Need Help for Diplo Win

Hawk Chieftain said:
Some questions for lurkers:
How can I get my mainland cities to use the Incense on India? I've built a Harbor on both sides, but none of my French cities have access to Incense.

Where should I explore next? I know that there are other civs out there, but I haven't found them yet.

Other than military, what should I have my cities build? I almost have all of French cities have built libraries. Is there anything critical I need to build?

What should I research next? I'm thinking of going for The Sistine Chapel.

Hi Hawk! Here are my 2 gold pieces worth of advice ...

Trade route: Two part answer, from looking at the 150BC save.
First, you need to complete a harbor on the other island. Amiens
doesn't have a harbor, and the one in Dijon is not done yet.
Next, you need to be able to safely travel over *sea* tiles.
Normally, that has to wait for the discovery of Astronomy, but you
have the Great Lighthouse. That probably should suffice.

Exploring: With the GLighthouse, you can now cruise around the sea
tiles to the east of China and Japan, as well as some of the waters
just west of Bengal. I like to use the keypad keys, and follow the
little fingers of sea tiles, as they extend out into the ocean tiles.

Build Next: Military is good, even though PTW doesn't have unit support
under Republic. You will want settlers, to found more cities on India's
island. All the cities over there will be pretty corrupt, but you can
grow them to size 6 and hire scientists. You should be thinking about
a Forbidden Palace -- Dijon might be a good choice, so that you can
reduce the corruption on India's ^H^H^H^H your new island.
I always like building marketplaces in any city above size 5,
for the happiness multipliers. I almost always build harbors in coastal
cities, even corrupt ones, so that they can support themselves.
In your case, with so much water, you will want ships.

Wow... eight sources of incense.

You might want to put a couple of cities on that uninhabited island. One next to the cow and the inland lake, and one to grab the iron. I hate it when sources of iron mysteriously dry up.

There is 1 Korean city on what was India, do I go to war w/Korea to take that city, or do I just surround that city, & try to take the city w/my culture?
Once I finish Theology, I was thinking of starting the Sistine Chapel in Paris. What tech should I start next?
Out of the 3 civs that I know, which ones should become friends with, and who should be my enemy?

There is 1 Korean city on what was India, do I go to war w/Korea to take that city, or do I just surround that city, & try to take the city w/my culture?

Depends on whether your goal is military conquest or a more peaceful approach. Also depends on whether that Korean city is hogging some resource or luxury that you really need.

Once I finish Theology, I was thinking of starting the Sistine Chapel in Paris. What tech should I start next?

I always research the lower branch of the tech tree (engineering, invention, gunpowder, chemistry) because often the AIs don't research it and I'm usually racing towards Military Tradition, to conquer another civ.

But when I played for a 20K win on Monarch (won yesterday), I went straight for Education and Music Theory to get Bach's cathedral.

So it depends on your long-term plan.

If what you want is a diplo win, drive to education. You want libraries and unis so you can drive your research faster. After that, it may make sense to drive to astronomy so you can get newtons.

My long-range plans are to win diplomatically. So, I'll go for Education, then Astronomy.
The Korean city doesn't have any resource, so I'll just let it be.

What is with the luxury distribution? First Indialand has eight incense and now Egyptland has seven spices. Reminds me of the time I picked a 30% land archipelago map with wet conditions, just to see what that was like, and I got a midget jungle-overgrown island with seven silks on it.

I'm sure there is a reason that I don't understand...
but why are 4 of your core cities on wealth, and have warriors sitting on them?

you probably should disband the warriors and start making units or improvements or wonder prebuilds or *something*

Having 4 of your least corrupt cities making nothing is putting a serious drain on your civ - unless I am missing something.

I have some cities that are in my main core on Wealth b/c there doesn't seem anything for them to build except Settler, Worker, and military units. I don't need any Settlers b/c I've expanded as far as I can. I think I have enough Workers. And, I don't need more military units b/c I don't plan on going to war w/anyone in the near future.
What do you think I should build? Why would building Wealth put a serious drain on my civ? Should I upgrade my Warriors or disband them?

I would start building better units and disbanding the old ones. You may not want to go to war anytime soon... but if you do, you want the best units you can have - besides, muskets look cooler than warriors ;)

What I mean by a drain is that you aren't doing anything with the very cities that are best able to do something, and you have obsolete units - many, many obsolete units.

I would build a barracks and immediately start building the best units out there

Alternately, build a wonder, or if there aren't any, start a prebuild - at least one of those can be building a palace which can be flipped to a wonder by the time you get to it.

I'm not convinced you have enough workers - why? because you have no workers improving the island with Rheims on it. Those cities should probably be making workers, rather than temples and granaries.

And I'm not sure why you think you have expanded enough - maybe I'm wrong, but you don't seem to have a lot of jungle, and jungle is a prime location for coal, which you are going to want for rails.

Also remember - techs in the industrial age are more expensive than in the middle ages - you are cranking through fairly expensive ones with no problem, of course, but they start jumping - you may want to get more and more towns out there to be specialist farms.

have you met everyone yet? I'm not sure from looking at the map.

Hi Hawk,

Sorry if some of this seems obvious, but here are some thoughts.

Your goal for this game is a diplomatic victory, so one usually builds the UN
and is elected Sec'y General. This requires that the game last all the way
into Modern Times, since the UN can't be built until you've discovered Fission.

To survive (and thrive!) into Modern Times, you will need a reasonably
strong military, both to deter aggression and to take the resources that
you need. You will also want to invest in your science infrastructure,
libraries and universities, in the cities near your palace and FP.
As AT pointed out, the techs are going to get more expensive, so you will
need more beakers per turn.
In the cities that are further from your palace or FP, build roads, irrigate,
and change the extra citizens to scientists.

How to actually win the election? Figure out who your rival is likely to be,
and suck up to the rest of the Civs. Some players will declare war
on the #2 civ just before completing the UN, and bribe the other civs
into military alliances against #2, thus ensuring their vote for you!
With your ample supply of incense, you should be able to buy the votes
by using that as an enticement.

OK, so that's your long-term goal. What about the short-term?
First, resources. You have your own sources of iron, horses and saltpeter.
But your marketplaces can't really kick up the happiness until you get
a *variety* of luxuries, not just incense. Take a look at Egypt.
Their eastern island (with Byblos, El-Amarna, Alexandria) is covered
with jungle and has two spices. And it is a short jaunt NW from your
Rheims island, given that you have the Great Lighthouse.
Consider invading this island, and taking those spices.

Japan and Zululand may not survive until Modern Times to vote for you.
Persia will probably take out Shaka, and either China or Korea will take out
Japan. Your rival is likely to be Persia or the Vikings, since each of them
has a healthy start. Persia has 16 cities, with 77 pop and controls 291
tiles, while the Vikings have 15 cities, with 50 pop and controls 236 tiles.
(Numbers thanks to CivAssist II!) Keep an eye on Persia, since they are
close to Egypt, and may also want to take the spices.

There are at least two more civs out there ... Babylon built the Oracle,
and the Aztecs built the Colossus. Depending on the sizes of their islands,
they might also contend for #2.

What to build? Ensure that all your coastal towns have harbors,
to increase food production and multiply your trade routes.
Upgrade your galleys to caravels, and start ferrying workers up to
Rheims island. The cities on that island aren't benefiting from your
luxury because they aren't connected to your trade network yet.
Use your productive cities to build knights, and start moving them by ship
to Rheims Island. On the former Indian island, you could squeeze in a city
or two along the river, if you like.

Use your cash to upgrade your swords to MedInf, and your Horsemen
to Knights. You will want a few barracks on the former Indian island,
and at least one on Rheims Island. The AI is terrible at naval invasions,
so when you start a war, you will face a pretty weak counter-invasion.
Consider making catapults in some partially-corrupt cities, which can be
later upgraded to cannons and artillery. Make lots of caravels, and
find all the little islands. Put cities on as many as you can, give them
harbors, and expand your trade net.

The AI will probably go nuts in the Industrial Ages, fighting each other.
Have some settlers ready to settle in the gaps that they leave, so that
you can grab luxury resources without much bloodshed.

You can't trade with most of the AI, because you (and they) can't
cross oceans safely. So, researching towards magnetism and navigation
will help your international trade. Make friends by selling them Astronomy
since you have already completed Copernicus.

But your marketplaces can't really kick up the happiness until you get a *variety* of luxuries, not just incense.

Yes, the marketplace gives you one happy face for the first and second luxury (in other words, doing nothing by themselves to keep the citizens happy) and two happy faces per luxury for the third and fourth luxuries. Three or four happy faces thereafter.

Quick note, even though it is a little too late ...
The coastal fortresses are not the best investment of shields.
They will fire on AI ships that remain within 1 square of the city.
Except that the AI knows this, and very rarely ends its turn with ships
within 1 square of a city.
The coastal fortresses may also improve the defense bonus of units
that are fortified in it, but I don't know if that is true, or what the
improvement is.

My recommendation is to avoid building any more coastal fortresses.

Warfighting: you're probably already doing this, but here goes ...
Keep your units together in a stack; the AI loves to find a lone cav
or knight and beat up on it.
Bombard first, use veteran units next, and use an elite unit to attack
something that is red-lined. If the AI city is bigger than size 6,
you may want to just park your stack and bombard it for 2 turns
before sending in the troops.

I'll d/l the save when I get home, and will try to have more specific suggestions later in the weekend. Good movement of troops, so far.

one thing you can do is find a civ who seems fairly strong and give them lots of extra luxes, so they can be a research partner. Probably a commercial civ, if you have left any ;)

they might (or might not) be able to get you replaceable parts, etc. Since you are obviously doing just fine, research wise, the only way to get a faster finish (if you want one) is to get the AI to help you out.

Problem is that they will all research nationalism, fascism and communism before anything helpful, of course.
