So I was cleaning out my room the other day and found my original Civilization CD. Tried playing it (I last played it ten years ago) and remembered how much fun it was. I read through the Civilopedia and such but was still getting my butt kicked. I had about 3-4 cities but was losing money out the ying-yang.

1. The more cities the more income?

2. When to irrigate, mine, build roads? And when you click on a city sometimes there will be red boxes on certain terrains... what does that mean?

3. My advisor told me to change more people into taxmen, how the heck do you do that?

Thanks.

1. Yes, also make sure to build roads to increase trade. The more trade you have; the more income.

2. After you build 3 to 7 cities, build more settlers to irrigate mine and road. The red boxes mean that a neighboring city has its resources set on that square.

3. I don't recommend using taxmen, but you can do that by removing one of the resource squares from the city map, after that you will get an Elvis on one of your citezens, click on the Elvis and he will turn to a taxman. Try switching your government to republic, and build marketplaces and banks. Also, try changing your tax rate.
Press F5 to see where your losing money and where your gaining money. Try to minimise the loss by selling un-needed city improvements.

Thanks!

What would you classify as unneeded city improvements?

Most of my cities are going into famine, I have granaries, aqueducts etc, and have irrigated around them. Once you irrigate an area, do you need to re-irrigate it?

You only need to re-irrigate an area if the computer controlled civilizations send troops to your cities and pillage the improvements. If this hasn't happened, I don't know is happening to you. Are you playing at Chieftan level? Until you get the hang of it, make sure you are playing Chieftan. It is a hundred times easier.

Unneeded city improvements:
* barracks or city walls for peaceful civilizations/times
* temple, colesseum, AND cathedral in a city that is already very happy or has few citizens
* granary in a city that cannot grow under any circumstances (simply not enough food and no more land to irrigate)
* courthouse in a city with no corruption (black trade arrows)
* libraries and universities when you have the tax rate near 100%
* marketplaces and banks when you have the tax rate near 0%

In civ I be sure and get those caravans out. send them as far away as you can.

But don't build caravans if you have a building or something which you need. Caravans are long-term investments that take a while to make so you don't want to clog up a city that could use something else.
