Need help with warfare

I am pretty good at peacefully growing my empire, but have trouble waging war and defending my empire. I would greatly appreciate any advice in simple terms on waging war and defending my empire.

This way of thinking here is one of your key issues. Don't play defensive, play offensive.

Anyway, your issue could be many-fold and I doubt you are as good as you think you are peacefully growing your empire. No idea what difficulty you play or your actually experience, but a more holistic approach to learning this game would serve you better than try to learn how to "defend you empire". So many factors play into successful warfare and surprisingly quite little has to do with your army.

Anyway, your inquiry is too general to give effective advice. Give use the specifics on how you play the game or post a save so we can get an idea of how you play, but best of all post a shadow game with normal settings and really learn how to play the game.

If you want to see someone defend very well while expanding, watch Sulla's Always War videos:

He didn't finish the game (got up to Nationalism if I recall), but it's a lesson in the art of defending against all 6 other civs throwing units at him.

I much prefer to attack rather than defend... -)

ha...honestly, I have never given advice in my over 10 years with the game about how to defend your empire.

Although offense is by far more preferable than defence, it is still worth learning how to defend oneself. BornInCantaloup gave me great advice on how to deal with Shaka when he was after my head with 20+ units stack and I had only horses.

I think always wars are winnable on immortal. Can be fun. I prefer the attack option. Waiting for AI to attack can be unpredictable.
