commerce tiles if needed. Once we get CoL, Courthouses become very critical. That sucky patch of desert creates a LOT of distance. We may want to consider moving our Capitol to Willys at some point.

Once the Barracks were up, I started our rushers. I dont see any metals by Willy, but we still dont know. After writing finishes, open borders with him and send our scout over to size him up.

Thats about it. Here is the current status of our cities.

We are in great shape, this game is going to be a laugher once we take Willy out. At Noble, we should be able to tech WAY ahead of the other AIs with our cheap Libraries, Pyramids, and a Food based SE.

ROSTER:
1) Krick19 - Yer up!
2) Groogaroo - on deck
3) schwartz
4) S.ilver
5) Rex rgis of Ter
6) grandad1982
7) Bleys - Just played!

Good set bley. Nice beaver ;)

Ok. A couple of points.

I agree about workers. Levereging this aspect of EXP is exactly the kind of strat that works well with the wonderfull land you claim fast and cheap with CRE. Get the land and improve it fast with cheap workers. This would make workers good for whiping for overflow in to whatever you want.

We don't need to worry about Willem. He ain't going any were between us and Sulieman.

I love granary first if I'm CRE. Its so powerful. Land. Food. Power! (Don't tell anyone, granarys are cheap when you're EXP)

I'll be interested to do learn some good whip/chop/overflow micro managing.

As to moving the cap at some point I think I agree. Its a pretty weak site IMO. Maybe good for Drydocks city, but as a capital the nearby desert and the mass of plains tiles make me abit blughhh. Know what I mean?

We can string a load of decent commece cities in that jungle. I agree tech Aes soon. Its a great trader.

Umm... Thats it for the moment. Dinner time!

Nice turnset Bleys.

Aes/Lit is always my prefered route too, I'll be pretty happy if we run an SE, my prevered style of economy!

PS - Any further tips on the whip/overflow always appreciated its one of those things that I don't 100% get!!!

Okay, I have it. So, I'm churning out axes and whipping workers/oracle. Any specifics on teching? If not, I'll go for what seems right.

Okay, a small update. I went like 5-6 turns on sailing before I realized how important IW would be, so my bad, sorry bout that. We have 6 axes, and The Hague has one archer, Amsterdam 2, and Utrecht has a warrior. He has no copper.
A pic:
Dutchland.jpg

So, should I get defending archers for Hari and Thom? Or should I just hope to blast my way through? Or should I keep stockpiling axes?

The oracle's in 2.

I would stockpile axes while getting IW, upgrade who you can and steamroll Willem then Caesar.

Yeah, I'm just hesitant to let Willem get too many cities/archers.

are five axes enough? by the time you get to amsterdam willem has 3 turns to get 1 or 2 more archers into the city. But I'm no rush expert ;) Looking at the screenshot Amsterdam doesn't look that nice? wheres all the seafood?

6 Axes should be enough to storm Amsterdam if they have the right promotions. It's not built on a hill, so all the better.

Iron working should be a priority. We need to chop the jungles and kill of the AIs. If Rome gets Praetorians before we kill them we're in trouble.
Not worried about Caesar, he sucks as an AI. Just be friends with him, in fact, send the Missionary from CoL RIGHT to Rome.

IW will be more necessary when we are closing in on Calendar, but its not a priority IMHO at all. In the Sugar City we can work 6 reasonalbe tiles, the cottage on the chopped forest grassland, the mine on the chopped forest hill, the 2 improvable food resources, and 2 other tiles that had nothing on it (a farm on the riverside one, and a cottage on the other is my recommendation).

I vote for Alpha next, or Aestetics, followed by Alpha. Trade IW from Caesar for CoL, convert him to Confu with our Missionary, and BOOM, we have a war-toy for the NW chunk of map. We take the SW (Willy, now) and NE (Qin, eventually) ourselves.

I tend to avoid Swordsman at this level. They have a very short window. Maces are so much stronger. Axes are really all we need to take out Willy, and we shouldnt be looking for another war until Maces and Cats for Qin. CS and Machinery are VERY important techs, in fact, after Aestetics, Alphabet and Lit, I suggest CS, MC, and Machinery as fast as we can. Axes are MUCH better units for city defense in support of Archers and Spears. Swordsman are horrible defenders, unless Shock upgraded, and I never give a Sword any upgrade other than CR.

I think we should head into Amsterdam ASAP, 6 axes should be enough for both Amsterdam and Utrech, while the next few Axes we pump out should take The Hague. Willy should be dead soon enough, and we will have all the land we need or want for quite a while. Overextending ourselves would grind our teching into the ground until we get Libraries and the Mids working. Take Willy without Swords, park the left over axes in all cities for defense against enemy Swords, give Caesar anything he asks for, ANYTHING, not kidding, thats why Alpha is key, so we can trade him our better techs for his before he comes asking.

EDITED NOTE: Hmm, I forgot Caesar founded Hinduism. Honestly, we need OR asap as well, and we should try to flood Caesar with Confu missionaries if we can, and convert him. He can be an incredible warmongering friend. We should probably avoid a state religion until we can get Missionaries out, in fact.

IW doesnt do much to stop Praets though. Axes are better for that, but being Caesars buddy is the best plan, heh.

Wow, I'm embarrassed now. I did pretty badly in the last round. Took Amsterdam, but three axes died. :( He somehow had an axe, so be wary. I'm still searching for his copper. I moved two of the remaining axes to The Hague so we could get the stone, but there were two archers. Lost one, beat one. That's where I finished. Will post report soon.

Okay, this started out boring, so I'll skip a bit.

After writing I got OB with Willy, and scouted his land. I also built up axes and finished the Oracle.

I got CoL.

Confucian.jpg

And also,

Classical.jpg

And obviously,

Confucian2.jpg

It was founded in Hari.

Confucian3.jpg

I chose to accept since Hari was unhappy. I then declared on Willy.

My stack attacked Amsterdam which had 2 archers and an axe???

I won with three axes left. I moved two to the Hague for stone. It had two archers.

I lost to one, and beat one.

Sorry bout the weak playing guys. Good luck Groo, hope the Hague falls.

He must be trading for copper. Pillage all his resource tiles so he loses the trade. Its all I can think of. Maybe the stone though, so that could suck.

Do 2-pop whips in the unhappy cities, and then stick a worker in one and a settler in the other to prevent growth til we lose some unhappiness.

No worries Krick, we are fine. I didnt expect an Axe either, I think we all would have done exactly the same thing. We have our best production city right in his face though, so we should be fine.

Nice one Krick.

Looking at the map we can get a city 4E of Thom and work the sugar. Man jungle is prime for commerce - if a little longwinded. Obviously we have some time till them.

Why is the Dam so rubbish? So much for it being a new capital option. Also I think we should raze Utrecht and refound somewhere else. Get a settler there before you raze it. You don't need to settle straight off, just leave it till we can afford it, or the AI threaten - like Don Diety.

Could Willem have got iron in a mine we can't see? In fact is there a mine on a grassland square by the Dam?

Tech wise I'd try to trade for alpha rather than teching it. Math would be good for the chop bonus. Mainly I'd go Aes for trade. coupled with CoL that can get a lot of techs. After fill in trades then 'd like to see MC for the forges - production! - rather than CS as IMO buracracy is a bit weak for us at the moment.

I realise we're in axe mode but if someone can slip in some more workers, that would be great. After my last NC game - I'm falling behind in Kahn (haven't been able to play :( ) - I decided that workers are amazing and I never build enough. Big shout out to KatieKat for bringing that up for me.

What has Conf done to our diplo situation? I can't check the save at the moment.

Could Willem have got iron in a mine we can't see? In fact is there a mine on a grassland square by the Dam?
THATS IT! Good eye Grandad!

Pillage that sucker ASAP. Oops, belay that order! We own that tile now, LOL.

Hey, maybe we take the Hague, and leave Utrech and its crappy spot as Wills only city, and make him cough up IW for peace, planning to wipe him in 10 turns. We need Alphabet to take a tech for peace though, so maybe not even bother, just wipe him, we are teching it ourselves anyway. Thats a nice tile, grass Iron Mines are pretty decent.

Tech wise I'd try to trade for alpha rather than teching it. Math would be good for the chop bonus.

See, I am totally the opposite. I tech Alpha FAST, and NEVER trade it away. It lets me trade the same tech to a number of AIs for different stuff, knowing they cant pass it around themselves. Aest is especially nice to trade, and honestly, I was shocked at what I got for HBR in the NC-KK game.
