Need installshield update?

So I am installing the game. Disc 1 goes fine. When it asks for disc 2 I put it in and press the OK button just like on the previous disc and it just sits there a while. Initially my drive reads the dics but stops. Then the background on my desktop turns completely white and the computer locks up. It stays this way until I eject the disc. Then it tells me it could not find the correct filepath and I need to give it a different filepath to look for. Or that I need to insert the correct disc. Which of course I have. I have opened the disc files and input the address ex. D:\data3.cab but that didn't work.

Originally it installed disc 2 and did this to me on disc 3. I deleted the folder from the program files (I would have uninstalled it but it wasn't listed in the add/remove programs utility)and went to reinstall the game and now it won't install disc 2.

Any ideas on where to find a fix for this? I tried the search but after an hour and a half I haven't found anything remotely like this problem.

TIA

I am having basically the same problem with disc 2 of Beyond the Sword. When prompted I put in the disc and click on OK. Momentarily the whole background turns white and nothing more happens. The prompt to put in the second disc is still at the front and the progress screen for the install behind it. If I bring up the task amanger it tells me both the prompt to put in the second disc and the installer are not responding. The disc just spins and spins...

I checked and data3.cab is the only thing on that disc. I copied it off to my harddrive but the installer won't read it from there.

I know that in the past some of these problems have been caused by the safedisk protection and that a firmware update for the CD drive has cured the problem. See if there's a firmware update for your CD drive and if the problem still occurs.

Thanks for the tip, Sam. I got the latest firmware for my (Sony) DVD drive, installed it, and tried again. Same failure. I swapped in a different brand (LG) of DVD drive, updated it, and also got the same failure.

I decided to try starting everything over from scratch so I uninstalled the base Civ4 and Civ4 Warlords and re-installed Civ4. Argh! Now the same thing happens on the second CD of the base Civ4! This installed fine originally.

Any other ideas?

P.S. I have installed lots of other programs in the past few months without any trouble including several recent games.

O.K. I made some progress. Simple and it worked. When I put the disc in I wait for the drive to spin up to speed and read the disc. I don't do anything to advance the installation. Once the window opens showing the disc contents I close it. After all of this has transpired and the drive has settled back down to idle, I click O.K. to proceed with the installation. It's worked perfectly twice that way. Don't ask me why??? Your results may vary.

You may want to know "why twice"? That's a subject for another entirely different thread. Lets just say D3DX9_32.DLL is missing.
Also ERROR (-5004: 0x80041f42) occurred while running setup.
Also there are the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library runtime Errors.

I use alot of software. Most more complicated than this. None of them have these multiple unstable crash ready symptoms. And here we are 2 years after the release it's still not fixed. Please don't tell me he's working on a new one. He hasn't finished this one yet.

I just tried that and it didn't work.

OK, I just had an idea. I have that 2nd DVD drive just sitting here. I am going to hook it up too and use it for the second disk and see what happens....

---some time later---

...and YAY that worked to install the base Civ4 but BOO not Beyond the Sword. Crud. When installing BtS and I change the prompt's drive letter to the second drive it just makes a noise and changes the letter back. Same thing if I use Browse to switch to the second drive.

I tried installing with the CDs in all possible combinations and it just doesn't work.

Is there some way to manually extract the files from the second CD?

Do you have authoring software like Nero or software like Alcohol 120% or Daemon tools present? These have reportedly caused issues with the copy protection in the past.

Actually this is a new issue caused by the release of Beyond the Sword - the 1.74 and 2.13 patches for Vanilla and Warlords now need a newer release of DirectX 9c from Microsoft (get it from here) than the original release of 2 years ago.

I just tried that and it didn't work.

There is no really good way of doing this, some people have reported copying everything onto the harddrive and installing from there might solve the installer problems - you still need the cd in the drive and it needs to recognize it for you to use it legally though. If that is a Safedisk problem you might want to look through this for some fixes - but usually those apply for after the game has installed.

Edit: and: :):):) Welcome to Civfanatics to both of you :):):)

Yeah, I just went through the 1.74 patch hell and am proud to say it's working with the 1.74 patch. Gotta love google. And if you didn't know already there was a new directx runtime package released on 10/25/07. It mentioned updates for gaming. That's the one I installed prior to reinstalling the 1.74 patch. Never got the error 1706 to go away but it's working so ??

Also, ever since I got the discs to read that first time I haven't had the problem again. I've installed it 4 times now. Hopefully that'll be all.

I copied both BtS CDs to my harddrive and installed from there and it worked! Yeah! Now, time to not get sleep for a week... :-)
