Nerds in Space

I'm waiting to see a debate on which Star Fleet captain was better - Kirk or Picard
There is no reason to debate...
It goes Kirk > every other captain, both major and minor, even tose only present in the episode where they screw up and die, of every species > Pricard

Holy crap that was funny, if not wildly inaccurate. Allow me to demonstrate. There were precisely two things we liked about Kirk:

  1. He was a womanizing poon-hound
  2. The Wrath of Kahn was awesome

That's it.

For the first, the creators of the Next Generation made a conscious decision that the Captain of the Federation's Flagship should have more decorum (it was supposed to portray a more mature Federation) and they gave the job of boldly tapping what no man had tapped before to Ryker. However, Picard had plenty of opportunity and--here's where his awesomeness far surpasses James Tyberius'--he turned it down. Picard could have had a tap of hot and cold running hunnies any time he wanted it, but he was better than that.

Next, yes, KKKKKKKKKKKAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHNNNNNNN!!!!!!!! was great. That frickin earwig thing still freaks me out. But it's worth noting that, were it not for Spock's crowning moment of awesome in that movie, it probably would have been mediocre at best. The whole sacrifice->hand off your conscious to Bones->live long and prosper as radiation burns you from the inside out->Scotty playing Amazing Graze on the bagpipes thing really broadened an emotional palate that heretofore had only really held fear and spite. That wasn't Kirk's doing and he olny flubbed his one major dramatic line.

Contrast the final episode of the Next Gen when Picard drifts between three different timelines from his own life, saves humanity from an omnipotent toddler, gets a crew who'd just met him to die for him, and that sh*t with the future Enterprise flying in on the Z axis to rip a whole in everything Klingon--well no contest.

Plus, Picard is French with an English accent. Only someone made of awesome could pull that off.

1. He was a womanizing poon-hound
2. The Wrath of Kahn was awesome

That is all the argument needed. Plus he was never afraid to blow stuff up, unlike the wimpy Pric. Khan and Voyage Home > everything else Trek related.

I'm not sure, were you trying to say the TNG finale was good or crap?
The latter being a compliment for it.

And the Kirk - Spock - McKoy team is one of the greatest in TV history.

I liked "All Good Things" very much.

I'm staying on the fringes of this debate, in part because I've seen very, very little of the original series, but from what I've seen of Kirk, I prefer Picard because he has more, well, as Rex said, "decorum."

Of course, if I tried to say "it doesn't matter who is best: Each person has their own personal preference," I would probably be lynched, right?

People who say that are just stupid. I only lynch those who prefer Pricard.

Oh, of course. I'm sure glad that you're so fair-minded.

Anyway, who remembers that Great Merchant we have? We have one vote on a Bulb for Currency. Any other opinions?

OK, so that's . . .

1 vote for Currency
1 vote for Trade Mission
1 vote for Settling.

. . . .

Maybe I'll just roll a d6 to decide! :crazyeye:

Settle the GM in one of our colonies; maybe Antium.

Re Kirk vs Picard. Picard wiz a more multidimensional character than Kirk and therefore 'better'. However the original cast was about the interaction between Kirk, Spock, Scott and McKoy which was more interesting than the Next Cast crew.

Okay, so let's see. Our Great Merchant is . . .

:goodjob:

So, we've had many choices. What does the magical d6 say? Here are our options:

1-Settle
2-Bulb
3-Trade Mission
4-Golden Age
5-Delete
6-Stop rolling dice, you silly, silly person

And the answer is . . . *drum roll*

. . . ffffff-six!

Well, if you say so, O dice, my master! :)

Looking at our options, Bulbing would save us at least 12 turns, and all those extra trade routes will earn at least 13 gpt. At our current rate of science, that's about 9 beakers and 4 gold per turn. And it essentially saves us, or gives us, 156 over the course of those 12 turns we'd otherwise spend researching Currency.

Settling produces 6 gpt (and 1 food), so it would take about 26 turns to equal those extra trade routes. Hmm, and then it would start paying for itself, long-term. Buuuuut, I'm going to go with the bigger pay-off now, and bulb Currency! Let's see if my calculations were right.

Now: 70% science = 66 beakers, break-even. (Or total commerce of 79: 26 domestic trade, 15 foreign).

Post-now: 75 beakers, +4 gpt. (Or 91 commerce, with 38 domestic and 15 foreign trade).

Increasing spending will run us a deficit, so I leave it alone for now.

Though now I realize that I missed my chance to settle "Lando" somewhere and rename it "Cloud City."

After Construction, I decide for Code of Laws (even though the religion has been founded) so we can get some Courthouses in action. Rome is going to work on a Forum. I will probably whip it hard. My goal for this set is to get in some infrastructure and improve our financial situation.

OK, so I totally forgot that we didn't have Horseback Riding. Ha ha. We're a couple of turns into Metal Casting (which I picked for forges and Triremes). The Colossus wouldn't be that bad, either. Anyway, Mon Calamari is on starvation wages because I flubbed a whip and I don't want to let it grow. Ridikulus is making a Work Boat for Absurd, and Absurd (and Antium) are on Courthouses along with Mon Calamari. Gotta save that cash!

Oh, and boating a Worker to Mon Cal to chop a mine out of that forest hill southwest of the city. And Rome is recovering from a debilitating 4-pop whip to get the Forum built. Maybe a bit harsh, but the city grows faster than it could have built the darn thing.

Considering all the whipping I had done, I was trying to find a picture to make a lame joke, like: "Don't whip me, bro!" But I found . . . this. I think this is enough:

I have the save - I mean, the "historical documents." I shall begin transmission tomorrow evening.

I see fear - that is expected. Ah, they bring a new commander! Here are my demands, and if I do not hear what I like, then there will be BLOOD and PAIN as you cannot imagine!
First, I require a Forum to be built in Mon Calamari.
Second, Ridikulus must focus efforts on a courthouse.
Third, I require additional technologies.

Fourth, I require Rome to build a workboat.

Okey dokey, okey dokey, Let's get Metal Casting out of the way

... Work on compass. Trade code of laws to Saladin for monarchy.

How did I come to this? I played Richard III... There were Five curtain calls! I was an ACTOR once, damn it. Now look at me ... LOOK AT ME! I cannot go out there, and I won’t say that stupid line one more time. I can’t ... and I won’t.

Well, Alex, at least you had a PART. Okay? You had a character people loved! I mean, my interview with Ozbenno was six paragraphs about my BOOBS and how they fit into my suit. No one even bothered to ask me what I DO on the show.

Spoiler :
There are 5 turns left on compass. The workers have been building cottages on forested tiles but they should be timed now so the chop goes into a good build of choice. Rome is growing like a weed, we may want to whip a forge there and attempt the Colossus.

 She does something on the show

If we're growing Rome like a weed for whipping, how about we boat the crab and clam ;)

Galaxy Quest: An excellent choice.

Sounds like things went relatively smoothly. Compass is a good tech to go for on this map, but we still probably want Horseback Riding (for those AT-APs). And it looks like that Worker never made it to Mon Calamari? Maybe I should put up more signs in the actual game.

But it looks like Monarchy really helped out. The happy cap in Rome is finally respectable.

Sorry about that, Whosit. I should've read your post more carefully, I totally missed what you were doing with the worker so I just aimlessly went off in some oddball direction. :smoke:
